If you use a red italic font it means sarcasm --> Let me demonstrate by saying how manly I think Tom is.

See that was sarcasm back there. Love ya Tom

Also

pizza = pizza --> a yummy food item that is delicious with bacon and pepperoni toppings

pizza = sex --> which can also be quite yummy and you can decide if you prefer toppings or not

Dang! Mentor groups are informative. I never knew that about the red italic font. It took me months and months to figure out the pizza.

I know when I first started that I caught on to pizza after a few threads but it took me a long while to figure out that flowers did not mean a dozen roses.  How either one of those words came to mean what it does here, I can not even begin to fathom.

I hate to corrupt the new people... but somebody's got to do it.

Thanks for posting that, sometimes you have to draw a picture...

Morning all.

With all the talk about transitons and bricks yesterday, I did a small brick my own self. Wow, I am going to have to work on that. running after biking HURTS. I'll need to practice some transitioning as well. I know having a "dry run" with all the transitions before my first tri REALLY helped me to make sure I had everything I needed and laid out correctly. There is a video link here on BT that I'll try to find that is good for reviewing transitions.

Thanks for that, Robin. I know I'll be getting in some bricks and transition practice with my *real* training team, and I've read a lot, but was wondering what you found most challenging - and surprising - in T1 & T2 in your first race?

Funny, but the thing I found surprising was how big the transition area was. My first tri had 1500 participants and I just never thought how big of an area was involved. I was a novice veteran category (started in the dead last wave), so I was WAY in the back of the are. Finding my spot was not a problem but it could have been if I was in the middle area.
T1-I wish I had brought more water. I needed way more than I thought and my swim was in salt water. I had no idea how much that salt water taste would stay with me the whole race (and after) I could have used a whole bottle just to wash the taste away. The run from the water to the transition area was about 1/4 mile so it took a bit to get my legs under me. It was on a dock then a sidewalk over grass, accross the street, then anothersidewalk, then into the t area. No speed involved, just navigation skills needed.
T2 was easy peasy. All I had to do was to remember to take off my bike helmet. I already had my race number on. I did not use bike shoes, biked in my running shoes. That made that part easier than most. I still do not have bike shoes or pedals and may keep it that way for this years season. Since my new motto is "Complete rather than Compete" the extra speed is not really an issue for me.
I have to say, practicing the transitions before for real (getting out of water, getting on the bike, then running) REALLY made me feel much better. I am so glad I did it.

wgraves7582 - 2010-04-14 9:24 AM Morning everyone - back from KC and while I was gone for the day it turns out that my father is going to be admitted to a local nursing home for some respit care due to some health concerns from his parkinsons.  He has lived with us for 4 years now.  Basically my wife was the bearer of all the news since I was gone and I have to give kudos when deserved - she did a great job handling it all.  I spoke to the doctor (a friend) last night as my only part in the process.  We are waiting to hear back from the insurance company to determine which action to take and when it will happen.

Could be today - could be next week.  Guess our God knows a lot more than I do - LOL.  I asked for clarity on the TransIowa withdrawal and this wipes the fog away pretty quickly if I do say so myself.

I will be around - not totally with it yet - 5 hours of sleep with 20 hours of travel will do that to Bill.

Hope you all had a great day yesterday - our weather is beyond words.  Time for a bike ride tonight - in the dirt!!!

WOW Bill, Things sure do happen for a reason. Hugs to you, your wife and your Dad. My Dad had parkinsons and it was tough for all, but especially him.

Rest up and enjoy that bike. Nothing like spring weather riding. Hope you get some mud to ride through!

If possible, practice in an area like the one where your transition will be.  The thing that got me during my first race, believe it or not, was trying to get socks on in a grassy area.  My practice sessions in my living room helped with the order of things but it did not help me to account for the fact that keeping my heel down and rolling up my sock on a grassy surface caused me to take in alot of grass/clover/greenage during the rolling process.  Nothing kills your T1 time like putting on your socks, taking them off, shaking them out, and then having to put them back on again...

Once you have worked out the order of your equipment and put it down, i?t?'?s?? ?o?n?l?y? ??the little things that will get you.  I don't have anywhere around here to practice "live" transitions, so things like the slight feeling of disorientation from the swim to the bike and my legs always wanting to keep up a crazy cadence from the bike to the run were learned through experience.

Every time I see one of you guys talk about the pain after transition I get alittle full of myself.  I have never had any pain running after a good bike.  In fact I run sig faster after a ride.  I am by no means a good cyclist or runner, and don't really know what Im talking about.  But, from a few pages back, we were talking about aero position and the muscle groups it uses.  Could you guys be having trouble because of your positioning(more road than tri)?  I know even my P2 fit more like a roadie until my brother flipped the seat around pushing it forward into true aero position.  Again, I dont know what Im talking about, but its something to look into.

Training has been taking a back seat to work/life lately.  With my very first tri a mere 5 weeks away I thought I should get back into it with my whole head.  I had a (treadmill) run this morning - 4 miles in 40 minutes, which is the furthest I've ever run in my life.  I'm hoping to get out on the bike later when it warms up a bit.  I'm going on a long ride tomorrw - it's supposed to be gorgeous weather.

Happ Wednesday!

thanks SO much for that... i feel really fortunate that i'll get to practice with good mentoring in the actual race setting....and, based on what you're saying, all the more reason for me to carefully think through trying to wear contacts instead of going without in the swim (i usually wear glasses, don't really like contacts, but am trying to train in them so that i can easily see to find my bike after the swim - my uncorrected vision's not all that bad, but i'm directionally challenged & figure i'll need all the help i can get in navigating my way back to my bike during my 1st race!!).

RE the pedals, for me it was all about saving the knees (my surgeon's GOOD, but not a god!), so glad i got them sooner vs. later - really cool how different pedaling feels, and since my knees still hurt when i run, i'm trying to protect them any way i can (ok, MOST ways i can, since not running or biking's not an option ) .

Supposed is the key word here. It is all about balance

Now that you know what flowers are, we will have to teach you, and your husband about ice cream.
