gygyhawk - 2008-01-03 7:16 PM okay, I threw caution to the wind tonight and signed up for a Sprint tri on 3/29 (500 M swim, 11 mi. bike, 3 mi. run).  The thought of waiting until August was bringing my motivation down.  So now I'm wondering if I should change over to the 13 week original sprint plan.  I was doing the 20 week now, at at week 12 of the current plan I won't be up to the distances for the race.  Hubby got brave too and wanted in, it will be his first tri and he is not even working out consistently now.  I was hoping maybe we could do the same plan, he can just add in breaks where needed.  What is the consensus?

go for it!  listen to your body durning training and have fun!

Cashmason - 2008-01-03 10:15 PM Half marathon this coming Sunday. Prediction for race time is showers, mid 40's temp 12 mph winds. It may be heavy rain, but taht is supposed to be done the night before. Should I go with long sleeve tech, short sleeve tech or sleeveless tech. Yes will be wearing a running hat. I know I can't stay dry, but want to try to stay as warm as possible.

Yeah, I so don't have any advice for you on this... run?  in the cold?  Huh, interesting .  HOWEVER, the good news is that my partner in crime, Sal, lives someplace where pretty much every run he does is, in fact, in the cold and should have some sage advice on wardrobe and accessories...

what about layers?  you can always take stuff off during the race but you can't throw stuff on.

trash bags work great pre-race, ditch at the start!

oh yeah, good luck!

Yay GyGy!  That's great!  Most sprint tri programs are about 12 weeks anyways.  What you might be able to do is continue your 20-week program with the end date on 3/29.  Just start at the training plan that corresponds with today.

I think 3 months is MORE than enough time to train for your first tri.  Remember not to stress out too much about your 1st tri.  Make it an enjoyable experience.  Any time you post will be a personal best

I agree with Sal... you have plenty of time and can back the plan out from the race date You'll be fine!  Don't stress about the swim... just try to get to the pool consistently.  Good on your husband for catching the tri bug.

You're right.  If it's raining, you won't stay dry, but as long as you stick with tech wicking material, you won't be sopping wet.  No cotton!  Personally, I typically run a little warmer in rain.  At 40 degrees and rain, I personally would go with an Underarmour type undervest and a long sleeve tech shirt.  The vest will keep your core body temp elevated (running in low temps and rain can lead to mild hypothermia, kind of like swimming in very cool water for extended time) and the heat from having both the vest and long sleeve layer will help 'evaporate' the moisture in your clothes.  You'll have fun watching the steam come off your body .  You'll be the human flame .

Good luck this weekend.  Split up your half into 3 parts.  1st 5, next 5, last 3.1.  Remember to start out slow the 1st 5 and keep that heart rate in check, the 2nd 5 should be mildy uncomfortable, then if you still feel good that last 3, give it your all!

x2 on the trash bags.  Also get yourself some cheap gloves, you know the $1 variety.  Cotton's o.k. here.  When your hands warm up during the race, you can ditch them without feeling bad.  Beats having to carry a $14 pair of tech gloves tucked into the waistband of your shorts the rest of the race and worrying about losing them...

Good luck this weekend.  Split up your half into 3 parts.  1st 10, next 10, last 3.1.  Remember to start out slow the 1st 10 and keep that heart rate in check, the 2nd 10 should be mildy uncomfortable, then if you still feel good that last 3, give it your all!

Ok -- Maybe my math is funny but since when does 10+10+3.1 = 13.1 or half Mary????     Math was never my strong suit, but.....  Am I missing some important concept here?

x3 on the trash bags and ditto on the gloves!  You can get those brown cotton jersey gloves almost anywear for about a buck 29 a pair...  Easy to get rid of if you start to get warm.   Also -- be sure you have at least a ball cap or running hat if not a stocking cap for your head.  We lose most of our body heat through our head.

Ya I figured he meant 5 miles, second 5 miles and final 5k.

I guess OSH here I come tomorrow for the gloves.

Don't have an underarmor type skin or vest. Do have a long sleeve skin, but havent worn it yet and I wont use anything in a race I haven't trained with. Plus long sleeve skin with short over top seems not bright.

How can I layer. If I get hot, am I gonna dump my tech shirts? Not me. Now I will ditch a garbage bag.

O.K., you got me, but I went back and disposed of the evidence.  Funny...I have a tech degree, and still can't add when I'm tired...

Well, apparently sleeping the ENTIRE flight from Midway to MSP has caused me to be wide awake.

Ok, since you guys are up too (no good) hows about a little guidance here.

A. I've been REALLY clumsy lately during workouts including the multi-hour hike I did over NY's where I kept dropping things. It only seems to happen when my HR is really high...my bf said I was dehydrated?

B. Numb feet during spin class, would bike shoes be more appropriate to clip in??

C. My Polar F11 is dying. Rather than replace the battery and strap and thingy, I want a new one, any suggestions? (I really like to swim with the hrm, garmin doesn't like that)...who want's a garmin?

D. So, what good motivational training books are you/have you read lately?

Discuss.

Hi redlv,

A. How high of a heart rate are we talking? A 2% dehydration can account for a 20% loss in performance, so clumsiness could certainly be one indicator of dehydration, it could also be an indicator of a bonk as sometimes it is hard to determine which until it is too late. Over long workouts (many hours) , a high heart rate could also be a result of cardiac drift, which is when your heart rate rises over time even at a constant/same workload.

B. Numb feet, during spin class is definitely a result of probably using rubber sole shoes? the soles of Bike shoes are generally either carbon or a harder plastic so that when you pedal, the shoe does not bend. If the shoe bends as you pedal, it results in a loss of power, and a cut of blood circulation to the foot, causing numbness!

C. I use a Garmin/HR for the bike and a Polar for the runs.

D. I am currently reading "Going Long", Great book thus far for Iron Distance training and philosophy ( Wish i had read before doing my 1/2IM's) a great book I have read in the past that I still consult quite often are the books by Chris Carmichael on endurance dieting and training and one last good read is Chi-Running . . I found it quite interesting and helped to mentally think about how I run to run better!

Have a great Day!

Cashmason - 2008-01-03 10:48 PM  How can I layer. If I get hot, am I gonna dump my tech shirts? Not me. Now I will ditch a garbage bag.

layer with a short sleeve tech first, long sleeve tech over top, then wear a garbage bag over top of that to the start.

right before they start the race, ditch the bag on the side of the road (they have volunteers to pick stuff up).

as you warm up during the race, you can peel off the long sleeve and either #1- dump it at an aid station with a volunteer, they should bring it to the finish, #2- have someone in your fan club wait about half way and give it to them , #3- ditch it an a certain mile marker and come back for it after the race, #4 - tie it around your waist.

if you are still nervous, you can wear an old long sleeve t-shirt instead of the tech wear, the important piece is the short sleeve tech that will pull moisture away from your chest and core.

and the gloves, remember the gloves
