I am excited for the race this year. Not racing this year, hell I have struggled getting focused now for almost a year since IMCDA last year. I am volunteering this year (catching from 6 to 9) and will be snagging my spot for 2010.

See y'all race week!

Have a great taper!

I'm catching from 2-6 but may stick around for a short while longer to catch McFuzz as he comes through.

I'll be volunteering at the Medical tent from 4-8pm.  Hope I don't see any of you there!  Otherwise I'll just be hanging out the rest of the day watching you all race.  Good luck to all of you and enjoy your taper!

I've done the training, now I need to score a little race day karma.  My wife and I are putting together a race-eve spaghetti dinner.  Anyone interested can find the details in my blog.

So I was browsing through the athletes guide and came across the first rule of the run course:

1. No form of locomotion other than running, walking or crawling is allowed.

I'm not sure what concerns me more, the fact that if I'm crawling they will actually allow me to continue or that it happens enough to warrant a rule about it.

I also saw that you have to attach reflectives to your running gear. Is this the normal thing to do with US races?
Is it compulsory or purely advisory if you are likely to finish in the dark!

They only start handing them out later in the race for those that will be out after dark.

quick update on the contact list.  I've attached a sample that can be opened in Excel 97-2003.  I guess some people aren't using Office 2007 yet   Shoot me a PM if you want me to add your info.  See everybody 2 weeks from today.

question for those of you using hammer/other nutrition products-
how do you pack all the powder?  I can't bring the containers, much too big so I was going to put it all in ziplocs on my carryon so they don't leak (and so I know I have them!)  will security hassle you about large amounts of powder like that?  any experiences in traveling with this stuff??

Hey... Of my many duties at the airport I work at, I am also the Airport Security Coordinator... TSA doesn't have restrictions against bags of powder, but with that said, it could look like an illegal substance and they could question you about it, but they shouldn't prohibit it.  A list of prohibited items can be found at:

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm#11

Keep in mind, I work for an airport, not TSA (a disclaimer! )

I would put the label from the container in the bag.  It might help allieviate questions.  There's a big chance they won't even question you.  Also, just let them know before you go through security that you have some powdered drink mix in a bag.  They like it when there are no surprises.  Fianlly, make sure you know that list on TSA's website and don't let them trample your rights...

Also, if you are going through a smaller airport, it tends to be easier than a large one.

If you are using Tri Bike Transport you can send up to one 25lb bag with them.  I usually send it with them to avoid the airport hassle.  I also send CO2 catridges with Tri Bike Transport as you can't bring those on the plane either.

Does tri bike transport charge extra for the bag? The other option is buy the hammer stuff at the race expo area, there was a seller at IMLP, I assume there will be someone there. Anyone able to confirm this?

I did do tri bike transport with an extra bag, my only concern with stuffing it all in there is that the truck will probably get pretty hot and I don't want the stuff to rot. that would make for a very sickening ironman.  thought about buying it there and I really do think someone will be there but it would be a huge problem if for some reason they weren't or they ran out of perpetuem.  man, I didn't think this would be such a dilemma.  I'm still leaning towards the bags with labels in my carryon like dccossey suggested... hmmm....  I have to ship with TBT on tuesday so I need to get my bag packed asap!!

I'm using tribiketransport too and I think I remember reading something on their website that they recommend you do NOT put energy drink powders, food, etc. in the extra gear bag.   I'm putting pre-measured Infinit in individual ziploc sandwich bags (labeled as energy drink powder), then putting all of them in an empty whey protein plastic canister and putting it in my checked baggage.

(edit, from website:  )

Optional Gear Bag: For an additional $35.00 fee, we can also take a medium-sized gear bag for you. The gear bag is a great way to ship pedals, helmet, bike shoes, water bottles, wetsuit, CO2 cartridges (not permissible in airline baggage). Maxium allowable weight of gear bag is 25 lbs. We cannot take bags or back packs with wheels. We don't recommend including nutritional items such as energy bars, gels and powders. No liquids please. Note: Some event locations restrict us from taking gear bags. Please see specific event registrations for restrictions.

Whoops my bad, don't listen to me .  I'm going the checked baggage route and shipping, wetsuit, CO2, tubes, etc... with Tri Bike.

I use Infinit and will just put it in the empty water bottles that I am bringing.

Even if there's not a Perpetuem booth at the expo, the LBS has it so you shouldn't have a problem.

If anyone has any questions about the city, i.e restaurants, other activities for families, etc, let me know.  Also, if anyone's in need of last minute lodging I can help with that as well.  I live less that 10 minutes from downtown CDA and hopefully can answer any questions for you.  Safe travels to everyone.

Another thought I just had... You could Fed Ex it to yourself.  Just overnight it to where you will be staying.  Might be expensive, but you are sure to have no problems.

Are any of you bringing teenage children with you.
I am travelling with my 17 yr old daughter and although she has signed up as a volunteer, it would be nice if she could meet up with others of similar age to keep her company on race day and welcome dinner
