Then a modified taper. Getting closer and closer I'm in my taper, but part of that is I'm fighting an injury. I'm just hoping to finish - although I do have a 4.5 hr ride, but that is really a taper for me, so I' starting to freak a little. I think the injury will be fine, just running sucks right now and while I'll finish, the run training will suck. Many, many people are injured at this point in the ironman game. Seriously, you will be ok. Skip a training session or 2 or 3 or whatever to allow healing. It will be fine Never have wiser words been spoken (typed). You can only hurt your chances at this point. It's better to be 10% undertrained than 1% overtrained or injured. |

As for running, I've done a couple marathons and a 1/2 so I know things are going to hurt, so I'll survive.. I'm trying to heal and it seems to get better. MT tonight so she will work on it, too. |

60 | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread Yeah the excitement is building for sure......my crew have designed some corny family t-shirt that they will all be wearing which I am not allowed to see until we get there. They are all pumped for the race which is pretty cool. Taper has begun. Reduced volume this week with last long ride and run this weekend then full-on taper. I started training hard-core on January 1st and I cannot believe we are here already.......So weird to get last work-outs from the coach. I keep telling myself: one swim stroke, one pedal stroke and one stride at a time. Have fun, enjoy the day and hopefully I will bring it on home shortly before midnight. |

Master 1471 Dunedin | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread I'm so thankful that my taper started on Monday. I could not fathom a 3 hour run in 90* weather! How do you southerners (basically anyone below the NYS/PA border) deal with this stuff and train? The bonus has been I've been buying fruit like it's going out of style. Maybe that 10 lbs that I gained since January will magically go away now! |

Pro 4608 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread This heat is killer. I am technically not in taper but I blew off training on Monday and now today may not have time. Some a**hole stole my debit card # and ran up a bunch of online charges, I have spent hours today trying to fix it before I leave the country for vacation. Ugh. One long run to go and it's going to be a hot one, then I'm off to Italy where I'll be biking just about every day but at vacation pace so it should be a lovely taper I'm way undertrained compared to where I was for IMWI last year, but I didn't tear my plantar fascia this year so I'm ok with that. I just want to arrive injury free and have a good day. I have another IM to do later this summer! |

Extreme Veteran 398 Sea Isle City, NJ | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread Starting to wind down as well. I am driving to LP in the morning. One long bike ride (2 loops of the course on Fri.) this week and one more long run (maybe..starting to feel a little tendonitis in the back of the knee) next week and then its truly taper time. Hope to get two swims in on the course this week. |

Extreme Veteran 596 Worcester, MA | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread I would say the big 'secret' to training in the heat is to: 1. Train some (not all) in the heat to get acclimatized. 2. BEING VERY FIT! Heat pushes the reserve on your fitness, the more fit you are the better you will function in the heat. Yeah, now you tell me, I'm screwed. |

Expert 1244 New York | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread The heat is so killer for me right now. I work a late shift, often don't get home until 2 a.m. To then convince my body to get out of bed at 7 a.m. is nearly impossible. So I’ve been sucking it up, either getting up at the butt-crack of dawn, or dealing with the insane heat at 10 a.m. Both of them are un-fun choices. Still. I can sleep when I'm dead. Or when IMLP is over. Whichever comes first. |

Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread I've been battling ITBS since last Wednesday. I wish I could train in this heat. For me, the secrets to training in the heat are simple: hydrate more, ease up the pace a little bit, wear a white hat, plenty of sunscreen and HTFU. I got two guys working on me for my ITBS, and I'm doing my own physical therapy every morning and night, so I'm praying I'll be able to get in one last 56-mile bike and 13-mile run this weekend. The ITBS forced me into an earlier Taper then I wanted, I've been sleeping on average 10 hours per night the last week. As a result the fatigue fog is lifting and more than likely I'm going to peak a week early. Whatya gonna do. . . at least I got the Tour to watch |

One thing I did not anticipate with my weight loss (60 pounds now, by the way) was just how much more heat tolerant I would become. It's amazing how much more efficiently one can cool off, even when it's humid/hot, when you don't have the blubber equivalent of a 10mm wetsuit on all the time. |

Expert 1244 New York | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread Argh. So, the heat is also killing my nutrition plan (ok, maybe not killing it, but maybe kicking it a little). The heat is melting, melting, melting my favorite Balance Bar (choc chip cookie dough), which sadly, makes it somewhat inedible. Technically, I could probably still suck it down, but it's a gooey mess, and to be honest, it's a bit unappetizing in its hot melty state. I'd rather not have to convince myself to eat my nutrition foods on race day. So this week, I'm experimenting with some other options (I know, I know, don't do anything new--I figure if it blows up on me this week, I'll figure out a way to freeze the Balance Bars in a freezer overnight and hope for the best, weather-wise. I don't want to tempt fate, but will it really be this hot at LP?). ANYWAY. Bought myself two Clif bars (choc. brownie and also choc chip--yes, I like chocolate) for a 4 hour ride I have planned on Friday. My biggest concern is the amount of fiber in these puppies: 5g...a whopping 20%. Seems a bit high--and not something I really want to deal with during Ironman... though the company touts them as a perfect snack for a 150 mile ride. Soooo...anyone have any experience with Clifs? Or other suggestions of non-melty items I could try? Help! (Thanks!) |

Ive never had a problem with the fiber in cliffs, but for me they are too hard to eat on the bike. maybe a lil dry or something. but a lot of people around here train with them, so id see what your body says.. |

Champion 6962 Atlanta, Ga | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread As Swishyskirt mentioned, the heat has 'ruined' her nutrition plan. Don't look at it that way, look at is as a way to modify your plan for the heat if it's hot on race day. Plenty of time to fine tune things and be ready should it happen on race day. I made that mistake at IM MOO '06 (The ICE Bowl). My gel froze, my fingers were so cold I couldn't squeeze my bars out like I had been in training. So look at this as an opportunity, not a problem. Just my opinion. In regards to training in the heat, as others have said, try to minimize mid day workouts and do morning ones. But also, slow down a bit and be smart about your fluids and nutrition. Take more, not because you are working harder but because you'll be out there longer (reduced effort). I have a 1h 45m run this afternoon and it will be in the high 90's. I will go more based on effort and am driving an extra 20' so I can run in a shaded area of town. That's what I do. |

Or other suggestions of non-melty items I could try? Help! (Thanks!) I made a switch to pretty much all liquid nutrition + gels b/c I realized when it was really hot out, I was not remotely interested in eating real food. It's worked out great. On the course last year I took a couple bites of banana here & there when i felt like i wanted solid food. Jorge taught me something about how you need to back off on nutrition when it's hot b/c your body is working harder to keep you cool so it isn't able to process as much. So it was another reason I felt like mostly liquid nutrition was better for me b/c it's easier to digest than say clif bars or granola bars that i used to use as nutrition. |

Extreme Veteran 353 New York | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread Last long run and ride (100 hilly miles) this weekend, then taper-o-rama. Thank god I recovered from that asthma attack/lung infection crud and am back in business. No injuries, feeling good, nothing else bugging me, hopefully it will be a smooth ride from here through race day, other than the MASSIVE ANXIETY AND OBSESSING! And packing, which I actually love to do. We have a treadmill so when it's super hot like the last few days, I just run inside in the ac/fan zone. But strangely enough, doing that has somehow made me more heat tolerant--on the occasions that I've had to be outside, I'm more acclimated to the heat than I've ever been before. This must be because our ac is not that effective... I'm still rooting for a surge of cool weather on race day! |
