It is specifically for those of us who are slower. Makes some sense. http://www.active.com/running/Articles/Should-You-Split-Your-Long-Run.htm?cmp=291&memberid=100306030&lyrisid=20836339&page=3 Interesting - for fun you should post this on Tri Talk and say this is the only way to train for a marathon - that could be fun to watch all the posts ![]() I can't tell you how many different opinions I've read about the long run in marathon training. In the end I will do what is best for me. If nearing the end of the long runs before I start tapering I notice I am too fatigued, I would definitely consider doing a 12 hour split. I want to be prepared to run the entire distance. Being prepared also includes being uninjured. I'm sure this article would get people in tri talk ALL fired up. |

I liked it because I get guilt if I don't have time to spend over and over again to get the long runs in. That is a lot of time to dedicate which is the main reason I don't consider doing marathons. Being able to split, even some, of the long runs without impairing my ability to make it to the end, may make me be able to reconsider. Being able to run 26 miles at one time is something I would have to know that I could do so I would have to NOT split some, for sure. Don't think I have the stomach to hear all about it in tri talk! |

So how come training plans don't generally carry you clear to the mileage that you are training for? for instance only to 20-22 miles for a marathon? I have read in several articles that you don't need to run the full 26 in order to be prepared. I call BS. Some plans only have you doing 3 long runs of 20 miles, others have as many as 5. I found a plan that has me doing runs of 20, 22, 24. and 26. I tend to follow this line of thought that in order to be prepared to run 26 miles in a race, you need to experience what it feels like. 6 miles after you've already run 20 is a lot IMHO. When I was looking for plans, some had as low as 300 miles for a beginner marathon plan. I definitely wanted more than that. I know I will be slow, but I would prefer to be slow and prepared so I can finish with a minimal amount of pain and discomfort. YMMV |

Just curious why you think the 26 is important Nekkid? My plan had a 24 I think (I would have to go back and look to make sure) but we never did the 26 miler until marathon day - well besides my 32.5 miler the month before which was not a part of my plan but I knew I was ready for the marathon after that day ![]() This only applies to me no one else. I want to do the 26 miler so I am prepared for it mentally. Can I cover 26 miles in a few yours, yes. It is never a question of if, it is ony a question of how long will it take? I don't have a problem with the physical part, it is the mental part I need to focus on. Again, this is just me. If I only get a 24 miler in and not the 26, I'm not going to lose sleep over it. |
