Congrats on the time Lee.

My wife and I had to do a little triathlon rearranging. Our first sprint distance was scheduled to be North East, MD on August 17th. After looking at what it was going to cost Entry+ hotels+food for family and two teenagers to watch my kids while we raced it was going to be like taking a family vacation. We opted to change to another race which is only a couple of hours away starts at 10 am and gives 6 more weeks to train.

We still plan on doing the Super Sprint for a warm up event which is the day after my two boys first kids Tri. This is also a local race 1 hour away. With my wife off for the summer it just wasn't smart to shell out all of the money.

Last week my wife and I were traveling in NYC with my youth group for a mission trip. We were doing so much walking each day my feet and legs were killing me and I got quite a few blisters so I did not get any training in at all. The good news is after my week off I ran to night and felt really good. I didn't pace very well and definitely could could have ran faster. I ran 3.4 miles at 11.66 min mile. I want to down to 10 min miles for the 3.4 miles before my race. My wife who is a rabbit usually is in front of me and I try to catch her which keeps my pace much better.

Also because of the additional training time I switched from the 2X per sport per week beginner training plan to the 3X per week which will give me more volume per week. My training is going well so I want to increase my workouts in an effort to stimulate some more weight loss. I have been hovering at my current weight for about 3 weeks.

Good call Tiny.

With the way the Economy is going, and the price of race fees, its good to do one close to home.

For me, I enjoy the training and the race is just a reason to keep on training. I have lost another 18 pounds since this group started, so all is good.

1st Question:  My right leg is getting real ore on inside of leg, between knee and groin after running.  After sitting laying or just standing I have to be careful when taking first step.  Did not run for 2 days, (rest and bike day) but ran yesterday and it flared back up.  Any advice?

2nd Question: What i the proper way to set wew Look cleats on new shoes.

Thanks Dwayne

Check your shoes, check your running surface. Other than that, Rest/Ice/Compression/Elevation.

Go with the neutral position: You want to set the cleats to where the ball of your foot is directly over the pedal spindle, and the feet aligned parallel to the bike frame.

the chi running book describes the origins of various running pain. According to the book if you can trace the pain to improper stance/footstrike etc.
I had shin splints in my left medial calf - I wasn't running with "loose calves", when I corrected this it went away.
I don't have my book with me, otherwise I'd look it up for you

Since it has been 100 degrees or more here lately I have been running around the park that is shaded.  There is one trail that is a little higher on one side than the other, and I have been running the same direction every day.  A light went on after my first post, and since leg is feeling a lot better today I will try running the opposite direction and if this doesn't work I will stay off trail. It is also a soft trail sand (trail is only about .10 mi.

Does this make sense?

Thanks for the help

Makes a lot of sense Dwayne.

Uneven footing can cause problems. Even running on the street near the curb can cause problems since the road tilts to drain off rain water. So one foot/ leg is always higher than the other.

That could definitely do it. I'd be careful on a trail that short too - the constant turning can irritate other body parts. ITB comes to mind.

The uneven part of trail is only.10 mile the route I take is .60 mile.  Tried to run last night but same muscle,(Inside of leg, from knee to hip) was still sore, so I just walked for 30 min. without any pain.

I thought ITB was on outside of leg.  Still haven't found out which muscle or nerve this is.

I am going to walk again on Friday and hope It will be fine for Sunday's brick.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Ok, that's better. I thought you were saying the loop was only .1 mile!

ITB is on the outside of the leg. It can be brought on by running on uneven surfaces or doing a lot of track work where you're constantly turning one direction over & over. Easy solution in both cases is to alternate the direction you're running.

Yours sounds like a hip adductor strain, which would make sense with the embankment.

probably

usual disclaimers about not being a doctor and not knowing for sure what you are actually experiencing............. here's how I approach a strain.

recent Achilles strain:

- ice several times a day.
- start anti-inflammatories.. stomach is sensitive to ibuprofen, so I have some prescription ketaprofen cream.
- reduce session duration by half.
- NO stretching.

Usually things are better in about 5 days.

Well New Hampshire gets my award for the most wicked hill workout that I have done to date.

I rode in an neighborhood across from from my hotel. I was in my easiest gear that my bike has and I could only get to 50 rpm on my cadence. The hill was about .5 miles long. The neighborhood straddles a hill so I rode up the hill and down the other side and turned around at the bottom. On the way down I was riding about 33 miles an hour and was using my brakes the whole time to maintain control on the winding road. I could only muster enough strength to do the out and back twice, before my legs were cooked and I had to go back to the hotel. Total ride was 5.5 miles and I will be feeling it tomorrow.

I can only imagine doing the climbs that the Tour de France does. WOW

The thread isnt ugly yet, but slowtwitch forums are like a mass swim start, people will be bashing each other, just to show who has the most testoterone and or bank account.

Wow. That actually sounds pretty cool. I liked this quote at the end: Road-bike aficionados are much like trout: simultaneously enthralled and mortified by anything shiny and new that enters their environment.

LOL

So true. I don't post there, I just kinda lurk around the edges. Similar to my approach to a mass start.

Well I just shelled out $350 for entry fee's so I guess it is official.

August 10th Sunday Super Sprint (Teresa and I)

August 17th Sprint Distance (Teresa and I)

I am trying to decide if I am going to get a wetsuit or not.

Money is kind of on the tight side but I can justify the expenditure. My wife is concerned about the swim the most so I think this would help if the added restriction doesn't end up hurting her too much. Argh! I can not decide.

Tiny, how warm will the water be, and how much weight are you and your wife planning on losing?

No sense getting a wet suit now, if you will be 20 pounds lighter at Christmas, and the wet suit wont fit anymore.

You can rent wetsuits for a race for about 40 dollars.

You can buy cheapo ones from used sporting goods, but they are usually surf suits. But if you just want to stay warm for a week end and you get sleeveless you should be ok.

Wet suits feel really tight on land. Once wet, they stretch a little bit, but still feel tight. Some feel really tight around the neck.

That doesnt freak me out, but really freaks out my friend. He feels like he is choking.

This time of year, you probably dont need a wet suit for warmth. Its nice to have for bouyancy, but for sprints and super sprints, you could get by without it.

Practice open water swimming, so you get used to it mentally. Its a lot different than pool swimming.

Good Luck,

Cash

WOOOHOOOO!!!!

I completed my first Tri yesterday.  It was the Willow Creek Sprint Tri, 300 yard swim, 15 mile bike and a 3 mile run.   I did it in 1:33:55.  I feel great this morning.

Although I didn't post much on this thread, Ialways read it and took lots of things from it, thanks all.

My wife is worried about the swim and she is probably about 10 to 15 pounds from her lowest weight and these are going to be slow pounds.

This is my problem with renting.

1. I only get it for one week so not much time to swim and get used to it.
2. With the wetsuits on sale at the end of the season I can get some of the wetsuits for about $150 to $170 which the rental is about 1/3 of that price.

Now I realize that I am probably trying to justify buying a wetsuit.

I know it is not a necessity but I am hoping this will allow my wife to not worry as much about the swim knowing that she can roll over and float with little effort.
