All I can say is that if Steve is hurting, and if it was hard for Steve, it is a course that is beyond killer, cuz he's one tough dude on the hills. Way to go, pal. Would have loved to have seen you finish, and knowing what you and Ryan were doing was really inspiring. I loved the race and now that it's over, I'm super pleased with my preparation. I feel great and my quads never hurt once during the run, even with the downhills. This fall I hiked -- hard, athletic hiking -- on Thursdays, and did long runs on tired legs on Fridays, and while it was tough some days, it all came together and my body never felt "spent" on the run. My brain was done around 18.5 miles, but that's not too far to self-talk the rest of the way. Huge thanks to Steve for nudging me out of my comfort zone and onto the mountain for a race that was longer than I ever thought I'd run on those hills. I've always said NEVER to an ultra, but maybe, just maybe, some day. But if someday arrives, I don't think it'll be on the course that Steve and Ryan tackled today. I'm curious how long the later peeps were out there... |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Who's RP? Great job Birdy, Kyla, Jayne!! If I missed anyone, slap me up. Really sorry to hear about the crash Dino! It's funny, Paul calls my bike a "clown bike", especially when a mechanic rides it to test it out after a tune up! I am sure that the Badger game and really awful playing by the Packers didn't help the healing process. Good grief. I'm thinking of our three IM Florida racers. I really hope that this storm doesn't screw with the race or travel plans.

I still lurk, if only to keep an eye on Dineen. The 50k was great... the weather was better than we'd expected. The quads and calves are a little sore this morning, but I felt my nutrition was spot on, so there's not a whole lot I'd change about the experience. The real superstar is Birdy as he battled through a serious head cold to finish strong. Kyla was, well, Kyla: rock steady and super strong. |

You can see where my priorities were.... RP can probably chime in on this better, but I feel like your "biking legs" will come back pretty quickly. The 50K and getting destroyed on hills was my priority for the past few months.
Here is a general idea. You can entry your race date, and your distance. It'll spit out a program. http://www.scrunners.org/ultrasch.php

Kyla you rock!! Birdy and Ryan you are both great at the trails! I also wonder about the compressions socks, how do they help you? I like them for recovery. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi David I use calf sleeves and have Sugois and CEPS. I wear them for every run and ride and swear they keep my calves less tight than without them. I don't like sleeves. They seem to cut into my achilles because the elastic lands right there. |

We both have on calf sleeves and they are 2XU. I also have the socks as well as tights. I like the calf sleeves on the trail because it allows me to wear my Smartwool socks and still have the compression on the calf. If doing long road runs I will wear the normal sock. Now the million dollar question- Do they work? Yes. To me it is all about being proactive, and preventing anything from going wrong. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ryanp100 - 2012-10-29 7:52 PM ![]() ![]() ![]() These pics make me want to walk out of my full-day workshop and go for a nice long trial run. I checked out that website and put in my race date. I was pleased to see that my training plan didn't start until December. lol So far I've only used compression for recovery and I think they are worth their weight in gold. I'm planning on using compression for all of my long runs and on race day. I am prone to losing toe nails and an interesting article I read recently said swelling of the feet can contribute to black toe nails and losing them. I'm hoping the compression socks can keep the swelling down on the super long runs. I think I might also buy another pair of shoes a 1/2 size larger and have them on standby for my third lap. Anyway, that's all a long way away for me. Let's talk about FLORIDA!!! Linda, John, Tiana, what's happening out there? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Amazing job out there Ryan, Birdy, and Kyla. Enjoy a well deserved reward. Love the pics! Nice finish, Jayne! Your April race will be here before you know it! I had a better race than I expected. New 5k PR at 26:28 with a 3rd in AG finish. Helped that it was a small field and super flat course but I'll take it. Proud Mama moment. My 6yo son did the 1 mi fun run and did awesome. There was no timing chips/bibs et. but they did have a clock running and he crossed in 7:15. I'm pretty sure it was short but I certainly couldn't keep up with him. Now just dealing with the aftermath of Sandy. We've been without power for 18+ hours and with the number of downed trees/roads closed I saw this morning, it could be a while. I wouldn't mind too much if the kids weren't going stir crazy. I'll need a Calgon moments when I get my hot water back! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Stay safe East coasters! Epic flooding scenes in the news, hope you guys stay out of harm's way. We are readying ourselves for another World Series victory parade. Orange and Black will be out in full force for Halloween. 60 lbs of candy here at my office for the school's and kids in the neighborhood. Compression socks. I haven't ever raced in them, I wore them for a few long runs when getting ready for Boston in '11 and my legs felt so hot, I wanted to rip them off. For those of you that use them, do you have that problem? Maybe the ones I have (zoot) are thicker? I tend to always run in shorts, even with temps in the high 20's low 30's, my legs get itchy and hot in capris or tights, so maybe it's a "kim thing"? dunno. I may re-visit since it does seem like calf cramping has been kind of my end of race nemesis for marathons. Happy Traveling to our IM's. Will be following your every stroke and step this weekend! Keep it strong, peeps! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I just tried compression socks this fall. I think I love them!! I'd wear them post-hike and post-long run. I haven't tried running in them -- I'm in love with my running socks, like Steve, but I've not tried sleeves. I do think they helped with my recovery (that, and just running more miles seems to help with recovery). Never had a calf cramp, so can't speak to that. And yeah, Jayne? If I want to log lots of run miles, I pretty much bag the bike. It's too much of a juggling act for me and I like running 6-7x a week. I find the more I run, the better I recover. Swimming is awesome x-training for lots of run miles, IMO. It really stretches out the joints and feels sooooooo good on tired legs. That said, I've given up early-morning swims because I'm a slacker and that's how I'm rolling this year!! Ha!! I like running in capris because I can have chafing issues on longer runs. My legs aren't as skinny as yours are, Kim!! If I had your legs I think I'd wear shorts all day, every day, no matter the weather. And I'd stop and admire my hot, muscular, skinny legs in the mirror or a window every chance I got. Three guesses as to which part of my body I hate... and the first two don't count. Ha ha!! |
