Wow Mark...I don't know jack about dog competitions but that sounds pretty impressive

What is it about cagts and the dishwasher?? Mine ALWAYS climbs in it when its open. Half the time I don't realize it until I am trying to push the stainer thingy back in.

Yeah Home Depot is the same for us as we are always in there. I'm totally stoked about racing again!!! I totally agree that I could have much worse obsessions and I wish my hubby could understand it a little better but I guess I should be happy that he's at least agreed to support me again...even with his "fears."

I think my husband figured if you can beat em...join em. He quit smoking a year a go and has lost close to 50 pounds. He works out 5x/week and spins 3x/week. He has even taken a few swimming lessons. I think he would like to do a tri someday. They eventually come around

I actually ran the whole way. I felt pretty good. Tonight's 800m swim kicked my tail. Whew. I can tell I've not been in the water lately. I'll just have to keep at it. I wish the diet part was easier. Very discouraged about that part.Lori

Hey Gang,

Sorry to be MIA for so long. I have been biking but that is it for the past2 weeks as I have had some real shoulder pain -perhaps from too much focus on the swim? Anyways I have enjoyed the extra time on the bike and I am hoping to get back into the pool on Wednesday.

Mark- lucky you to have 3 labs. I have an aging chocolate lab who is on her last legs and we have loved having her.

My first race is June 11- sprint distance.

It is spring break here so I won't be around much this week as I am hanging out with my kids.

Keep training everyone.

That is awesome Marianne, congrats to him!! I keep hoping Mike will come around and has a few times. He bought a bike last year and rode it (literally) a handful of times but never again and he keeps saying he wants to run with me but then when I ask he says no. I will still try and pray that he does come around

Funny thing about the diet, I have found that training and diet go hand in hand. When I am consistently training I tend to automatically eat better.

Michelle - For you, I did the hard part, pulling on a yellow swim cap and getting in the pool.
Have you had any luck getting in a few lengths during sammies swim lessons.  That would be an excellent way to do two things at once. Just 100 yards and you're on your way.

You got that right Lucky for me I am now following a plan which gives me focus so I will be getting in the water regularly. Sad that I need a goal to get it done but hey, whatever works, right?!

I was doing that but unfortunately she was freaking out with me in the pool and not being with her. Soooo, I will be going during lap times when I can go alone!

Happy to read all the great conversation. I'm really having a off week, maybe time change. Just not feeling it this week. Off work tomorrow, hoping it will improve my disposition. Busy week at work and will have a full day tomorrow. Garage door collapsed, new one in am, then yearly physical, then dog to vet for her IBS( yes a dog with irritable bowel). Hope after a bike and a run suppose to be 75* here. Spring yeah!!!!

On call till 7am. Hope I get to sleep too.

I know you will do great in your HIM in June.

Michelle just keep asking, maybe a short easy run, could be intimidated that you are too good?

Anesthesiadoc, the pounds will come off, it just takes longer than wanted. Stick with it. Have you read any of the blog on the paleodiet (i'm not advocating but some of the ideas may be helpful) I was reading about a few weeks ago< some interesting ideas> just a thought>

I wasn't going to say much and here I just keep going on and on.

goodnight all.

Morning peeps! I am starting the baby and me swim class again with Sam. I spoke with the aquatic director yesterday about allowing me to work with Sam in the morning during swim lesson time. Unfortunately, there are too many classes going on this session so I won't be able to. However, the baby and me class started up this week so she allowed me to sign up late. I know the instructor and she is really good with allowing the kids to go at their own pace so I know she won't have a problem with me working more on Sam swimming by herself...I'm even taking her life jacket

I am supposed to ride my bike today but for some reason my knee is really bothering me...I'm thinking it has something to do with the cleat. Is it possible to cause this much pain if it comes loose and i'm twisting my foot/leg without realizing it? If so, is it something I can fix myself or should I go in to my LBS to have them double check that is in fact what is causing it?

Marianne, that is great that 1)you are getting closer and closer to running and 2) you actually got to ride outside...I'm jealous

So Marianne mentioned riding outside and Mark and I have talked about this as well so I have a question...

What do you do to entertain yourself when riding or running outside?

I don't really do anything exciting when running but when riding I moo at cows, cluck at chickens, and neigh at horses. I have even been known to stop and take a picture or two with my phone. Now that I mention it, I actually got a picture of a cow looking at me as I was mooing at him...I posted it on facebook so i'll have to find it and post it...it's hilarious

Have you seen the 10 point bike safety checklist.  It's something you should do before every ride.  I just though about this after writting the long blog below.  The little screws holding the cleats on must be tight.  If they come loose it's possible to strip out the nutsets in bed of your shoes and ruin the shoes.  Overthings can come loose or your bike with much more serious problems.  I'll send the checklist when I get back home.  Go ride towards the blue hole in the sky.  Thats where the sun is.  Remember the sun?  it isn't always grey in washington, just mostly.

Back to the discussion of Cleats and Bike Fit.

You're bike is already on the trainer, so i offer a bit of do it yourself analysis.  Nobody will focus as intensely at your foot position as you will.  Setup a video camera on a chair a couple of feet behind your bike.  You want to record the motion of your foot while cranking the pedals.  You want to review what your foot does with easy, moderate and hard riding.  You might want to put a piece of tape , vertical, on the heel of your shoes.

What you're looking for are movements where your foot goes in any direction but up and down.  Like tipping toward the outside, rolling the ankle to the inside.  If your cleates are in the wrong location you'll see your foot attempting to self adjust.  But the cleat will prevent the adjustment and eventually your knee will complain.

Front to back adjustment.  The preferred or normal location is to have the spindle of the pedal directly under the ball of your foot.  Sit in a chair with your bike shoes on.  move your finger along the side of your big toe until you find that bump on the outside of your foot where your big toe bends.  run a piece of tape straight across the center line of your foot.  Now get on the bike and compare where you pedal attaches to the crank (spindle) with the taped line on your shoe.

Another adjust is left right,  If you have particular wide hips, (bow legged) you might benefit from a minor adjustment out.  If your ankle flexs out when you pedal. move you cleat out a bit.  If your knee turns in maybe you can benefit from moving your clete in.  Your shoes should never touch the crank, thats too far.

Both shoes should be setup the same.  Shoe fit and cleat placement will not compensate for a problem with form.  make little changes and see how it feels.

Sorry for the long post.  Now go for a long ride.
Mark

Wow, it's been a long time since I've posted.  I've been gone a lot for work and traveled a little on my own, too.  This is the first week since the end of January that I've been home every night.  I leave on Monday for Hawaii for 9 days.  That'll be the last of my traveling for a while.  I've been getting back into the swing of things this week.  I ran on Sunday and Tuesday, elliptical Monday, and did the spinning class last night.  I NEED to get myself into the pool!

^^^Just had to throw that in there

Mark, thanks a ton for your book  Seriously though I will be heeding your advice today to see what is going on. I didn't ride yesterday since my knee hurt so bad from riding two days in a row. However, speaking of sun, I see it trying to poke through this morn ~ I was starting to think I had forgot what it looked like to be sunny. Anyway, I'm fine this morn so I KNOW its something with my bike that is doing it. Luckily today is an easy run day so I'm thinking it will be another fun filled stroller/dog run...I can only to that on short runs but they both LOVE running with me that I hate to not take them both when I can. Hmmm, come to think of it, maybe I can ask my hubby today if he wants me to wait and we can all go when he gets home...

Last October, I took my Chocolate lab Addi running with me.  the plan was to check the hilly parts of the seattle marathon course.  We got lost (but thats another story).  We wondered around a bit before finding our way back on the map.  While I was running and looking for landmarks, I took my eyes off of addi for just a second.  this was the moment we passed a small breakfast/coffee shop with the front door propped open.  Addi hung a hard left into the deli.  She made it about 15 feet inside before she hit the end of the flexi lead.  I jerked and yelled her name and she came flying out of the resturant.  I don't think she stole anyones breakfast.  But she might have.
