evillarroel - 2011-05-19 3:28 PM I have so much time in my hands today... It feels very unusual. My wife is joining me tomorrow night (she's still at work). Kiddos are staying behind, they hate long races and I don't blame them. Watching Ironman is almost as tedious as racing one...

So, if you don't know what to do with your time, take us behind the scenes of an Ironman competition.  Tell us what you do when you show up on Thursday for a Saturday race.  What thoughts are going through your head?  How do you relax, or do you?  What is your ritual, etc.  What is this expo deal?  Are all 2500 triathletes there already?  Do you watch the weather, etc.

The peeps want to know, all right maybe just me.

First, you have to show up on Thursday because packet pickup is always mandatory two days prior to the race. So is the athlete's dinner and briefing that happened last night and I didn't go to (ehemm).

Today, I went to dip in the water for a brief 15 minutes to check it out (they have an official swim practice between 8 and 10AM) and after that I went to transition to drop my bags and rack my bike.

Everybody's here, there's a lot of sizing each other up (which I hate) and tons of nervous energy in the air. The swim start is somewhat narrow and it will be carnage for about 800 yards. The weather is very hot and muggy and winds have pickep up quite a bit since yesterday, so this is going to be a very tough race.

Today after doing all my stuff I had lunch with a friend that's also racing (and his wife) and now I'm in my room just kicking back again. Getting tons of hydration. The expo is big, lots of people trying to sell you bikes, wheels, clothing, shoes, etc. I got my packet and left immediately to avoid all the nervous people. I think of tomorrow as the moment to prove what you're made of, the intimidation of others means nothing when you're battling your own demons during the race.

Ernesto,

Judy and I drove the last 50 miles of the bike course on the way in today.  Make sure that you watch out for HER around mile 70 to 80.  Good luck tomorrow.  You are an Ironman!

Is Ernesto going to tweet us during the race from his mobile phone?  Because that would be cool.

(7:28 AM.  Just passed first swim marker).

Ah, Texas.  Where the cow bells could be your supporters along the side of the road or, well, cows.

80 degrees and cloudy in The Woodlands today. There are 5 blind athletes who are guided by 5 seeing athletes. There are husband and wife teams, cancer survivors, etc. Incredible emotion in the air. What an experience just to be here watching!

Ok, This number:

Cycle

2011-05-20

HR/Pace labelRange data labelCumulative Time in zone
1 - Recovery109 - 137
2 - Extensive Endurance138 - 149
3 - Intensive Endurance149 - 156
4 - Sub-Threshold157 - 166
5a - SuperThreshold167 - 170
5b - Anaerobic Endurance172 - 176
5c - Power177 - 183

Comments about this HR Zone:

Hi Dangremond, Yeah, I know it was a little confused, but since I forgot to include the table I was talking about in the previous post, I decide to put it in a diferent one.

Sorry

But any way the thing is that this numbers come from my LT test that I did yesterday, in order to start training with heart rate base instead of RPE, wich I think it´ll be better, if I´m not wrong.

Thank You for the input

I think you can train by either (HR or RPE) - its up to you.  I train by a mix of the two.  There are a lot of good books and articles on HR training - Friel, Maffetoen and Carcmichael would all have training plans based on HR training.  Matt Fitzgerald has a book all based on RPE and Carmichael also uses it as well (but prefers power for the bike) Friel uses the HR breakdown as you show in your table.  You would break your season down into various periods (concept of periodization) and based on where you were in your season (base, building, peak, race) your workouts, based on HR would vary).  This is in the Triathletes Training Bible.

I think it is up to you completely if you use RPE or HR.  As I stated before, I like knowing my LT (assume from your table your (running?) LT is 167)?  I find it useful in longer harder efforts to know where my theoretical limit is.   It also allows me to build out my zone 1 and 2 that I know (but don't always respect) that I should do most of my runs in.  Just my brief thoughts.

Jackie,

That "joke" wasn't meant to fool anyone.  I just thought the idea of the athletes tweeting from the course, especially the water, was amusing.   (Treading water in order to pull out cell phone from swim cap to tweet position).

In any event, the real actual live Ernesto seems to be eating up the course, finishing the swim, bike, and both transitions in 7 hours and 5 seconds and his first half marathon in 2 hours and 11 seconds if I'm reading correctly.

He is one fast machine! Btw, I understood that the rules forbid any form of communication with the world during the IM race, so tweeting is out, sorry... Can't wait to hear his story!

Thanks to all of you guys! I thought a lot about you in that solitude of the run course when you leave the main area and just run the loop with only your thoughts... You fed my anger to keep going when it got tough.

The heat was tremendous, humidity through the roof, I'm blistered, chafed, in pain but I'm absolutely elated with my result. Thanks for all the cheering, good vibes and support. You guys mean a lot to me.

Jackie, thanks for coming to the race and cheering live on the course, OMG this girl was jumping and screaming like a teenager!!

Race report coming up. now to get some zzzzzzs!
