Hooray for a normal MRI!!! That is super good news!

Don't feel like a wuss. You are smart to get the MRI. You could have done serious damage if it was something serious.

Besides I get the title of wuss today. I have a little colt that my daughter gave my husband, who gave it to me and I feel like I am dying! I just shut down during colds.

Oh no! Get well soon.

Guess what? The MRI came back normal! Yay! Now to come up with both a training plan and a way to deal with tendonitis. Now that I know what I'm dealing with, I'll feel better about pushing through the pain. (did I mention I feel like a total wuss, though?)

Yay indeed, that is good to hear. So it is tendonitis??? I'd like to know more about what your plan is, please keep me in the loop. My wife has been diagnosed with that in her knee and is unable to run at the moment. And my wife is no wuss (and neither are you, being careful is much smarter then risking long term injury), so I can't imagine the pain of that stuff. I'd like to know how you control or minimize the pain.

I hope the weekend is great, what is everyone's plan for this weekend? It is the middle of running season, is anyone racing? I have a bike ride tonight and a long run on Sunday. We are moving furniture and doing a few things for my MIL, so Saturday is kinda shot.

The swim class last night was great! Instructor gave me some very helpful pointers to focus on this week.

Everyone have a great day. I'm off to the gym for a run, since it's cold and windy here today.

Is that the swim class with your husband? How did it go?

And I guess that question is a bit larger, does anyone train with their spouse? If so, how is it? If not, why not? For me it is no, since my wife isn't a triathlete we don't "train" together. We do an occasional bike ride together, and have begun shopping for a new bike for her. And the occasional trip to the "Y", but we go our seperate way once we get there.

Well, after two days of not working out, I feel like a total slug.  Things are still a total mess outside.  On top of several inches of new snow, it was freezing rain ALL DAY yesterday.

Yesterday was one of those days where I really wished a owned a trainer.  I could have gotten a good two hour spin while my kid napped.  I did get some good cleaning done though.

I'm just at a loss as to what to do with my day.  My daycare is still closed, and I'm afraid of what the roads are like.  That said, I just don't think I can spend ANOTHER whole day inside.

I do have to go out to go pay our vet bill - and my gym is just down the road.  I think if I keep it slow (assuming I can get out of my driveway) I can make it.  Gotta do something physical today though....

We do not train together much. He's only done one tri, and I've done several. His biggest fear is the swim, so I'm hoping that this class will move him back toward tri's.

Seperate from that, he is much stronger and faster than me, so training together gets frustrating for me, and holds him back.

We do occasionally ride together, and it's a training ride for me, but a casual ride for him.

The weather in the pacific northwest has been crazy. I would be going nuts, too.

I got out for a 30 minute run today. It was probably the single most miserable run ever. It was 27 out, with 18-23 mph winds. I was layered, but I still got a wind burn on my legs and my face. I need to run 5-6 tomorrow, and I just don't know how it is going to happen.

Still working on my training plan. Now I know why people hire a coach. Putting it together is a lot of work! lol

I hope everyone is having a good evening.

The weather sounds horrible. Hopefully it will clear up and warm up a bit for you soon so you can get out! Having cabin fever is no fun.

Hopefully the weather will clear up and warm up so you can get your long run in.

Well, it's 12 degrees out right now -- sunny and no wind. Or I can wait until it warms up a little, but then the wind picks up. Decisions, decisions. lol

My husband and I run together sometimes. It happens more frequently when the days get longer, because his preference is to run in the mornings before he goes to work, and I'm not a big fan of running in the dark... He's a pretty casual runner - at most we run together maybe 2-3 mornings per week for 2.5 - 3 miles, and that's all the "training" he does. He does enjoy biking too, but we just haven't had much opportunity to do a lot of that together since the kids were born. We used to do a lot of mountain biking together back in the day... Now that our kids are getting a little older and more independent, I'm hoping we can do more riding together, too.

Well it's been crazy couple of days.  Went on a great job interview Thursday (sent my resume on Wed) and they've already scheduled me to come in again next week..yeah! Decent 6 mile run in 20 degree weather afterwards..interview high!  Friday I had a lesson with a boy I'd taught 2 weeks prior..and that's when it all started going downhill!!  I teach adaptive skiing (people/kids with developmental or physical disabilities)..well this boy was a little more than I could handle.  He had a total meltdown as we got on the ski lift and ended up headbutting me with his helmet..so now I have a very nice, very distinctive and very sore black eye!! Got quite a lot of looks today as I had 2 more lessons (one good, one not so good!) Martinis are helping!

I've also had really bad shoulder pain..especially today pushing kids along and helping to pick them up.  It's right in the rotator cup and sometimes feels like it's shooting down my arm.   It's been a little stiff the last couple of weeks, but I'm not exactly sure what I should do..been taking advil..but I guess I'll wait and see how the pain is when I swim, etc...

On a much happier note (and basically the only thing keeping my happy right now..besides my wonderful family of course) is my new baby...just got a Quintana Roo CD0.1 Ultegra...pick her up on Friday.  Got her for an amazing price and she fits like a dream.  Really looking forward to spring!

Everyone have a happy, safe and black-eye free weekend!!

Ouch! I'm sorry for the rough lesson. I hope you get good news about the job.

Congrats on the bike!

As to training with my husband -- we don't. At all. Well, I guess that's not exactly true. Sometimes we take a bike ride together, but his idea of a ride is 3-5 miles. He doesn't run at all. He's been doing some research for work, however, and has fallen into a lot of the persistence hunting research, and he's just about convinced that he should be running. Once it warms up, we may go out together. I will start him on the couch to 5k program because he can't run at all.

I did my run at about 11:00. It was 28 and the wind wasn't really blowing a lot yet. I was actually a little too warm for the first mile or two, what with the sun beating on me, but that quickly ended when the wind picked up. By time I got home, the wind was at 18 mph. It ended up at 25 again, so I probably should have gone a little earlier. All in all, however it was a good run -- 6.67 miles.

I'm back.  Sorry I have been MIA for the past week.  We had an emergency at work that I was putting in some long hours.  It isn't quite over yet, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.  The good news is that I have been able to get most of my workouts in still.  I only missed one planned spin class.

For those experiencing the snow and cold, I can definitely relate.  The temperature up here in NH was a balmy 5 this morning.  We also have been finally get some snow, but anything less than a foot is just a dusting.  Wink  Regardless, the roads are pretty messy right now, so it will be treadmill running for the week and maybe longer if it doesn't warm up.  I am soooo looking forward to the spring to get outside.

Hope everyone has a great day of training.

Training this week has been... well... not so much.

I have felt bad the past few days but right now I am beginning to feel better. Hopefully this means that I will be all better to train tomorrow *fingers crossed*

However, now it seems that my 18 month old daughter has RSV. This winter has taken a toll on us. My husband is going to watch her tomorrow night so I can get a good workout in.

Hope everyone had a great time training this weekend. Have a great week this week

Good morning everyone. I hope your weekends were enjoyable.

I had a bit of a challenging run this weekend, as I continue to build for an HM in March. My long run last week, 8 miles, was great, quick and really just a nice run. This week I went about 1.5 miles further and it was a painful trudge. Slow from the start, I felt lethargic and just couldn't seem to get it together. I think that the build is taking it's toll on me, and it kinda surprised me, given the breakthroughs I had the past few weeks.

So, now the question for the group. I think I am going to cut back a bit this week, do some recovery, then pick up the build next week. Does that sound like a good idea, or does this sound more mental and I need to just run through it?

Thanks for any input you might have. Enjoy the week!

In my experience, you need to listen to your body.  If it is telling you it needs some recovery time, then I would listen.  I was feeling the same way after a few weeks of increased workload.  I took one day completely off(2 days off that week instead of 1) and felt like a new man the day after.  I think there are 2 ways to recover.  You can do one or 2 days of complete rest or scale back your volume and intensity for a week. I have never trained for a HM so I can't really say which is better.

Good luck.

Do you log your training here or somewhere else? I don't see a link to your log at the bottom of your post, so I'm guessing either you have it set to keep your log private or only allow "friends" access... It would be easier to comment if I/we could take a look at what you've been doing.... But generally, I would say if your run feels like a painful trudge, then a little rest is probably in order... Have you been following a training plan? Have you been constantly building, or do you allow yourself some recovery days or weeks? The recovery part of training is important. To get stronger, we need to apply appropriate training stress followed by recovery. During that recovery, your body compensates for the applied stress, and comes back stronger. Without the recovery, the accumulated stress can eventually wear you down.

Here's a good article on the subject: http://www.racerxvt.com/article/recovery-training

OK, you should be able to see my logs now, I had a setting wrong. The plan I have been following is a modified Higden intermediate plan. 4 medium runs and 1 long run, with about a 10% build every week, mostly on long day. I think a few runs did not make it onto the log, but most everything is there. I have been biking a couple of days and swimming off and on as well. I have been building for about 5 weeks now, so I believe that a recovery week is in the cards for this week. I'm pretty sure I will cut back a bit this week, then pick it back up next week.

Thanks.
