Did either person tell you how to prevent your issues?  If I could what I would do is find a chiropractor or sports injury specialist that is very experienced in dealing with sports injuries.  Sounds like that you didn't really find a sports specific dr.  But, my sessions are quite short.  15 minutes tops.  They can be painful.  Not everything they do is painful, but when he hits the right spot I sure do feel it.  And the therapy should involvement you (or them) moving your body while he manipulates your muscles/ligaments/joints.  It sounds to me like number 1 did it more right but limited it to what you were complaining about and nothing else.  I do feel pain after and am told to expect pain.  But I have always been told to continue my activities and that I could even leave a session and go workout right away.  I am not sure why you would have been told to take a week off.  My biggest concern would be that neither told you what you could do to prevent your issues from coming back.  Tends to tell me that they are not that experienced or just want you to keep coming back for treatment.

Chris,

Thanks for your response! Ya, for #1 I didn't move my leg around much, if at all. I am in Orange County, but if your guy is legit I may be willing to go out there. Do you mind posting his info here, or maybe you can PM me. Do you happen to know any legit practitioners in the OC area?

Thanks again!

Hi! Thank you for your input! The first person didn't mention at all how to prevent my issues, while the second one said that it's probably muscle imbalance and that my left leg is shorter than my right leg. From what you're saying, it sounds like #2 is more like what you experience in terms of moving the leg while pressing on the muscle. Both places say they're sports medicine experts or something along the lines of that, but you may be right in that they don't have much experience. Do you see a chiropractor sports injury person? I was adjusted for the first time in my life from #2, and am not too comfortable having that done to me without knowing the person is qualified, so just wondering if you've received that type of treatment as well before?

Thanks so much for your input and suggestions!

I do get adjusted while I am there.  I've always been tentative towards going to a chiropractor in the past cause of the stories you hear, etc but finally my ITBS is got so bad that I find someone who did ART and took a chance since he was a chiropractor.  Best choice I ever made really.  But my guy is very experienced and is a sports specialist.

Sounds like to me you need to know do some strength training to get rid of that muscle imbalance.   That's what I had to do for my ITBS.  It took me a long while and I had to continue to go back for treatment until I got my muscles more in line but he let me know straight out that it would take more then one treatment.

HIM over, according to my watch, 44 minute swim, sum 3 hour bike, then came the run. I had stomach cramps as soon as I got off the bike, had the run/walk the 13.1 miles, but I finished. The temps were in the mid 90's when I crossed the finish line. Overall, I was right about 6 hours 55 minutes, not pretty, but I didn't give up. Need to work on nutrition plan for next year,

Way to tough out the run in the heat...  I don't do well in that kind of temps.

What do you think caused the cramps?  The heat?  THe nutrition plan you had in place?  It's hard to know how you will react to nutrition unless you train in the conditions you race in.  90s would throw me way off

In Oceanside? That is during my kid's spring break, thinking about using it as a reason to keep working out through the winter.

Yeah. it's a good race, but water is a bit cold, and air can be cold as well.  Sells out usually in September (?) i believe and i saw a reference in the Calif. forums that someone's tri club said it was close to full, so......

What was your strength routine? I have a hip issue...same situation with the need for a stronger left side. Chiro has helped immensely as has the Rolfer. This thursday I'm doing deep tissue...but I know if I don't get to the gym, it's all for naught.

Had to feel great to cross that line. Sometimes I think the races where I struggle are the most rewarding.

It was nice to get away. Stayed just outside of Bemedji. Did nothing but drink beer and fish. But I did my running workouts since I had no pool or bike. We drove thru SC on our way back to the twin cities.

I have one more tri this year, Santa Barbara Long Course, but I am thinking of bailing on it.  My biking has been woefully short (like, once a week), swimming and running are probably OK, but it's an almost HIM distance (1/34/10).  I am still going to wait and see, right now I am on the "no" side.

Didn't help that I tweaked my lower back on Saturday getting off the bike (about .10 into the ride at the bathrooms, still rode 53 with it tweaky, but it put me on the couch for two days) and got an ear infection (seriously?  haven't had one of those since I was what, 12????) so can't swim bike or run for a few days.

What is left of yor tri season, and what are you going to focus on this fall/winter?

Two things for me, weight loss and I am looking forward to ramping up my running this offseason... smartly.  I always intend to focus on running in the fall, and then I get injured or sick or....  I put together a race calendar to motivate the running.  The only thing I've registered for is Malibu half mary as of yet (and Calif. 70.3), but here is the going forward schedule through May

Oct. 1 - Manhattan Beach 10K
Oct. 16 - Xterra Pt Mugu trail run (11 or 18K)
Oct. 30 - Rock & Roll half marathon
Nov. 13 - Malibu half marathon
Dec. 11 - XTerra Crystal Cove (17K)

2012
Jan 15.  - L.A. 13.1
Feb. 5 - Redondo Beach 10K
March 10 - Solvang Century
March 31 - Calif. 70.3
May 5 - Wildflower 70.3
May 12 - Palos Verdes half marathon

I did things that worked on the opposite planes of motion then biking and running.  There is one exercise that I don't know the name of it but when I explained it to someone they described it as peeing like a dog.  Great visual eh?  lol  Get down on all 4's and then you lift your knee straight out to the side so that your leg becomes parallel with the ground.  I also did these. http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-241-286--13410-0,00.html

Now I mostly just do my TRX routine once or twice a week.  Although I have been slacking and need to get back at it.  But my house is all torn up (remodeling) and I have lost my usual location that I do my strength training at.  I need to just get over that and find another spot for a bit.  It took me a while to get the hip back in shape and until I did it still required some ART, but now when I go in for whatever he tests the leg out and it's all staying on track.

I still have my big race of the season, Elephant Man long course at the end of Sept.  Training is going ok for that but I have been a little lax on the swimming so doubt there will be a fast swim and I seem to be going backwards on the bike.  I think I need a little mental refocus there and need to kick it up a bit.  Speaking of the bike, I then roll on into Tour de Tucson, 109 miles, in Nov so need to get the long mile rides in.  Not going to get much of a break after that as I got suckered into running the disney marathon as a relay.  So I got 13.1 to throw down in Jan plus I'll be training for HIM Memorial Hermann in Texas in April.  Going to be interesting to try and do the bike training through the winter.  Despite popular believe it does actually get cold here in Tucson, and very very dark given that they have no street lights really.  Long rides shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Last year for Oceanside 70.3 on 4/2 I followed Jorge's winter indoor training plan (mostly, did 2 of the 4 days and a long outside ride).  ALthough I rode less than the last time I did it, I moved up in percentage ranking.  I highly recommend incorporating that program over the winter.
