...my main goal is to remain injury free, and at my weight I'm prone to them. If this is the wrong way of going about building my distance what would be the right way?

If you want to be injury free - you need to avoid impact sports - I would say do the biking and swimming until you've lost a bit then you can start pounding the joints.

(But I seem to be a rare breed - I love the swimming!)

Am I the only one that's totally inspired by George's efforts? - go big guy - you're doing a great job! Cool

If it wasn't for this group I would have quit long ago. Thanks everybody.

I agree...but I also think running is the quickest way to dropa few pounds.

I cant believe I allowed you swim lovers into this group!!

I don't think they announced themselves as swimmers at the beginning so I don't think it's all your fault

I may be going out of town, so training is in flux at this point. And considering other stuff going on right now, I would probably hurt myself training with as ticked off as I am. Oh well, we all have drama at some point or another.

Hey maesmama, I looked at your goals and have a question. Why do you want to hit your trainer three times a week? What did he ever do to you?

Bike trainer actually, but if I had a trainer, I would probably want to hit him at least 3 times a day let alone 3 times a week.

Ok someone help me out here.

Went for my one mile run tonight, stretched my calfs and the sides of my calfs really well. Didn't want that thing on the side coming back. Walked a bit, didn't feel anything during the walk or stretch. Started my run and a few seconds into it I had a stabbing pain in my right calf. This was about two inches above my anckle, from the back straight into my leg. After two minutes I had to stop and re-stretch that calf. Took back off and the pain was there for another 30 seconds or so. Then went away and did not return. I hit that area with the massage stick to try and loosen it up. Any ideas?

Buddaha1964 - 2009-01-08 8:48 PM Does this plan sound ok? This week I ran/walked a mile on Monday; ran a mile on Wednesday, first day of hundred pushups; Friday I'm planning on running another mile and again on Saturday. Off day/pushups day three on Sunday. Keep those same days scheduled but on either Wednesday or Friday run 1.5 miles. Then add .5 miles to another day the following week and keep this up until I have four days of 1.5 miles. I would then add distance to another day and start the whole thing over again gradually building up my distances. Keep in mind my main goal is to remain injury free, and at my weight I'm prone to them. If this is the wrong way of going about building my distance what would be the right way?

SO you are running 4 days a week and  the other 2 are strength training?

Yeah I think that sounds pretty good.... you may find eventually you will be able to increase the run bu more then .5 miles.  which is a GOOD thing!  Jump on the bike if you get bored of runnning or want a little more.

Um yeeaaa will go with that the other two are strength training Any serious biking is going to have to wait until the roads clear, I really can't stand the trainer. I'm hopeing that by the time spring hits I'l be running 4 days 3-5 miles at a time. Then I'll introduce biking to the non run days and at least one of the run days. This'll get me through most of the summer, and hopefully weight, then late in the year I'll get into swimming again. Start training for IMWI '10 and just be an all around studly triathlete

You know to sign up for 2010 you have to be at 2009...... Just sayin'!!!

The filter at work stopped this reply earlier. I thought the sign up at the race was for finishers only, everyone else has to wait until the next morning. Correct me if I'm wrong. The 12th was the day I was going to have a big party so if I can sign up on the 13th I may have the party the weekend before. Of course all my tri friends would be invited to that as well.

Well participants can sign up on Sat the 12th...everyone else waits in like the morning after - the 14th.  I do believe it made it to online registration though- although  not for long.  Best bet is to be in line early Monday morning.  So Id say go and watch the race- its awesome.  I believe volunteers have early dibs at signup on Saturday too, if you want to that route.

Decided that my leg was from over stretching, based on a couple of web sites I hit. Was bothering me a bit this morning bit being careful not to stretch it too much it felt fine after shoveling the driveway. After a bit of a break I'm going to do day one of the 200 situp program then go run my mile. Got on the scale this morning and was some what disheartened to see I haven't lost anything so far this week. Official weigh in is on Monday so we'll see then what it is.

I did a LT Test today for my run on the treadmill, here are my results

Run
2009-01-10

HR/Pace label Range data label Cumulative Time in zone
1 - Recovery 114 - 146
2 - Extensive Endurance 147 - 156
3 - Intensive Endurance 157 - 164
4 - Sub-Threshold 165 - 171
5a - SuperThreshold 172 - 175
5b - Anaerobic Endurance 177 - 181
5c - Power 182 - 190

Comments about this HR Zone:
LT tes on Treadmill 10 min warm up 25 min TT with last 20 min recorded for avg HR.

My avg HR was 14 beats higher than my last test so I am super stoked. (that is good right?)

It was very energizing! I feel great, may "hit" the trainer today when the girls go down for nap but I have lots of stuff to do for our new website! (for the bike park) so excited about that!
So if not today, than tommorrow for sure.

Tammy, I see you calculating pace times for others, can you do that with my LT tes or would you need to know the exact distance? The distance that I recorded was for the whole test including warm up and cool down.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

My bit of advice: If you watch snowboard videos while on the TM, hold on during crash scenes !

Hey Everyone!

I am hoping this magically works. I have been able to read the forum, but not reply. We are on our last day in Costa Rica. I am excited to get home and  back to the training. I have been missing it a lot, along with my doggies and kitties.

My hip is feeling much better. I plan on running on Tuesday. I hope I am not very sore. I have only been off for 10 days. I don't want to have to break myself in again. I am going to take is slow my first week back then hit the training hard!

Can't wait! Smile

Finshed up my first "real" week. Ran, and ran IS a subjective term, a total of 3.75 miles and walked .25 miles. As well as the first two days of the pushup routine, day three is tomorrow, and the first day of the situp routine. Cut nearly 30 seconds off my mile time also.

Next weeks goals:
Run 4 miles over four days: thats no walking
Continue the pushups and situps.

I am on call for work next week and the weather is supposed to worsen but my goal is to finish this anyways.

Corinna-

Nice job with the test

I go those paces form a recent 5K or 10K.... have you done one recently we can use?

The whole HR thing is kind of confusing sometimes.... yes you want to be able to work at a high LT but you really want to be able to run faster at a lower HR.  As  you train your resting HR will go down.... as well as your running HR.  For example right now you may run 4 miles with an ave HR of 161 (just an example #) in 6 months from now with proper training you should eb able to run 4 miles with alower HR maybe 158 AT THE SAME PACE.  You will also probaly be able to run more then 4 miles with the 161 HR.

Know what I am trying to say???

The leg just has a bit of a nagging pain when I walk, much better than yesterday. I really beleive it was an over stretching thing and will go away in a couple of days with a little bit of care.

I used to log everything I ate and may need to go back to that. I do find it's easier to use a written log for that then the one on this site. That's only because I allways would have my notebook with me and I could fill it out as I went. I tried to use the one here recently and it's just too inconvenient for me. Especially since my work started filtering the web sites out, I can only get to this site between noon and one everyday.

Is there a web site, that you know of, where I could get basic nutrition requirements from? Like how much protien, fat, carbs, etc. is needed everyday for working out, as well as weight loss and not working out? Nutrition information is my one weak spot in my plans. The few I have found are more directed towards the fit individual that is training as opposed to someone just starting ouy.
