Thank you for all your birthday wishes guys! I think in most races this will be a new age category for me (55... damn, I am old).

Talking about rubbing it in: it is 31C today, hot, really hot. Did nothing today, just busy day at work, about 10 hrs (and started at 7am). Might go for a swim in the afternoon if daylight permits.

Andy, fingers crossed for you so the bike arrives as you packed it and you can put it together so it works!

- April 21: Antwerp Marathon in Belgium

Hey Gabe, you're doing a marathon for my 47th birthday. That looks like a great schedule.

Hey Jim that is great news, I will have to print your name on my race shirt and it better bring me some extra speed that day Wink

ANDY - wishing you all the best this week end with your IM. Enjoy the experience and have fun.

No work-out for me yesterday. Had the pleasure of watching my wife do a 5km fun run in the city - 27.30min.

40 min swim this morning.

Andy, enjoy IMAZ.  Can't wait for the full report.

Ernesto, have fun in your cyclocross race.  They are hard just watching people carrying their bikes through the sand.

Andy,

I bet by now you have seen the course and have a pretty good idea on what to do. Stay in the moment and break the race into sections that are chewable, don't think about what's left but rather focus on keeping a low effort all the time, especially when you come out of the water and all those people zoom by you.

LET THEM GO! If they pass you is only because of two reasons, they're either fitter than you OR they don't have a good race plan and they will blow up later.

You are not competing against anyone, just yourself.

Stay hydrated, Arizona is dry so your sweat evaporates immediately. You might think you're not but dehydration (even in cool days) is the worst thing in Ironman and it's a show stopper. You will come out of the water very disoriented into the change tent because the water is cold in there. Have a good transition plan.

Early miles of the run, don't pull an Ernesto storming out of t2 at 8 minute miles, start VERY easy and then speed up if you can.

Enjoy the race even when it hurts, it's your first Ironman!!

Smile

For fun I went back and added all the monthly challenges together.  Not everyone participated every month.  Our first challenge, under the current format, was in March.  No Challenge in April then we've done it from May forward.  Below are the results through October.  Some of the folks who only played once or twice were left out of this exercise for ease of viewing/completion.  Andy and Barry didn't play in March.  I added up their results if they had.  I still have a few more folks to add back in.  I hope you guys don't mind - just thought it would be neat to see how we have done over the year and then total for our band of Merry Men and Women! No surprise its neck and neck for Gabe and Andy...race to the end of the year???  Jim, Joe and me are going to start throwing elbows to get on the podium.  Wouldn't be surprised to see Ernesto bust out a killer month to shake things up.  have I said how much I love this group?  You guys / gals are the best!

Very cool Mitch, well done!

I'm in Tempe now, got checked in this morning, bought a whole bunch of stuff, soaked it all in and got the heck out if there! Ernesto's right, there's too much unbridled energy and sizing up amongst competitors, probably not helping my pre-race anxiety! Going to head out on my bike for a quick ride today, make sure it all works after the flight. Practice swim tomorrow with the BT IM AZ group, then maybe a jog and relaxing at the hotel.

I'm bib number 1609, off I go!

Mitch, thanks for putting that together. Pretty cool stuff, I agree, we are a cool and focused group. Andy, the weather on race day will be picture perfect just like usual in Arizona this time of the year. It will add to race day anxiety for people and you will see many FLYING on their bikes, riding other people's paces. Be disciplined and take it easy, very easy, especially on the first loop of the bike. You will also see many of those same guys and gals walk the marathon an you will run them down. Trust me, I've seen Arizona from the sidelines twice and once from within the race. Most important, don't forget to smile all the time and thank those wonderful volunteers for being out there.

That is bike number three Gabe. I need to take some pics of the fleet and put them, more proud of my bikes than most people of their cars, haha! All my bikes total about the same as a brand spanking new car too! But this is my passion, like I have said before, my gear and race money is coming from the medical bills I will never pay.

I haven't been showing my totals this month, partly because I was kind of tired of it, partly because I thought they wouldn't ammount to much, but after totalling them, it looks like I was wrong. I felt guilty too, being part of this group and seeing others put the effort in, finally made me do it. Today I did a 15k run in the morning in painful heat and humidity, had to walk some on the way back and the sweat was pouring from me for almost 1 hr afterwards. Played taxi dad for the rest of the day.

Good work Mitch. Looks good all put together. Goes to show I have a long way to go. It sure helps having a good group to keep the motorvation up.
Mark- I feel your pain regarding the heat. It's started here as well. 33 today but a least it's a dry heat and not humid like what you will be facing.
