I have 12 years of competative swimming and then college water polo.  My swim is my strength compared to my bike and run.  Plus I hate swimming.  Its really tough for me mentally to get to the pool.

So it's be choice and not design? I noticed that QT2 programs in general seemed very non swim specific.

A little of both -- there's a much bigger QT2 focus on bike / run than on swimming and if I'm going to cut any workout short its going to be a swim.  Although in addition to yards in the pool I also have a swim cord routine that I do 2 times per week.

Just want it to be said that I loaded this photo last night . ..  before it was announced that BT would be a partner with Team RWB.  Really great cause and the who I am running (or walking) for this weekend and through Memorial Day.

great pictures Kelly and Carrie. New question on stroke count. When I am swimming laps there is some glide with the push off on the turn. How do you deal with that for the count. I tried to stroke immediately. According to the total immersion video I should have a stroke count of about 17-20. I did get one time I hit 21, but mostly I was 22-24. My first time I had a whooping 28 strokes to hit the side of the pool. SO I have work to do, but is any push off glide factored in?

Ok that makes sense-I am using it right now make adjustments in my stroke and can see a difference as I struggle to make the change.

Back to normal life today.  I have an early meeting at work so easy run this morning and then a longer bike tonight (hopefully I'll get home early enough to ride outside).  I'm actually more sore today than I was yesterday, thankfully all my training today is at ZR/Z1.

annoyance: after my run sunday i felt great.  after participating in a charity walk with my kids, my right shoulder/trap was killing from holding a pulling dog and my left foot hurts as I think it got bruised from getting stepped on several times.  sigh.

question: on my long ride/run this weekend I took kellys advice and used more sports drink (gatorade endurance) than water.  i think it may have actually worked for me.  the issue is i felt like i was eating candy all morning, so much sugar, which i suposed is good, particularly on the run with added GUs instead of bars/food.  any thoughts?

supposed to have an easy run today, but it may turn into a bike or eliptical since my foot still hurts from said walk.

Two of my dogs pull me too, I have to turn the leash over to my husband after a while or I'm all torqued the next day.

On the drink - I buy powdered (GU Brew or Heed) and mix to my own taste which is pretty weak.  In a race you will get full strength, but maybe try watering it down a bit.  And for food I prefer non-gel based things like Gu Chomps or Luna Moons (which they don't make anymore - ARRR!!!).  Again for a race means you have to carry your own, but I prefer to have something I know I will like vs. gels that my stomach typically cannot handle for a long period of time.

Kelly - Thank you for sharing the photos from your race.  It looks like it was a great experience.  Curious....what does it take to qualify for AG Nationals?  Certain time?  Certain age group rank in the race?  Nice bike time, btw.  You are a beast on the bike, too

Jeff - Sorry about the foot and shoulder pain.  Hopefully it's just some soreness and an easy day will take care of it. 

 

This is a recovery week for me (according to my training plan), so all my hours are cut in half.  I hate it.  LOL  I am keeping my runs the same for my half marathon prep though.  I cut out core work due to lack of time when I started the olympic distance training plan.  I felt a lot better when I was doing it, so I'm adding it back in.  Just twice a week....

Have I mentioned that I am hungry?  All the time?  I want to eat even more on low activity days.  Where is the logic in that?

As far as sports drinks go I like to mix my own.  Most do seem to sugary to me or leave a weird film in my mouth so I roll with a product I used from my lifting days that has 20g of maltodextrine per scoop and NUUN tablets.  Or you could roll with a bulk quick carb product and crystal light.  Just some ideas.

As for me I started to try and lose the last 5-10 lbs I want off my midsection this week.  It's actually nice to have an overly structured diet set up so that it takes any thinking out of the equation.  Also set a 5k TT PR this morning of 22:10 on the back end of a brick.  Had a ton in the tank too.  Excited to see where I can push to this summer.

Ran my longest to date this morning. 7.2 miles, at an 8:21 pace.  There was a pretty good climb to get to the top of my hill, about 1.5 miles.  My calves were burning.  Without that hill, i think I could have ran 10 without an issue.

At Rev3 they are serving gatorade endurance - gatorade products work for me but I feel like i am eating melted jolly ranchers.  In any event be it Infinite, Cytomax, etc., they are all very sweet.

I just need a palate cleanser.  Maybe i'll bring a zip lock bag of pickles.

to porperly cleanse ones palate you eat ginger, the Japanese figured that out centuries ago!!!

Pickles are a great food for a race, i have heard about people drinking pickle juice prior to long races to avoid cramps, it could be an old wives tale, but there are some that swear by it.
