I assume this is a more favorable matchup than Germany?

Is the round of 16 single elimination?

Yes and yes.

Yes. And I definitely like the matchup better than USA/Germany.

I was surprised though watching this morning the amount of people in the stands singing the US national anthem, sounds like the US has a lot of support there.  But yeah, I imagine all the locals will back their continent mates

I agree I like our chances against Ghana a bit better.  Not that they will be easy by any stretch of the imagination.  It will be tough.  It will be a good rematch of us getting knocked out during the last one.

Yeah.  I'm gonna be getting my long workout in tomorrow or Friday so it won't interfere.

This has got to be the coolest thing I've ever heard.  Can't understand a word he is saying except the players names but you know it when Donovan scores.  The passion is palpable.

Was he crying?

The only thing comparable to this commentator was in the late 60s/early 70s a commentator in Hong Kong who tend to get over-excited.  "That bastard missed the ball again!!"  The "bastard" was his son.

Italy again showing why the shouldn't advance.  Sloppy play gave Slovakia a great scoring opportunity which they easily capitalized on.

Indeed!

Hey, I've lost the plot ... can someone explain to me what Slovakia/Italy need to do to move forward, and also Paraguay/NZ. Thanks!

Italy advances if:

They beat Slovakia
Draw and Paraguay beats NZ
Draw and Paraguay and NZ draw but score more points than NZ

NZ is just the opposite of Italy

Slovakia
beat Italy and NZ loses to Paraguay
beat Italy and NZ beats Paraguay but they score enough goals to cover the goal diff (currently at -1)

 Paraguay
beat NZ
draw NZ and Italy draw Slovakia
draw NZ and Slovakia beats Italy

Group F is complicated.
Looks like Italy is out.
The Champion and Runner-up from the last WC are both out.

Missed most of the Slovakia/Italy game. Did catch the 3rd Slovakia goal, and now the Italy goal in stoppage time. 3-2 Slovakia.

European "football' is mediocre right now..France/Italy out and showed nothing...England /Germany an elimination game basically for the next round..I'm not impressed with any Euro teams...

South America has shown up..all 4 teams through....CONCACAF with a good showing...

Truly shows how it is becoming a world game

Wow, just wow.

I could only read a couple of paragraphs and then had to stop.  It amazes me how ignorant people can be and how easily they spew hate.  I read the posts on articles about the WC and I find it so unbelievable how much people can hate an event that only comes around once every 4 years.

Wow, indeed. This guy brings hate to a new level. I've actually heard the "Soccer's only popular in third world countries" argument before--recently, at work actually since the start of the WC. It's not just that the argument is wrong, it's that it's kind of elitist and bigoted. Baseball is popular in some third world countries, too. What does that prove?

Yep, a beauty. Commentators just spoke what I was thinking--finally a score from a set piece. And a long-range shot at that. Hopefully we'll get some reprieve from the whining about the ball.
