tri-dg - 2008-02-28 12:39 PM I have a pair of orca tri shorts and just bought a desoto Tri suit the other week. both fit well.. i havent worn either for a 4 hour ride yet though... nutrition - i get the just of nutrition... around 200 cal per hour. i have been triaing on full - mid full stomach and sometimes eating a Protiene bar while im working out... i figure it will keep me used to eating - or goos and drinking ill prob use the goo, pt bar, and acceloraide on the bike. Tri Bike... I wish i had 2-3k to spend on a tri bike. but as for now im using my trec 1500 w aero bars. if I could find a nice used one or on clearence i would think about getting one. also depends on how much i get back on taxes as well as my sales for the next few months.

You are fine on the trek so long as it properly fits you.  I did my first HIM on my entry level road bike.

You will want to start experimenting early with nutrition on your long rides and runs.  It is easy to go out right now and do a 90 minute ride without worrying about eating.  This won't be the case for your HIM.  I typically consume between 270-320 calories per hour.  This will vary from person to person.  And the type of nutrition varies.  Some people can't eat powerbars or gels.  Their stomach reacts adversely too it.  As you building your mileage start playing around.

And for more reference, read my race reports from my 2 HIMs.  The first one, I was clueless about nutrition.  The second one I was dialed in but still a bit short.  The difference?  The ability to run the half marathon competitively.

I know it is cheesy but I came across this quote earlier.  I thought it was fitting for the time....

"It 'aint about how hard you can hit.... it's about how hard you can get hit and
keep moving forward.  How much you can take and keep moving forward.  That's
how winning is done..."

Nice! I like that.  It's applicable in so many ways.  I know there have been marathons where I just wanted to quit, but I kept moving forward.  I figured what was the difference in one more hour of feeling bad, and at least at the end I'd have a medal

Or in my current situation, it's hard to keep pushing forward when I have no idea what I'm up against.  But the only way I'm going to win is just to keep working on my goals, and things will shake out how they may.

Well played Sarah.  The key in this sport, or life in general, is that you never know unless you push yourself and find out what you are really capable of.

This weekend I will let you all in on a few more details of my newest decision.  It has just taken a bit longer than anticipated.

today i pulled off an 1.89 avg 100 meeter swim....it was for a 1025 meeters. DANG thats my fastest I have ever had... even with 50 kick and 50 pull... I was planing on only doing a 800 but at the time i was at i added the 125 and 100 in to the ladder and only went over my time by 2min 22 sec.

I went threw my work out and did the times as a 2.2 min per 100. avg to see how many meeters i should do. I may need to go back threw and do it at 2 min avg.

any one have any thoughts? This was even after lifting Biceps and triceps

Drew, does your pool have a pace clock?  That's how I pace through my workouts.   My old coach used to have us swim a 200 on cruise...essentially a pace where you're not working too hard, but not coasting either.  Based on that pace, we individually adjust our workouts from there.

Hey guys! Didn't make the Evotri spot, but it's all good. Thanks for your help!! I've been working with a nutritionist and focusing on good eating, really getting rid of processed stuff. I think I'm down about 2 lbs since Tuesday, hooray!

Drew - I'm not good at swimming tips, since lately I'm just trying to stay afloat But I'm sure I can learn from everyone else's suggestions.

I've got 2 questions -

1 - My training has been spotty the last 2 months, I've gotten in all of the sports, but with being sick, have only managed them 1-2 times per week rather than the schedule. My plan is to stick to March to a 'T', as well as April. Will this get me to the finish line? I should mention that I did have a marathon running base, but man, I'm trying to find where I put that lately . I should also mention that I did zero training on swim and bike for my first 3 sprint tris last season (I know, I know, I just wanted to see what it was like).  I did finish, but I know I'm capable of so much more!

2 - I've got my March planned training all set up in the planned calendar. What days do you think would best work to incorporate strength training? This training plan does incorporate a rest day on Tuesdays. (Our tri club coach put this schedule together for us, it's a 'To Finish' schedule).

Sarah, sorry you didn't make the team.  You definitely gave them a run for their money though!!  You should be proud of all of your accomplishments.

I'm in the same boat as you training-wise.  February was a terrible month for me and my marathon is less than 2 months out.  I'll be hitting the pavement a lot this month!

Ok....I am playing a bit of catch up on some of the questions.  It was sunny and 70 here all weekend.  As you might imagine, I was NOT sitting at the computer:

Drew--great job with the swim.  Given your strength, you should be able to power through the water at a rapid rate.  What you need to start focusing on is finding that mix between speed and endurance.  For example, if you can do 50m in 50s but 100m takes you 110s then you have an endurance issue and need to build longer sets.  Keep in mind that you want to think about your form.  When does it break down....50? 75? 100?  Identifying this weekness if

Sarah--I think you are in great shape for St. A's.  We need to get you on the bike more and build a stronger base but if you had to do it today, I think you could fight your way through it (albeit hurting, lol).  You swim volume looks pretty good.  We need to up that this month.  Your run is the least of my worries, just need you to get back on track.  What are you most concerned about????

Kendra--We need to get you back on track.  What do you need from us to get there?

John & Lynne....what's shakin?  Let's do an early month check-in to see where everyone's mental status is.

 -----------

Me---I feel behind on the bike.  My swim volume is low but that isn't troublesome to me right now.  My running base is solid and will serve me well in April May.  My biggest concern is getting my bike fitness up to speed.  It has been my personal experience that my bike fitness comes back quickly.  From there I need to work on speed.  I don't think I will be 100% ready for my April race but I should be close.  I will be better prepared for the run portion which is where I struggle most.

Uh, how about a swift kick in the pants?  Embarassed

My plan is to get back on track this week.  Starting today.  I have to write an exam, then I'm going to hit the pavement for as long as my body will let me.  Went skiing and to a concert last night, so my legs are a bit tired, but I figure it will be good for me.

I think I'm most concerned about the swim, I've never done an ocean swim and while I can swim the distance, my endurance isn't there, I usually have to stop every 50 because of the breathing.  I feel like my legs and arms could go forever, but I don't have the breathing under control yet.

Otherwise, I think I just need to follow the training plan and I'll be ok.  I'm going to be riding Wed/Fri after work at SCT and then a longer ride on Sundays.  Hooray for Spring Forward!

Another 10 lbs dropped would help too! (I'm down 2 so far!

ELLLOO!!!!

I did a 10K trail run on saturday with a couple of BT'ers.  I did this run back in November! It's not too far from my house and the park sits right at the end of Seatac! Loads of planes flying over etc. Well last time I showed up late and didn't hear the course briefing and ended up running 8 miles instead of 6.  This time I only did 4 1/2 because yet again I took a wrong turn.  Most confusing.  I think this coming weekend I'll go back there by myself and try for another 6 miles. I love running trails SO MUCH!!!

I decided on 2 races too and just added them.   Also I'm coaching two of my friends through their 1st tri this coming August.

I'm starting t get ready to head back to Scotland in a few weeks.  But I'm still sticking to my Oly plan.  This week is recovery week.  Phew.

New week!  Let's all get back on track this week!!!

I have another brutal week ahead...if I can survive and get in all the workouts, I will be thrilled!!!!!!

Mon: AM yoga/swim 4000
Tues: AM light spin /track workout
Wed: 3000y am swim / 3 mile run with strength
Th: 50 minute tempo/ 2500y swim
Fri: 90' bike (if weather cooperates)
Sat: 2 hr run
Sun: 3 hr bike (focus on nutrition)

 ----------------

On a positive note, next week is day lights savings!!!!  We all get an extra hour at the end of the day.  This typically kicks off official tri-training.  Let's make it happen!!!

Sarah, that sounds like a deal to me!

Here are my goals for the week:

  • Monday - Rest day
  • Tuesday - 70 min run
  • Wednesday - 30 min run
  • Thursday - 1 hr 35 min run
  • Friday - Rest day
  • Saturday - 2 hr 40 min run
  • Sunday - 45 min run or the Master's GS race at the mountain

Granted this is all off my planned schedule, but I have a feeling my endurance might have dropped a bit from not running, so I may have to adjust a little.

Thata girl.  If you feel fatigued and run down this week try to alter your minutes instead of dropping the entire workout.  It is a lot better to do three 30 minute runs than a 45 and 30 over the week.  Plus it adds an extra layer of accountability.

Day 1 of my accountability...I am going to hit the treadmill after work today.  I even packed the gym clothes so that I cannot go home and see my oh so comfy and tempting couch.
