My mother's day ride started really well. Then at mile 8, I crashed. My ankle swelled immediately. I hobbled to my car using my bike as a crutch. I loaded my bike and called my hubby. I drove the 2 miles home and just parked in front of my house. My dear hubby did everything after that. Took me to the ER. I have a broken ankle!
The hospital put a temporary cast until tomorrow when I see an ortho tomorrow before putting on the permanent cast. My inlaws think I should have been casted today.

No workouts since Thursday.

But not for a bad reason.  Went out of town for my son's college grad. My little boy is now all grown up and an Electrical Engineer. Proud momSmile.  He also has a job.  (Even bigger smile)  Could have done something today, but was tired and decided work in the garden instead.  Now, the ankle is protesting. Oh well.

I started running on the Alter G last Friday.  Did 10 minutes at 50% body weight.  It was really cool.  I will get to run at each of my PT sessions as long as my ankle behaves.

Threejs - 2012-05-09 11:05 PM So I have been having an interesting week.  I can totally relate to the fact that it is draaaaaging on forever.  Earlier this week I had the brilliant idea of doing steps after my core workout.  My knees haven't recovered yet.  It is like the knee joint itself hurts -  not just sore muscles.  Can't even do any type of squats.  Looks like motrin for a few more days.  Hopefully it will go away soon.
Steps?

Yup, the old fashioned way of running up and down the steps which were concrete.  Seemed like such a good idea at the time but probably won't try that again for a while - knees have recovered.

I know it's only Friday, but I'm ready for the weekend NOW! This week of training has kicked my butt and I'm ready for an awesome weekend. Tomorrow is my birthday and I'm doing a 5k (that ends with fries and beer that would make me sick, but I'll share them with my husband!). Then I'm hoping someone lets me sleep in and brings me a yummy breakfast for Mother's Day!

Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend.

Happy Belated Birthday!

My church usually does mother Day's Breakfast where the men cook and serve the food. I was too busy in the ER. Well on the way home, a church member called to say they will make plates for my whole family. My husband stopped by and picked it up. At least breakfast was taken care of.

Did the Flat Out 5k today in 31:05, good enough (just barely!) to qualify for a specific wave at the Bolder Boulder 10k in a two weeks.  More importantly, it's a PR, and I did it on my 32nd birthday, post two children. I feel AWESOME. My previous best time was in 2008 (33:13, and that was before kids!).

yay! speedy!

So just let everyone else I took the week off to recover. My hip is or my quad is bothering me  so figured give my body a bit of rest before I really pic up my training. Well today was spin class and it bothered me again! Not sure what I did or how to make it better. I going to try to use the foam roller see if it will help. I have 42 more days untill my first tri, I just really want to make it!!!!!!!!!!

Hope all you moms had a Happy Mother's Day. Laughing

IT Band is feeling better. Rest and roll. Went for an easy 3.5mi run yesterday around the lake. At about 2mi in I developed a nice rub on my foot (didn't wear socks). I took off my shoes and ran the rest unshod. I'm not a barefooter but it was a fun time going slower and feeling the mud, dirt, rocks, and roots.

Last week I felt like my swim was getting worse, only being able to do sets of 500yds, but today I used the catch-up drill and swam ascending sets of 500, 600, then 700yds. Focused on taking my time to set up the stroke and not rushing through it. Feeling better about my swim, but more work is needed.

PS - My kids went swimming in the lake yesterday, but I'm going to wait a few more weeks. BRRRRRRRRRRR!!!

So I am feeling pretty down today. I took last week off because I got an ear infection and hurt my hip! I figure my ear thing is from all the swimming and not to sure where this hip thing came from. So I rested all week even although it was very hard to do! I took a spin class yesterday and my hip was acting up the whole time!!!!!! SO I went home and looked up my symptoms and pretty sure its a hip flexor issue. This is my first tri and its at the end of JUNE!!!! So I am soo worried I wont make it after everything I have doneFrown I am also wondering if it could be from my bike,  I just got my clips and I was fitted and adjusted so that it should be a good fit! Do you think it could be from that? I am making an appt with the ortho today and pray it will not be the be what I dont want to hear! any adv or thoughts??????

Oh Yes I found them had well over 70 people. I had a great fast ride with them and was ready to rest after lol. I am feeling it now worked all night and back at it already but wanting to head to the Gym to get a swim today will need to see if I can stay awake for it.

The hospital put a temporary cast until tomorrow when I see an ortho tomorrow before putting on the permanent cast.

The hospital referred me to two ortho practices. One practice I looked up and didn't like them. The other practice i have visted once. They couldn't see me until Thursday. I called the ortho I saw 2 years ago for a knee injury. A friend had recommended her at the time and I just went, didn't even check her out but she was good and I liked her. Turns out she is the head orth specialist for the Baltimore Ravens football team for the last 14 years or so.

She squeezed me in yesterday. My husband liked her because she gave me all my options, pros and cons and explained everything in details. My ankle is broken in 2 major places, inside and outside, with some floating bone. Recovery is the same with or without surgery but its a matter of how it will heal. without surgery it will heal and in the short term it will feel fine. As I get more active walking and running, it will most likely start to cause issue because of loose bone and my gait being off. Surgery with the use of screws and a plate will put my ankle back the way it was before the accident.

Do you think I need to get a second opinion?

I am back from my long weekend away to do my 10k in Eastern Washington.  Had a GREAT time!

The race went well.  Weather was perfect.  The hills were long, but I am pleased with my time.  I am a jogger, not a runner.   I averaged 11'57" per mile even with the hills, so that is great.

Going over the top of Grand Coulee Dam was really neat.  They weren't spilling water, but it was still amazing!  Beautiful area!

Had a really good time with my friend, too.  We spent the rest of the long weekend at her place.  She has horses, so we went on a horseback ride on Sunday.  Beautiful views out over the valley, just so gorgeous!

Now we are home again, and boy, are our dogs glad to see us!

To be able to see a REAL sports medicine doc is a luxury!! I think it's always good to get a second opinion, yes. But this person expects you to continue to workout, so she's less likely to recommend something for 'the average person'. She deals with athletes, which is what you are.

I think that everything you are doing is "new" so you will have adjustments and some pain. Taking time off is critical. You could have hip flexor or psoas trouble...or both, which is common. I have a ball, the size of a softball, but kind of like a little volleyball, that I put next to my hip, as I lay on my stomach. I try to place it between my belly button and my hip. Then I move it down towards my groin and lay on it. THEN after about 20 to 30 seconds I do the other side. My husbands PT gave me the ball. It keeps my psoas loose and helps keep my hip flexors from twinging... does that make sense? I get a real twinge. It's from sitting too much, and running a bit to 'bent over'. Mostly sitting. Anyway, some kind of ball that's bigger than a tennis ball and not too firm should help. Lot's of stretching while on the tummy. It's so easy to pull those little muscles and it 's a tough spot to massage and stretch.

When you get clips, you PULL for the first time. Now that you are pulling your pedals UP you are using those muscles. Take it easy.
