I live really close to the Boston course, so I try to make my long runs coincide with the training programs', which are mostly Saturday.  I love to feed off the energy!  Someday I will do another outright marathon...at least it would be easier gearwise for a while.  Do those of you that do marathons regularly do so because you are more runners, or you find it to be good for training?  Just curious how it impacts your tri training.

It's the only thing I'm halfway decent at

Pretty much what BernardDogs said, I'm a lifelong runner who is relatively new to triathlon. I usually do a marathon after tri season ends though, and not in the spring. It's going to be a bit of a challenge with Boston and IMLP, but I will not run as much as normal and will do Boston more for fun than time. Placid is my first IM so that's the real focus for training this year. I will be using that the good running base from training for Boston to allow me to do more bike/swim focused training from the end of April through July. Or so says my coach.

eta: Of all the 3 tri sports, I enjoy running the most. Bike is close behind, and I swim because I have to.

I hear you on the swim.  I get through it, and it is sort of fun, but such a small part of the overall time that I won't focus on it.  I was always a runner and cyclist, enjoying the bike the most.  Actually got out this morning in; a bit cold, with a dusting of snow, but still was nice to be on a real bike!  I did the Chicago marathon many moons ago, and someday will likely make a Boston go of it, but tri is just fine for me right now!

Hope everyone who is on the Fink plan had a great week!  On rest day, does everyone do NOTHING?  I am thinking about a small core strength workout...

I've ran 5 marathons.  My last one was in 2008.  I hit my ultimate time goal...and vowed to retire from 26.2.  My wife laughed when I said I was going to do IMLP.  She said, "I thought you were done running marathons."  I said..."I am. Totally not a marathon...duh."

I think the marathons did help out my tri training...it's nice to have your "go to" sport last.  I've never had to worry about falling apart on the run.  But on the other hand...I think you have to give up wanting to be the BEST RUNNER you can be if you want to be the BEST TRIATHLETE you can be.

Does anyone have an opinion on or experience with Spinervals, specifically the LP one?  I was thinking about using these or just Movies while riding on the trainer. I am using the Fink Plan.

I don't count core as training, it's just something I do for 15 minutes 4x a week. Roll out of bed and bang it out before I am awake enough to think about it.

Tomorrow is a rest day for me. For sure I need a break, but I think it's back into the pool, even if I only do 10 laps. Actually, after 4 months I'd be happy with 500m. I just need to get going, and I need to see how my wrists feel afterwards.

The LP spinerval is OK.  Not bad to watch occasionally to keep the course in mind.  I save it for the occasional "long" trainer ride and really get myself up for riding the "course"...the music stinks.  So consider making your own playlist.

Personally, I like to watch something fast paced.  I'm partial to watching the TV series 24 (even though it's such a hokey show).  I can crank out two episodes like it's nothing.

Has there been any thought to coordinating a training week/weekend at LP?  I know the program that I'm working with offers one at a crazy expensive price $640 PLUS $179/night for lodging.  I'm looking to see if there's a small group meeting up there on a long weekend to ride the course, and run one loop.  Something like that... (Trying to plan out the vacation days for the summer).

Todd, living only a couple hours away I'll be up there at least once a month.  So we can make something work.

I know I'll be up there 5/18-19 for the camp I'm attending.

I'm accross the lake in Vermont and would be willing to meet up for a ride at some spot on the out/back section prior to climbing up to Wilmington. I would just need to coordinate the meeting time with the ferry ride over that I'd take.

The training weekend you quoted seems $.  My buddy sent me a couple options when i first did it in 2010 but instead i decided to train solo or with my regular cycling buddies (personal preference).  The bike loop is very easy to follow and so is the run.  The swim even easier.  I tend to hit up LP twice before the race day - mainly cause i love it up there and my wife and i like to camp.  There are plenty of inexpensive accomodations (Hotels and Lodges too).

Seems that you have a couple options of people to meet up with too.

Good luck...   Knowing the course (esp bike) is key to a sucessful (or at least - non killer) day.  The climb towards LP is not steep, just long and draining.  Riding it a few times and understanding it will help massively.

Fink plan week 1 total:  1:10 swim for 2500m, 1:45 bike, 2:30 run so I'm under/under/over.

BTW, any swell at all at the swim?  I did IMFL last year the swell was okay for me while some called it the worst in the race's history.  I signed up for IMLP as an insurance in case of a DNF for IMFL.  Well I finished IMFL.  Compared to week 1 for IMFL, week 1 for IMLP was much easier physically and much harder mentally.

BernardDogs - 2013-01-05 12:51 PM

Okay freaks ... how did week one go for those of you on a 30 week plan?

I managed 3.5 hours on the bike, 2h 20m for the run, and just over an hour in the water (3000 yds).
While I completed all that was scheduled by Fink, I'll be slightly ahead of those numbers now that my winter break is ending and I'll be back on my regular schedule.

Onward!!

Thanks for the info/offers to meet up. I will post far in advance the when and where as the days get closer. Most likely end of May through late June (Less the Rev3 and Pat Griskus). Good luck with all the training between now and then!!

Yay, I'm back in the water people! 500m of something resembling freestyle. And a slow 5k afterwards. What's weird is that I expected to have pain in my arms and wrists, and they are popping a lot but OK, but my neck is stiff!

I am easing into the swims:  30 and 40 min last week, 45 today.  Pushed it harder today; basically as fast as I can while holding form.  The kickboard is my enemy.  I am willing to push harder in swims and bike relative to running; I fear injuries from running.

Healthy training, all!

Thanks for the info.  I might buy it later, will probably just listen to tunes and watch the tube for these shorter indoor rides.

Good morning party people!

If it's Wednesday that means Uncle Finkster wants a brick. I had a 45 minute Threshold spin with TrainerRoad (Thunderbolt) and then a nice run on my 5 mile loop. Feeling good!

It looks like we'll be getting a thaw up here over the next few days ... which means black ice sidewalk season will soon be upon me. AKA Big Falls season.

Swell at the swim? In Lake Placid? They call it mirror lake for a reason...and it is true to its name right up until about 2,250 nutbags get in the water and start ripping it up. Best swim ever!

Stay upright B-dog!  I just got the Sufferfest videos...haven't watched them yet...but looking forward to it!

Had a SWEEEEEET day in northern Illinois.  Got out for an hour run through the woods in shorts...felt great.  I've got 2 more weeks on the EN Outseason plan until I hit my first legit week of IM training.  My power is climbing...and I like it.  Hoping for a short winter to get back on the roads.
