Uxbridge | Subject: RE: Running Pumpkins - Halloween Run Challenge Baowolf - 2009-10-14 1:23 PM Got in a swim lastnight, as follows: Warm up for 10 minutes with the setting on an easy flow at 50! Then set the speed at 65 and swim 6x45 seconds with 15" rest. Put setting on 55 and swim 6x1:40 with 20" RI Set on 50 and swim easy for 2 minutes to loosen from previous set. Put setting on 60 and do ladder of 2:00, 1:45, 1:30, 1:15, 1:00. with 15" RI after each. Setting 48 for 5-10 minutes easy swimming as cooldown.. It is kind of cool I just program the speed and duration and the pool changes speeds at the appropriate time. One thing with the swimspa, there is no slacking towards the end of your set. You swim the programmed speed or you end up at the back of the pool. Time to get that swim endurance back. Rainy, windy and cold out the past few days. More of the same for today. Will get a short run and weight training in this pm. I am going to ask Santa for one of those swimspa things!!!!!! |

Pro 4353 Wallingford, PA | Subject: RE: Running Pumpkins - Halloween Run Challenge Well..... no long run today. Turns out kiddo #3 doesn't have the same 48-ish hour virus the other kids had, but actually has strep throat. Between getting him to the doctor & pharmacy, etc., I won't have time to get the long run in today, and I'm afraid to push it later in the week because it will put it too close to next week's long run. I'll try to lengthen my planned runs a bit tomorrow and/or Friday to compensate some, but will be a few miles short this week. Good thing it was supposed to be a recovery week! |

I missed all of last week (expect my mandatory squadron run which made me worst) and the first part of this week. so that 10 days so i requesting to have my goal change to 20 miles and hell or high water i am going to at least walk a mile a day or make my runs. and HTFU for the rest of the month. Sounds like you've got a plan! |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Running Pumpkins - Halloween Run Challenge 50 miles done. Tomorrow's run should bring me to half way and have me back on track milage wise for my goal. It will probably come down to how quickly I recover from the race at this point. At least the race adds 18.5 miles even if I have to recover afterwards. I will need to change my mindset for winter training. It was 50 F, windy and raining off and on and I was like, mhe do I really want to go run in that? It was fine once I got going, but soon I will have to shift from pm work outs to 5am workouts.. cry. Or go trainer/treadmill instead. Tough choice. So who is training in yucky weather? |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Running Pumpkins - Halloween Run Challenge I rode today and it was 50 and windy...I was a little under dressed and was chilled. 40-50 riding and running are different..running is great but riding windy. My husband and I were talking tonight about long runs in the winter and I asked would you rather do 2-3 hour run outside in the cold or 2-3 hour run on the treadmill. We had some fun discussion about which would be better. I've done 3 hour runs with 2 hours of it on treadmill. I probably could do 3 hours on treadmill but not my first choice. |

Extreme Veteran 322 Reston, VA | Subject: RE: Running Pumpkins - Halloween Run Challenge 47 and raining here today. No worries, though, 2 miles or so this afternoon should put me right on par with 48% of the month. Got some things to take care of this morning, but I'll check in this pm after my run! |

I don't think I could make much over an hour indoors on a treadmill or trainer. You'd be surprised what you can do if you make up your mind to do it...IM training made me get it done no matter what. My long treadmill run I brought a cooler with all my liquid in it much to the amusement of the Y staff. So I'm guessing training for a 24 hour bike race in the winter of MA wouldn't be on your to do list. Trying to decide if I want to do the race in feb in FL. Thinking doing weekly trainer rides 6-12-maybe 14 hours how much fun that would be? But if it was 50 I'd go outside and do some of the ride outside then come back and do some on the trainer. |

Expert 1773 San Gabriel Valley, California | Subject: RE: Running Pumpkins - Halloween Run Challenge Haven't posted in a few days, but am on track to meet my goal. And sorry, all you people who have to deal with snow and weird things like that. I started my run this morning at 8am and it was already too hot. It got into the 90's yesterday and we will have more of the same today. However, it can get cold here (greater Los Angeles area), but we don't have snow. I would rather run outside in the cold than spend hours on the treadmill. But it can be done to spend hours inside as long as you have things with which to amuse or distract yourself. I like to go up and down in small increments with either or both of speed and incline. I only use the treadmill at the gym maybe three or four times a year and there is no TV so I don't know how much that would help. I am about to find out with an indoor bike trainer as I just got one (and have yet to set it up since the weather has been pleasant). Happy running fellow Pumpkins. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Running Pumpkins - Halloween Run Challenge One fun thing that I do, or it used to be fun was to chart my workouts on the President's Challenge. It converts your workouts into calories and you get one point per calorie burned. You then obtain award levels bronze, silver, gold, platinum. I started about 15 months ago and I will complete the platininum athletec program. It starts out easy bronze is like 40,000, silver is like 90,000 and gold is like 200,000 or whatever, but then platinum is 1,000,000. Small jump up there. I am at 540,000 calories burned so far. So like 2 1/2 years of ironman training gets you to platinum. Oh well just something to amuze some of us with. I will get the medal for the platinum award and then stop. It is alot of calories. So if 1 mile run = 100 calories then that would be the equivalent of 10,000 miles run. But it includes bike, swim, gardening, whatever also. Or you can stop at gold because that is much more duable. |

Also, I just learned about Go the Distance on the USMS site. You sign up at the beginning of the year and then log your swim miles. As soon as you have swum 50 miles, you can buy yourself a commemorative swim cap or whatever. Every 50 miles is another milestone. I am planning to sign up for it next year and I bet my swim distance dramatically increases. Anything that makes it fun or interesting is a good thing. |

Extreme Veteran 322 Reston, VA | Subject: RE: Running Pumpkins - Halloween Run Challenge 4.06 miles this afternoon puts me over last month's total miles! Once I got going the rain and 44-degree weather didn't bother me, but I was still happy to get back inside and change into dry clothes. Follow it up with some leftover paella...mmmm. Perfect for a rainy day. Happy running, pumpkins! |
