I've never had a head on collision and usually communicate ahead of time so it's a non-issue. But there was this one woman who would always ask me if I wanted to circle swim of just split the lane when I used to do Masters. I always responded split the lane with a perplexed look on my face??? You ALWAYS circle swim when there are two people. Two reasons -- flip turn are tough with a split lane and more importantly, sa third, or fourth or fifith person can easily jump into the lane if you're circle swimming. If your splitting a lane, its difficult for additional people to join. |

But, I'm still going to "request" to split the lane because I do not do flip turns, and anyone I swim with will be either too fast or too slow to circle swim with. Luckily @ 5am there are not many people swimming. Edited by karen26.2 2012-04-12 9:52 AM |

Master 2538 Albuquerque | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED It's rare at my gym that someone is actually swimming in the lanes when I need to share a lane. Maybe 1 time out of 5-6 I'll see another actual swimmer there. Usually it's just older people walking/floating/dog paddling. Which is fine. Luckily, Tuesday was the first time in MONTHS I've had to share a lane (hoping it was a fluke, the guy was a tool). |

Extreme Veteran 826 Bristow | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED I have always split the lane at my Master's class. Luckily we have never had too many that we can't. Only a few of us actually do flip turns so it works out 99% of the time. However, with the new knowledge I learned today I will take that into account next time I share and make sure I ask. Did 1150 yds this morning and did my first non-pull/kick 100s. Kicked my butt but felt good and did a 1:55 on the first and then faded to 2:00 on the last one. I did some "band" work as well during my pulls instead of using a bouy. I felt like my abs got more involved in trying to keep my hips up. Is that how it should feel? Also got in 30min Z1 run afterwords that was OMG slow! Patience is key though I know when starting the HR training! Hope everyone has a nice day! Edited by kidtri33 2012-04-12 10:12 AM |

I hope so because my core is as sore today as it's been in a long, long time. |

LOL I do flip, but I still prefer to split if there are only 2 of us. If there are 3, then I will absolutely circle swim. It's annoying to have to touch someone's toes all the time or have your own toes grabbed all the time due to different speeds, but it's the nature of public pools. |

Growing up as a swimmer we'd have 10-15 people in a lane. The problem with splitting for 2 and circling for 3 is that as the 3rd person entering the lane, you have to stop both people and make them wait (you can't have two of you start circling while the third person has no idea what's going on). Also if the default is circle you can slip into any lane without interupting the other person. |

Also if the default is circle you can slip into any lane without interupting the other person. We did the same when I was on swim team. It was crowded as heck! They put us in lanes according to speed though, so it wasn't as insane as it would be at my pool if we were required to circle swim. There are people who do something that looks like breaststroke but on their backs (can you even visualize this? LOL). Honestly, it makes sense to set circle swim as a rule, but they'd never enforce it. The lifeguards don't care. Btw, it seems that when I swim in the evenings, I always get stuck in the lane by the wall with the stairs. Every time I swim in that spot, at that time, this little old guy hops into my lane with these water weights and pumps his arms up and down with the weights while walking down half the lane. He is hilarious. At first I was annoyed. I mean, there is a recreational pool with 12 lanes right next to the metered pool. I don't mind so much anymore. It makes me smile. |

From what i understand it is a free ride, everyone is welcome, and i am betting it will be a pretty large group, a TT buddy i saw last night said it was close to 100 people last year, if her remembered correctly. Figured i would post that here since i am pretty sure half this mentor group is doing Rev3 Quassy or live in CT. Jen, you should come out for the weekend and ride with us ;o) |

Maps just went up for my Oly the end of the month too. Course sets up really well for me. 1500m straight in off the boat. Headwind to start and then the same wind at our backs coming back in on the bike. Should give me some time to make sure my HR is in check before the 10k. |

Expert 1481 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED As usual my house survived the entire winter without getting sick to get the early spring flu. It's like clockwork. I'm not complaining I have friends who's households are sick all winter. Still though no fun when the entire house is tethered to the bathroom for multiple reasons. I had to skip yesterday with everybody being sick and then last night I finally got sick although not nearly as bad as everybody else. I had the chills and body aches for roughly 12 hours which isn't that bad. I did go to bed with socks, sweat pants, a very warm UA hoodie and my fleece running cap on all under a heavy comforter and was still cold. Got in bed at 9 and didn't get up until 6. At 6 I felt toasty and knew I was better. Went to the gym and ran two miles and swam a thousand yards to further work it out of my system but not over do it. Pace was easy and it worked out any lingering body aches I had. I do feel drained but should be good by tomorrow. |
