Veteran 501 Seattle, Washington | Subject: RE: Scott and Kelly's Mentor Group- Closed I like the idea of a monthly check in. That made me actually look at my numbers for January (other than the run ones) Swim: 3 hours - 8650 yds Bike - 15.25 hours - 250 miles Run - 15.5 hours - 105 miles I guess it's time to actually start swimming again, shoot. And biking, I've been slacking in that department this past month. Focused IM training starts next Monday. Started off February with a 25k race yesterday. Except I ran it as an easy long run as my 10 mile run two weeks ago was my longest in nearly a year. Felt great actually, I ran without a watch, conversational pace the whole and my running partner told me we averaged just over 9/mile! Which is super exciting and I was so surprised. I figured I would run over 10/mile pace. If only my Broncos hadn't gotten steam rollered last night it would have been a perfect weekend! |

Veteran 580 | Subject: RE: Scott and Kelly's Mentor Group- Closed Originally posted by Brendab Chris, My next Tri isn't until September and that's a sprint. Even though I don't have a tri in the near future, I don't want to give up the biking and swimming. I do have 2 half marathons coming up in March & April. Did an 8.5 mi run today and felt great.....could have done a half today. That's one of my tests when I'm doing my longer runs - I ask myself "could you do your half today?" Today was definitely yes. I felt so good that I went with one of my running buddies to a boot camp class immediately afterwards. Turned out to be a great class because we did a lot of core. When you listed your runs I didn't really understand the 2:10?? etc. Please explain. Thanks, Brenda Scott is sort of right...the 2:10 was total time and for 1:40 of the time, it was a relatively slow pace...I was sweating but could chat if I needed to and the last 30 was considerably faster. The purpose in going harder for the last bit was to exert effort when legs are tired. If you have a good base and want to beat a previous time for a half marathon, pushing it for the last bit of a long and relatively slow run may be worth considering while incorporating two runs (tempo or intervals) for the other part of the week. If you don't have a lot of running miles, then I would caution against doing a lot of speed work, as this could risk injury. For whatever it is worth, I think I only did one or two long runs of about 13 miles or so before my half, so be cautious when considering going long too soon before your race. Agree with Scott- always a good idea to ride as often as you can (2-3x per week) as this will help with overall conditioning. |

Re: half marathon plans, I only have 2 years of running experience by I found quickly that I run better in my workouts if I keep it to no more than 3-4 days per week. Generally while tri training I'll do one day short 3-5 miles speed, one day at race goal pace 5-6 miles and one day long at slow easy pace with occasional walking and stretching if needed 8-13 miles. I always keep cycling and swimming as it provides a great active recovery. I have a very sedentary job and do some kind of workout almost every day just because I feel like I benefit from moving. January totals: Swim - 31,500 yds Bike - 343 miles Run - 76 miles about 40 hours total. I didn't do the strength training I had planned. I just have a hard time getting into it. I'd love some suggestions on a short easy strength training session I can work into my routine. |

243 Lincoln, Nebraska | Subject: RE: Scott and Kelly's Mentor Group- Closed Monthly check in? Oh no. This means I need to figure out what I have run, biked, swum? Hmm... this might take awhile to add up in my head (this is where most of my training is kept). Bike: 131.6 miles (actually more than this, but I didn't track the miles in 2xSpin classes, otherwise more like 150 miles I'd guess). Run: 24 miles? Totally guessing here. Swim: 4,025 M (or more, that's just what I happened to record) I have no idea what any of this means other than I guess I should record this better? I've actually gotten a Garmin Swim watch, so Swims are being recorded now, and all rides on the bike trainer are automatically recorded. Treadmill runs I don't record, so there in lies a problem. |

It was a fun one to do to work on speed and endurance at the same time. :15 rest on the ez, :25 on the fast ones. Could modify the set however needed by distance, total # of 100's, etc. It was a good set for me b/c I tend to swim my 1000+ swims at a pace that I could swim for hours (I do this in running, too). My coach says I need to step it up on the 1000 yard swim and should actually feel tired at the end of those. (Actually, all my swim workouts are fun. Even the straight long distance ones. But I thought this set was fun for tri purposes.) |

Don't mind doing sprints running or on the bike until I puke - but the thought of getting in the water is so unmotivating for me. As for Sam - thanks for asking - She is coming home from the hospital today. She lots better and is no longer passing out. The oncologist thinks that it is 99% unlikely that it is leukemia. Wow...did not see that coming and we won't know until next week for sure. They still don't know what she has and are waiting for the results from other tests to come back. |

I never have much of an issue starting in the back. It gives you lots of mini drafts to work off of until you find someone to settle in on, or you can just hop from feet to feet.
And no Chris it's not water, it's a dirty, nasty marina. |

I could really use a nap about now. Laughing I have the same thing on Friday but 900s. I dread this part of the week....the days that lead up to Friday. I have to do the paddle with the Finis Agility Paddles and they are harder than the PT paddles. I have to break up the set because there is no fng way I could sustain a 900 with those fng things. Did I mention I hate those fng things? |

Especially right now with my chicken wing arms, so slow! Tough workout!! For you they probably would not be difficult. You are a very strong swimmer. I, on the other hand, suck. They are not like normal paddles. They are designed to help teach proper early vertical forearm and feel for the water. So, when I do them, my arm often crosses over, my body often contorts, they might fall off when my hand enters the water etc...unless I use proper form. They have nothing to do with strength. |
