Heading to my parents' for the weekend. Moved longish ride to this morning because I didn't feel like traveling with bike. I ate so much good food last night. My stomach is paying for it this morning!

Well Reagan's rash came back full throttle yesterday, Cindy is stuffy and can't sleep, and I couldn't get on the trainer because of all these needy women.

Putting up the trees (one kids, one adult) and squeezing in that hour on the trainer.

rizer22 - 2012-11-22 8:03 PM Hope everyone had a great day. Had a nice group of 50+ mountain bike ride this morning. There was a group of riders that ride expert/pro class that were already tanked at 6:30 am when I pulled in. Ride was at 7 and ended about 8:30 with a fire pit and a turkey roasting. And of course beer. Really fun morning. Here is a short video crash of my cousin Tom riding behind me. The crash was funny (because he didn't get hurt). Even funnier is how out of breath he was, his grunting, and his explicit commentary after he crashes all the way until he catches back up to me. I'm ahead of him in the blue. I can't stop laughing at him, and glad he wasn't hurt. We lost the lead pack at that point. http://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=mhee&v=exVDHQkpypg
a non-mobile link to that? My mac isn't liking this link for some reason.

Turns out Reagan has inherited Pops' allergy to penicillian.  Sorry kid.  One tree up, one to go.  I am not allowed to partake in the decorating.

So sometimes I wish I had the buy now, ask for forgiveness later mentallity.  Flos just went back on presale and the local tri shop is having a 50 off sale.  Grrrrrr.

I am going to need to fast for a while after this weekend. Pizza at bowling alley and then Mexican feast tonight. Lol

It's a rest day for me.

I have to get my diet under control too. Since my race on 9/9 I really haven't been good at all never mind this past week.

Good run this morning. Two mile warm up at 9:45, 4 mile tempo at 8:15 and a mile cool down at 9:25. Tough to slow down after you've established a pace. The four miles was pretty effortless and felt very natural.

Anyway, I know a few of us wear K-swiss. They are having a BOGO sale!  http://www.kswiss.com/

Speaking of food (Jen -- no fasting).  I just read a new book, The Science of Skinny. Explains chemically why processed food, white flour, sugar, etc. wreak havoc on your body and cause fat gain.  Starting today I'm going completely processed food free (coffee with coconut milk this morning).  We'll see how it works.

I eat very little processed or packaged food. I find it hard to believe with my level of activity that I can't drop 5-10 pounds. I have tried low calories and high calories, figured out my basal metabolic rate and adjusted for activity level and it seems like nothing works and I need to accept my weight where it is. I will look for this book at the library as these 5-10 pounds is something I think about every day.

I drink my coffee with a small amount of almond milk. Haven't tried coconut milk - is the fat content about the same?

My guess would be you are insulin sensitive and you need to cut out all sugar (and flour).  Its a good read, in the same vein as Gary Taube's work.

With regard to coconut milk the fat content is high but its medium chain fatty acids.  I'm a firm believer that sugar makes us fat, not fat.

I have been 95% sugar free for the last 2 1/2 years. Quit after my cancer dx. I have my splurges but they are few and far between. I don't miss processed sugar at all. Fruit I love and hate to think I would need to give it up.

That's where I am as well -- I'm limiting fruit and no added sugar in anything, no cane juice, honey, maple syrup, nothing.

I have found it much harder to lose weight the older I get.  Which I know is normal but it's still frustrating.  Back in the day I could cut back on food a little and drop 10 pounds like nothing.

I'm terrible about sugar though.  And beer.  If I gave up processed foods, sugars, and beer, I'd probably drop some weight.

I think we should start a Whole30 challenge.  I've wanted to do it, but can't convince any of my friends to do it.  Anyone interested?

12 hours of running this week, 65 miles total.  I'm surprised my body is holding up (knock on wood).  One more big week, then taper for the 50k.  I can't wait!

Basically only eat "real" food, nothing processed, no added sugar, no alcohol, no grains, no legumes, no dairy.  Pretty strick, but I think would be interesting to try for 30 days to see how much better it makes you feel.  I've heard if you make it 30 days, you'll never go back.

I'm willing to do it with a few modifictions -- legumes, sprouted grains and full fat yogurt.

So we call it...AlmostWhole30?  Kind of defeats the purpose though, but I'm with you on the yogurt.  I like me some greek yogurt!  It would be a huge improvement (& challenge) for me to drop sugar, beer & processed crap.

What about nutrition while exercising?  I don't think Gu gels are approved.  Ideas?

I'm no expert re: nutrition while training, but as most of you know I can not stomach gu or other sports things. I have used peanut or almond butter in packets like this - http://www.amazon.com/Justins-Natural-Classic-Almond-Butter/dp/B004... - taken with lots of water. Not sure if there are enough simple carbs or not though. Thoughts?

Because I'm back in base and not doing anything particularly long (unlike someone I know who is training for a 50K) my plan is to use pure (no sugar added) coconut water.

I think we can create out own challenge -- the Tri30.  No processed food, no ingredients you can't pronounce, no artificial sweeteners, foods can be eaten if they are in their "whole" form (e.g. sprouted wheat is ok, wheat flour is not) and sports nutrition products can be used if the training/race requires them.

My thought is too much fat, but if your stomach can handle it, go for it.

There is a new product coming out from PowerBar, which is essentially a fruit blend and nothing else (think a smooth strawberry applesauce).  Those might be worth trying.
