Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Summer Group-CLOSED Jeremy-I think you could do it either way in calculating run/bike HR. I think the main thing is to just be consistent with the numbers/zones you use. Nice weekend of training.....how did you like the tether in the pool. Hard to believe another weekend is done. Shortish swim at lunch then strength and short run this evening. Hope everyone has a great week. |

The one thing I haven't been able to turn off is the hunger engine; I'm still eating like I'm training 12 hours/week. Oh, well...I'll be back at it soon enough. |

I love the tether in the pool Its so easy get the suit on and swim I have only done 2 sessions of 15 mins I am dreaming up more timed interval stuff to get better workouts. I am using my Garmin 910 as well I don't get distance or pace but I do get stroke count so that helps as well. |

I am not a heart rate training guy so I have had very little to add as far as advice in setting up heart rate zones. I hate looking at my heart rate, especially when I am really pushing hard intervals. When I see how high my heart rate is my brain starts to second guess whether I can maintain that heart rate. Then I'm having a debate with myself about pushing harder or backing off. I tape over the heart rate part of the display or set it up so HR isn't showing for hard training. On other fronts, I moved up one spot in the overall. Apparently the guy that they had as the overall winner they thought had started in a later wave so they had his time calculated wrong. Up to 5th Now I'm only the fourth loser....... |

Veteran 976 New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Summer Group-CLOSED Weekends go by too quick! Got an OK 30 mile ride in Saturday morning and a 5 mile run last night. The ride was at 5 AM and, after thinking about, only about 8 hours after I ended my previous 5 mile run, so I was just kind of blah. I wanted to use it as a test for my Oly coming up this weekend to see what I could expect for pace but hopefully it's more of a worse case at least I can put out X even feeling like crap. I did get to fine tune how much nutrition I want to take in though. Eating always makes me feel better. I have a strong stomach and I've worked out a good combination of some Shot Blocks, Gatorade, water and stinger waffle. I constantly under do-it on nutrition during a race so I'll hopefully change that. I just have to remember to fuel for the next 30 minutes, not the last one. Best news of the weekend is I said screw it and went out and bought a riding lawn mower. We have 2 acres and push mowing it was taking me about 3 hours. Father in law was over on Saturday and he has a truck so we just went and picked one up. So long over due. What a life saver. 45 minutes and done and that was with learning to drive it properly. |

Jason - You too - but we expect that of you now Aw Mike, that sucks about the crash but WOW way to come back and crush the ride at 3:06!? Jon enjoy your new law toy!! This weekend was great - low key and not too much responsible adult stuff to do so it was mostly play. And my training has really started to ramp up. Saturday I went out for 2 rides (testing saddles) and totaled 32 miles on the day. Sunday was a 10 mile run (EEK) and a 20 mile ride to rest another saddle. Needles to say my sit bones are a little hurty today. I have 1 more saddle to try. I swear I'm going to write a 4 page saddle review. Out of all of them I can say I hate the Cobb Flow Max the most - had to go back home after 6 miles LOL. Then right after that made it 20 with the Adamo Prologue. Yesterday was the Adamo Breakaway. I think I liked the Prologue better (softer) and today is the Adamo Road (about an inch shorter). Today I'm sleepy but it's rainy but because I have a bunch of orange is the new black episodes to get through, I'm surprisingly looking foward to the trainer tonight. HUH. Go figure Have a good night all. Off to read some RRs. |

504 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Summer Group-CLOSED Financial worries are killing me right now. Luckily my race tomorrow (5K trail) is only 5 dollars. 1 mile OWS yesterday with just jammers. I "raced" an elderly couple who was walking along the shore. They crushed me. Going to shake out the legs for about 30 mins tonight on the TM and then an hour on the trainer. I didn't reach my self imposed goals last week. Family and work have been ruining my schedule. This week I'm ramping. No runs under 30 mins, no rides under 1 hour, no swims under 1 mile. If the pool doesn't open up soon, I'm going to measure out my swimming hole to figure out how to do 25 or 50 yd laps. |

I rode on Saturday, and Swam today. Was gonna run this morning, but unfortunately, Mother Nature wanted to put on a light show this morning, resulting in no safe to run conditions.

New user 234 New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Summer Group-CLOSED Nice job this weekend Mike, Nathan, Steve, and Jason! Hopefully I didn't miss anyone. It was a tough day for the Sprocket. Did a little warm up run before my race on Sunday and could tell the lower ab/groin strain was still a little tender but not too bad. So waiting for my wave to start I only had my wetsuit up to my waist. About 10 minutes before my start time I pull up the top half and rip! I put a good couple inch tear in the forearm of my brand new worn less than a half dozen times not inexpensive freaking wetsuit. Ok, no big deal, shake it off, we will deal with it later, just go swim. Had a pretty good swim, fairly clean transition and I'm off on the bike. Decided to go with the roadie seeing how I'm still a lot more comfortable on it. You would think the old girl would be happy I decided to take her to the dance. Nope. Three miles in and pop there goes the rear tire! Of course it has to be the rear. Ok, no sweat I've changed tubes out a bunch of times. Well sitting on my couch, with a floor pump, and a heart rate of about 60 bpm I have anyway. Come to find out it's a little different standing on the side of the road, gasping for air with all kinds of triathletes buzzing by you. I got the wheel off, old tube out, and attempted to put the new tube in. Fumbled with it for a bit and then remembered I needed to put a little air in the tube so it would go in easier. For the life of me I couldn't get the air to go in with that stupid little obviously defective from the factory pump. As I was in the midst of my Thunderdome life and death battle with the midget pump the SAG wagon mercifully showed up. My knight in shining armor leaps from his trusted steed with floor pump in hand and comes to my rescue. I proceed to blame this stupid pint sized contraption for my current predicament. Being a man and all I would have been well under way by now if not for the devil pump still hanging off the valve. He kindly says here let me take care of the rest for you. I graciously accept his offer and step back in order to stay out of his way. He removes the little minion pump sent by Hades, and unscrews the valve on top of the stem! Doh! You you forgot to unscrew the Presta valve! No wonder air wouldn't go in! We make eye contact and immediately my head drops towards the ground and I shake it back and forth. He just kind of chuckled and proceed to whip the rest of the job out in about a minute. Put the wheel back on for me and sent me on my way. All said I think I lost about 6 or 7 minutes. Hammered as hard as I could back to T2. Started out on the run at a pretty good clip but could feel the discomfort in my abs almost immediately. I probably could have pushed through it but after all the previous bad luck I figured I wouldn't chance it. I decided just to cruise it in at about an 8:45/mile pace. Hopefully, I've appeased the tri gods for 2014 and the rest of the year will be smooth sailing. |

Master 3205 ann arbor, michigan | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Summer Group-CLOSED My swim coach has me really working on kicking while swimming. I have always just kind of dragged my legs through the water. Now I am trying to do a six-beat kick with as little effort as possible. It is hard to do. It is like trying to pat your head and rub your stomach. Your brain has to make your body do two different things at once. When I am doing it I notice that I am significantly short of breath when I incorporate those big leg muscles in to swimming. Two things about that...... She wants me kicking really gently with only minimal effort and it is amazing to me what a difference even a very gently kick makes in my forward progress. Two, when I was concentrating on kicking and pulling (rubbing and patting.....) I was forgetting to exhale under water (what? I have to remember three things now? or four or five or ten things that 'swimmers' do without even thinking about) When I breathe it isn't nearly as hard. Imagine that. I have seen a couple second/100 drop in pace with gentle kicking. Just like it took awhile for me to fully incorporate flip turns in to my swimming, I believe it is going to take some real effort on my part to make kicking part of my swim technique. I think that it will be totally worth it in the long run even if it makes the here and now suffering a little more. |

Veteran 976 New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Summer Group-CLOSED Kevin - That's a rough day at the races. I'm totally with you though, there's only so much bad luck one can accumulate and it seems like you got most of it out of the way on Sunday. Jason - I know our versions of "swimming" are different, but I too noticed way too much leg drag and not enough (any for me) kick. I just started a consistent light kick and it's really been great. I really need to video my swim or take a few lessons to make sure I'm doing things right, but I definitely noticed a drop in time. I think I'm still in that stage where everything isn't totally committed to muscle memory so when I make small changes I can pick up on them. Now to change 1/2 of a degree of my golf swing will take me 6 months and I'll come back the next spring and all changes will be gone. |

Did anyone happen to catch the Red Bull Wings of life Global Run it was on NBC SC last night it a awesome concept There were 34 different locations with 48000 runners starting They all started at the same time and 30 mins later a catch car started to chase them at different paces for different durations of time. some guys made it over 4 hours running over 40 miles before they were caught it was a cool race. Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Summer Group-CLOSED Kevin-hope that you got all of your bad luck out of the way for the season. Good job finishing after going through all of that. Jason-I'm a light two beat kicker. The few times I have tried to do a gentle flutter kick I have ended up short of breath. More power to you in working to change things. Especially with swimming it seems things are one step forward and two steps back. I have a hard time sticking with technique changes...I always seem to revert to what I have done for hundreds of thousands of yards when I am doing a hard set instead of sticking with the change and looking more long term. |

Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Summer Group-CLOSED OK gang, here is a little hypothetical. Lets say you just won $1500 and you HAD to spend it on something tri related....no grief from the spouse or significant other, no guilt that you should use the money on something else....it has to go toward something tri related. What would you buy or use the money for? Coach, power meter, race wheels, travel/entry fees, new bike/frame/components etc.......? Curious what everyone has at the top of their "wish" list. I'm a bit embarassed to say that I have accumulated almost all of the goodies over the 5 years I have been doing this so I will hold off on my response until I can give it some thought. |

It would definitely go towards a bike and I'd make up the rest. That's #1 on my list for sure. If in our hypothetical game I couldn't put any more money towards the $1500 chances are I couldn't get a bike so I'd go for a combo of stuff like a power meter, Garmin 910 and some different lenses for my Oakleys. |

I would say Travel and Race Fees I would knock off some bucket list races (Wildflower, IM MT. Treblant) I love my bike Cannondale Slice 3 Full Ultegra and all Carbon Vision Cranks, just purchases a Flo 60/90 wheel set, I have all the other gear. So racing and travel would be it. Most Definitely a new bike. Even if it's not New, New... but new to me. I would love to have an actual tri bike and not just a roadie with clip-on bars. Second option would be to finish outfitting my roadie with an Idamo saddle, HED3 Race Wheels, a Cyclo-ops trainer, and probably add a Stages power meter and an Xterra Wetsuit... oh the possibilities! |

A decent tri-bike frameset (I have all the other components ready to go for a build-out, then ran out of money while shopping for said frameset ), and some sort of Flo wheelset configuration depending on how much money is left. I'd love to do the power meter thing if I could swing a cheap used PT and build up a Flo 30 rear/disc cover set up. I'm really good at spending theoretical money. :-) |

I would actually start with a towing bar for my car and a bike carrier to attach to said towing bar... I struggle to trust my bike to my strap on bike carrier, and I'm finding more and more opportunities to ride away from home. I want a secure solution... And then, Some coaching... As much as I could get with the remaining $1,000 - $1,200. |
