Woo Hoo!  Welcome Everyone!!

Wow...Billy on the board at the Y?  Oh he will mandate a dress code I'm sure...topless with thongs! LOL  Glad I don't go to the Y in Mississippi! Laughing  But seriously Billy...congrats...that is way cool!!

Gary, beer sounds good but I ran tonight and I coulda had beer for a recovery drink but I'm out so guess I gotta go to the store!  Don't really like my husbands beer...too boring. LOL

Phildampier....I saw your post about IMKY.  Don't worry about a swim without the wetsuit.  I'm new to swimming and I survived the Louisville swim just fine.  Get some open water swims in this summer (of course without a wetsuit).  I also saw you are thinking about a Cervelo P2C.  Awesome bike as I just purchased one this fall.  I had a Fuji Aloha and used that for Louisville.  Then I decided to upgrade...I love love love my Cervelo!

My friend's daughter went home today because her dad did come home from the hospital.  They are gonna have a long hard road ahead but I will be here for them every step of the way.  It was nice having another girl in the house (being that I'm the only girl except for my dog).  LOL  Thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers.

Bryan hope you are better soon!!

Mav, we are getting snow tonight!!  I love it!  Sounds like you have enough to share with everyone!

Lena...how's it going?  P90X.  Are you ripped yet? LOL

Hello again everyone!

ran 5k today (tied for the furthest I have ever run, which was 20 years ago) finished 2 miles in 18:15 and 5k in 28:50. felt the calf muscle soreness all the way thru, that should pass in the next day or two and make this a bit easier.

also biked 2.5 miles a

Also stopped by the bike shop to look and research, he indicated that I would need a 54 cm. I'm 5'9" does that sound right?

nd had enough for a sprint at the end (obv wasnt working hard enough)

onward and upward!

I think it was misleading when i said it was outside of leg. I meant the pain is in one spot on outside half of achilles. Pretty sure it is my achilles tendon from the location of pain. I ruptured my other achilles 7 years ago playing basketball but since surgery have had no problems with either leg. To answer your questions I am running in new shoes (less than 40 miles of running in them), I have just started back running for a few weeks, and my mileage low. Calve strength and flexibility are not that good so I need to address this issue when healthy. I also have changed my stride from a heel strike to a midfoot strike so this could possibly have caused the injury. I will rest it for the rest of this week and get back on the bike Monday. Training for first triathlon (sprint) in June so I have time to heal. If pain persists i will schedule an appointment with sports medicine and get checked out. My weakest area by far is swimming so i can just put some extra time in at the pool. Thanks for your help!

Good morning and welcome everyone. I am actually new as well but I guess I am also very rude in that I just started posting in the forum without waiting for permission. That's just the way I roll.

Anyway, I didn't see my bio posted so I'll just give a quick run down.

My names Mark, I'm 42 single with no kids and I live outside of Houston, TX. I have been doing tris for about 6 years now. Mostly sprints. About a year ago I decided to do an Ironman. I trained last year for one in October but then ran into some injury issues and I also bought a house and found my time just wasent there. Now my new house isn't new anymore. It's just a mortgage payment and I feel injury free so I am back to focusing on the dream.

My A race is IM Texas on May 21, 2011

The only other race I have signed up for is the Half IM being held in galveston TX in early April. As the year progresses I will most likely pick up a few more races. For the time being though I want to focus on only these two.

I had a great run yesterday. I ran over 8 miles for the first time since I started having achillies issues around June of last year. I was able to finsh the run pain free which I am really stoked about. I woke up this morning a little sore but otherwise feeling pretty good. I was suppose to have a pretty solid swim this monring but I decided to take it a little easy so I could recover a bit.

I also have a bike session on the trainer this evening. I was talking to a pretty hard core biker a few days ago and he was telling me about a workout he does when forced on the trainer. It's basicly 15 minutes on the trainer then hopping off to do a set of core excersies and then push-ups, then back on the trainer for another 15 min. repeat 3 or 4 times.

It sounds pretty intense but also pretty fun. I think I will still try it out but just not push myself too hard on the bike. My legs are feeling a little ripped as they are.

Hope everyone has a great morning.

Welcome to the group!!!!
Nice 5K...congrats on returning to running.

Every bike is different. I am 5'10' and ride a medium tri frame. My bike came in s,m,l,xl. My road bke is 56 cm. It really depends on the bike. The best thing you can do is try out a few bikes. Once the shop does a few measurements they can set you up to go for a ride.

What!  That is the time that the National Guard needs to be called in!  Dang silly talk, too snowy to get beer, what has happened to this country..

Pace - welcome and congrats on the run.  +1 on what Mav said about the bike sizing.

Mark - How far is Lake Charles, LA from you?  There is a Tri series there that I have done the last two years.  Won't do the first one this year as it is the same day as my HIM.  Will probably make Race #2 or #3.

Scott - good luck, returning to running with new shoes and changing your foot strike is a tough combination.  When you do return to running I would really keep the mileage low.

Amy - glad things are better.  BTW, great idea on the dress code but since I don't have any thongs I guess I can't go to his Y.  (now there is a mental image for you!) Tongue out

With everything going on at work it is looking like a rest day for me.  Shoot, late for work.  Later!

Hey Team,

Just checking in.  Making sure I'm in the right forum..

Day off from exercise today. I've been really good with my diet this week (since Saturday night pizza and pepsi ..).  My exercise has been better than planned.  Even decided to leave the car at home and walk to the gym.  I'd like the weather to be slightly warmer, -19c w/ windchill, is a little cold.

I have a question about running.  I've researched that I shouldn't begin running until I lose some (lots) of weight in order to reduce injury.  On the other hand there is tons of research that suggests running is one of the best weight loss exercises and obviously part of triathlon training.  It seems like a Catch-22.   Should I start running training or wait for less weight?

I guess a little background info is necessary:

BMI suggests 189lbs. max.  I weighed in yesterday at 235lbs.
I had knee surgery to repair torn ACL and MCL in 2003.  Been fairly inactive since.

Anyways thanks for any input.

Glenn, I am calling BS on the not running until you lose weight.  I started at 230 and began running immediately and saw instant improvements.  Just run at a pace you can maintain and don't over do it.  Your body will tell you .  You are a triathlete, all of the reports that say dont run until you lose weight are for normal people, and we all know triathletes aren't normal.

Post a weight loss log for us to follow.

Amy, haha... no. I think the ripped part might come on round 2 or 3, i have fat to lose first But, even a month into it, I *am* seeing more definition in my arms and the lbs are coming off as planned, so hopefully, by the end of it all, I'll have something I can be proud of

Hey, Amy, did you do P90X? I noticed you have BringIt! in your siggie and thought you may have?

Glenn,

Yes, you can run at any weight.  The possibility of getting hurt are higher than someone that weights 120lbs.  Running is great for losing weight but the extra weight is hard on your knees and ankles.  Just be careful and don't try to increase your mileage too much too fast.  I wouldn't suggest speed workouts at this time but I don't see anything wrong with running to lose weight.  Just listen to you body and don't forget to stretch.

scott14 - 2011-01-19 10:38 PM Question for anyone who can help. Running on monday I felt a little pain on outside of leg right above ankle. Tried to run again today and it felt worse. I am assuming it is an achilles tendon strain. Any idea how long this usually takes to heal? Also, can I continue my other activities (bike, swim, strength training) or should I rest it completely? Pain is not that bad but I am worried about making it worse and not being able to train.

Scott,

Achilles are very tricky.  Each achilles injury is different but I would suggest not running until the pain is gone.  There is no standard rest time on an achilles.  If you have to move, try fast walking for awhile to see how the pain is.

This actually sounds like a Peroneal tendon injury.  These are the tendons that run on the outside of your ankle by the achilles.  These tendons connect the muscle to the bone.  Long distance runners and people with High arches have higher risks of having this type of injury.  If it's painful to the touch, I think you might have Peroneal Tendonitis.  In which case you will need to rest it, ice it, and possibly take an anti inflammatory.

Name: Phil Dampier
I am a teacher and coach. High School cross country and track
37 yrs old, married, no children, 1 cat, 1 dog.
I live in Quail Valley, Ca which is somewhat near riverside. Not the greatest place to live and it gets really hot here in the summer. The nice thing is its located an hour to an hour and half from almost anything you would ever want to do.
Started wrestling when I was 7 and stopped after JC. Started running local road races. I then got back into wrestling and started coaching and competing. I also started coaching cross country and track once I moved back home. Then I started racing atv's all over the western U.S.. Was dared to do a Marathon so I did it and qualified for Boston. I have done 3 marathons now. I was thinking this summer what is there that I have I always wanted to do and just couldn't for some reason. I came up with complete an Ironman, complete Dakar(two week off road race formally in Africa but now in South America), and Tour De France. Hmmm not enough money for dakar, not enough time, talent or connections for the Tour so lets try an Ironman. I know I can run and I use to bike all the time (years ago) I guess I just need to learn to swim well. So I looked for one at the end of summer since I have the summers off from teaching not coaching. Louisville was the only one open so I took the weekend to think about it and figured its destiny if its still open on monday. Sure enough it was so I signed up. I have always just done things and been good at it without a whole lot of work. This though is going to be a whole different ballgame.

So far all I have is a training plan, cheap goggles, and running stuff. Oh an entry into IMLou and a hotel.  I know I still need a bike, tri-suit and probably a million other little things I hope to learn about in here.

I am looking forward to this year of learning and experiencing new things. Also this group will hopefully give me an outlet so I am not talking my wifes ears off about this. She is also a teacher and is in a Doctrate program so she is busy too.

Hope this makes sense since i am pretty tired this morning.

Phil,

I will see you at Louisville.  Keep up the training.  I am an Ex-wrestler and cross country runner as well.  Where did you wrestle at?

Glenn,  John is a running guru...Billy is an ironman...and I am always injured....but I am going to also say that you  can start running a little at a time. BUY Galloways Book of Running. It gives you an idea of how to build up gradually with run/ walk intervals. By building up gradually you decrease the chance of injury( I speak from injury experience). It involves cross training with biking and swimming. It was made for triathletes!!!!!

Ditto, I started at 240+ and still bump into that range unfortunately.  6'2"  IM was done at 225.

And ditch the BMI.  Personally, I don't think it's an accurate reflection of what is appropriate, based on different body types, etc.

Scott - thanks for the clarification on the Achilles. I think part may also be the transition to mid foot striking. What kind of shoes? How long have you been transitioning to mid foot strike? Are you sure (video or knowledgeable observer) you are mid foot striking. The reason I ask is you may still be on your heels a bit and some shoes have less heel padding so you could be causes some stress there depending on the shoes. I highly reommend getting someone to video you so you can check your real strike. Do it several times during a run.

Glenn - go run. BUT before you do. Have you been fit in a real running store for the proper shoes? Many times injuries are caused by improper or old shoes. With that caveat, go to www.jeffgalloway.com. Jeff an Olympian believes we can run to 100 injury free. What I would ask you to do is work into this gradually. Run 1 minute, walk 1 minute - repeat and cover about a mile. Do it three times a week. In week two you can inrease a bit but let's do week one and see how we feel. Give it a shot and post and let us know what you think. Now, if you want to add a bit more weight control here, walk 20 minutes briskly (this doesn't mean killyourself, it means WALK). Then after you run-walk the mile, walk again more easily if necessary to fill a full 60 minute workout.

Brian-thanks for the help. I am wearing nike lunarglides. I am pretty sure I am not on my heels but I may be landing more towards the front of my foot. From what I have read over the last few days I believe the problem is over pronation. I have an appointment with sports medicine on monday to get it checked out. I like the idea of getting someone to video my running and plan on doing that when I am back running. In the meantime I will spend more time in the pool. Swimming is my weakest area by far. I cannot go more than 100 meters without stopping. I am planning on ordering the total immersion book because I am such a poor swimmer. Any swimming advice given would be appreciated. I must improve my swim to cover 400 meters so I can complete my first triathlon in june ( lake lanier, my first tri). The bike and run are no problem so my main focus is the swim. I have only been consistently swimming for two weeks so I have yet to see any real improvements.

Hey all!
Work has been nuts so no time to post.  Today is a SRD for me as we had dinner with reps from a sister company.  If you are ever looking for a good wine try Justin "Savant" 2006.  I love the wines from the Justin (bros) winery.

Glenn- +1 on the running stuff, may be checkout the coach to 5k program (run/walk):www.c25k.com

Scott - on the swim, TI is great but one tip.  Find a coach, masters program, life guard to watch you swim.  Having someone watch you swim and tell you what you are doing wrong is invaluable.  Folks, here know how much I whined about being a horrible swimmer (couldn't swim 25meters).  Still am but I actually like swimming now and getting a little faster.

Hey, where is Freddy?

hola peeps!

a few thoughts:

1) wetsuits.  i used a 2XU sleeveless wetsuit last season and it worked well.  I liked it and it was fairly comfortable, etc.  However, I got an Xterra wetsuit this season full sleeve and I like the additional buoyancy.  It's also a little warmer which helps when you go out for a 6:30 swim in the ocean and it's freezing outside and the water is even colder.

I did read about the Xterra wetsuit ripping, etc. but I think most wetsuits are somewhat fragile.  Just be sure not to use your fingernails (use the pads of your fingers), etc. and you should be ok.

If you buy Xterra, you should be getting at least 50% off their MSRP prices online.  There are lots of coupon codes, etc.

2)  As for swimming, I found that I would always get out of breath after about 200 meters.  I would then have to take a break to catch my breath.  I got past this hurdle by taking it easy and purposely going a little bit slower than I feel like I should be going.  Sometimes it's a little annoying early on because I feel like I should be going faster but if you just keep a steady pace it turns out ok.  One time I was training and going pretty slow and I even told myself "I don't even feel like I'm making any forward progress" but sure enough, a few minutes later I was at the buoy.  I've learned now to pretty much just clear my mind and focus on my stroke and eventually I make it.

Next step is to build up some speed...

 3) I still can't run.  I'm sort of training but not really.  I've been somewhat dormant all winter.  But I signed up for a quick 5k on Super Bowl Sunday so that leaves me with a couple of weeks to sort of get in half decent shape.  We'll see.
