I will complete the single IM challenge but I am afraid I am going to fall short on the double.  I am hoping to still make the bike but will fall short on the run.  Of all things to fall short on!  I never expected it would be the running.

For the new folks...we are in the midst of a double IM challenge this month. Swim 2.4 x2 Bike 112x2 run 26.2 x2 over the month of January. Its a fun way to keep you motivated in the off season months

Cool challenge, good idea to keep moving.  Since I have a spring HIM, I am on track as it turns out.  I've finished the swim and bike (I ride the CT during the week, and log 17-19 mph depending on the workout, based on the readout on the CT, not sure if that's kosher.)   I do have 146 outdoor miles, so I will probably make the 224 outside at any rate.

Run I may or may not make as I am slowly ramping back up after injury, but have 18 miles to go, so should be ok

I realize that a lot of folks are not at a point where they can do a double IM challenge...if you want to join in ...adjust your own goals. You can do HIM distance 1.2 mi, 56, 13.1 or even oly distance .9 ,25 6.. Its really a fun way to stay motivated.

John...I probably wont make the run goal either.

Gary...are you busy sending me wine????

Phil,

I wrestled starting in 6th grade until I graduated high school.  I got an offer from a JC (Eastern Mich) but wanted to go to Purdue.  I wasn't good enough to go to a major school.  So I went to Purdue to drink beer.     Glad to see another grappler in the group who is making the transition over to the dark side (Tri's).

I was the guy always overweight running in the sauna suits trying to lose all the weight I could.  We had an indoor pool at our high school with cement bleachers that I use to run because it was really hot in there.  I remember looking at all the swimmers and cursing them.  Now I wish I would have been one of them.

hey all,

I have been the quiet one I suppose..I am slowly buidling my training back up...they said be honest so here goes...as sometimes happens in life, you end up in a really tough situation.  Here I am starting my first "full" ironman training year and er..well..the home life is NOT GOOD.  In fact lets just say I am going through a "major transition" and its all kinda unraveled and really is coming to a head right now.  I am still training, but, some days right now triathlon is really the last thing I am worrying about.  Today i just couldnt get into my swim...i did about a 1000 or so and just couldnt concentrate...At least i got into the pool right?  I did get a run and some strength training in too so I dont feel terribly guilty.  its funny because i find the one thing in a very fluid situation that i can control is triathlon.  If everything else is in pieces, at least i feel good when i workout...In many ways triathlon changed me...physically of course but mentally too...all the hours of running alone gives a person a lot of time to think.  its hard to be in denial about your life when you have logged 20 hours of thinking about things every week.   Its a tough time for me now but i cant even begin to say how greatful i am i have this sport...It gives me something I can be proud of, something i can focus on besides lawyers and money etc...and..it gives me you guys...sounds weird telling a bunch of strangers about my personal life but if this group is about support...well..sometimes you just gotta tell ppeople when your training is affected by stuff..

so each day I tell myself no matter how down I feel I gotta train...because i would feel a lot worse if i didnt train...my mom said "well triathlon is a lot cheaper than therapy"...

so enjoy your long bike tomorrow everyone...i will...even if i feel like i have a ton of emotional bricks on me..i WILL get my long bike in tomorrow and then Sunday I WILL do my long run...i may boo hoo some..but I will run...and then i will feel a tiny bit better...

Okay, where did my post go?  Hmmm, sure I posted but it disappeared.  Okay, who stole my post?

Lets try this again.

Freddy and Diane - WTH are you?  Don't make me come over there.

Really busy work week and am just glad its over.  Ran 5k and now its beer time.  Long ride tomorrow and long run Sunday.  I need to pick up 50+ bales of hay tomorrow but with the pasture a muddy mess not sure how I am going to get it there.

For the DBL IM I will make the bike and the swim but probably won't make the run but I will get close:
January's totals:
Bike:10h 01m 07s  - 184.78 Mi
Run:5h 49m 27s  - 33.67 Mi
Swim:3h 35m  - 7600 M

afrutoz - Welcome, good luck with the home struggles.  We pick on each other a lot but there is a lot of support here.  But I have found that when dealing with Billy that being medicated does make it easier.

Mav - tried to send you some wine but before I got out the door I decide to test it (to make sure it wasn't bad).  Well, sorry, its gone but I can tell you I was going to send you some great wine!

Chris - which HIM are you doing?  I am doing NOLA so the dbl IM worked perfect also.

John - Wouldn't have expected you to be short on the run miles.  May be just once I can beat you on the run!

RVD - welcome!

Scott - OK - have you been in the Lunarglides a while?  Pain from the start?  Or is this a recent new addition.  A couple of things, be sure you are NOT on your toes, if you ever get a chance to go to a natural running symposium you will see the difference on slides but the closest I can come to explaining it is that you want to land on your foot as if you were running barefoot.  So, go to a football field or grassy park - take off your shoes and run a bit - you will land naturally on your mid foot.  That is where you want to concentrate on landing.  You also want to be sure you are not stabbing with the foot....very abusive to the joints - you would know if you were doing this.  That would cause a stop and start motion.

Scott - Swimming - OK - here is your next workout.  Swim 25s or 50s.  Once you are warmed up well and practicing good form.  Swim that 100 but instead of stopping, turn and push off and swim two or three more strokes.  That's all.  You will be about 1/3 of the way into your first 125.  Congratulate yourself.  Walk back to the wall.  Smile really broadly.  Say aloud "Man - that was easier than I thought - Bryan is a genius."  Then swim some more 25s or 50s.  Get out - go home and take your family out to do something fun.  We will get the distance in - quit worrying.  I will let you in on a secret - you can do at least 200 right now if you want to.  Trust me.

IM Challenge for NEW FOLKS - be careful here - I do not want anyone ramping mileage or duration - especially running - more than 10% in one week.  The double IM challenge over the month of January is just something we do to have fun.  There will also be a February Challenge.....it may involve teams....mmmmmmmmm

Ali - no worries - we have all shared some tough times here.  We are friends and that's what we do.  Several of us have been through what you are going through - hang in there.  The sun still rises.  Get some sort of workout in - even if you cut them short like today's swim.  You will see this through....  As far as boo hoo - ing on the run.....no worries...just looks like sweat.  You have no idea what this year will mean to you and we are all proud to walk down this path with you.

My challenge - after a very difficult week....seems some sort of parasite infested my body....I am not going to make it through the challenge either - dangit....I will be short on bike and run I think but I may get close....I haven't given up yet.

Mark - How far is Lake Charles, LA from you?  There is a Tri series there that I have done the last two years.  Won't do the first one this year as it is the same day as my HIM.  Will probably make Race #2 or #3.

I am about 3-4 hour drive away from Lake Charles. I could get there. I checked them out and the first one is out. I will be in Miami that weekend attending the Ultra Music Festival. The second is on the weekend as my IM. But the third one being held in July I should be able to do. I'll be back in sprint mode by then so I will think about it.

I am going to come real close on the 2xIM challenge. The only problem might be the bike I am really going to have to man up next week to get there. I have a 37 mile bike tomorrow so that will get me closer.

Monthly totals:
S:  14600.00 Yd - 6h 05m
B:  136.58 Mi - 9h 08m 53s
R:  39.98 Mi - 6h 37m 48s

For today I did 1:40 on the trainer. I did what I was thinking about before. Every 20 minutes I got off the bike and did a set of core exercises and then 15 push-ups. That really made spending time on the trainer much more bearable. And as an added bonus I got my core training in. I have been bad so far about skipping them. I think from now on I will do this when I am stuck on the trainer.

On question I did have. My swim seems to be in pretty good shape. This week I did a 40 min continuous swim and easily got a HIM distance done in the pool. I originally planned on doing 3 swim work-outs a week. But since I am in good shape there I was wondering if maybe I could drop one and use that time to pick up another bike. Does that seem like a good idea?

Mark - personally I feel two swims a week is plenty.  My longest continuous swims for both IMs were 1:20.  You seem to be well on your way to doing that.  Get two in and spend some more time on the bike.  Better return on investment in my opinion.

I think my ribs have healed up enough that i can run a little now.  I'm gonna try an easy 3 miles today and see if that works out maybe try the swim tomorrow.  At least i can still ride on the trainer.  When you can't run because of upper body injury, are there leg excercises that help keep the legs in shape?  It's only been a week off, but I hate to lose what i've been building up.  It's supposed to be sunny and in the upper 40's this afternoon so even if i have to just walk, I'm getting outside!!

Well did my first run last night.  Felt really good , although I had some residual soreness from Wednesdays Boot Camp conditioning class.  I was able to follow the www.c25k.com's week 1 training progression without problems. I did increase the length of time to 40 mins however.  I have Jeff Galloway's book on order so should be here next week.

My pace was:
6mph (10min mile) for the run
3.5mph (17min mile) for the walk
Overall 2.85 miles

It was slightly uncomfortable to breathe at the end of the run segment but overall I was able to maintain a conversation with my training partner (my 9yr. old was walking beside me..Tongue out).   I guess the logic is to maintain this pace this week but I wonder should I increase speed or should I continue to build endurance at this pace and then work on speed?

Thanks,

Glenn

Morning all!
1-2 hour ride on tap today but will do it later when the temps are a little better.  We had 70's earlier this week and now its 31F outside.  Not fair.

DIANE and FREDDY - Where are you?

John - You can keep the post but remember you ego is at stake here!  May do 7 miles tomorrow just to drive the nail in that coffin.

Glenn - distance than speed IMHO.  Don't be in a hurry to work on speed,.  Working on speed too early in the build process is probably one of the biggest causes of injuries for runners (IMHO).

Ricker - walk, heal up.  Whatever you lose you will gain back quickly.  Aqua jog maybe?

Mark - Your much more of a fish than I but I am still at the point where I like three swims a week but I am a weak swimmer.

TriAli,

This group is more than just a Tri group, it's also a good support group.

Try to keep up with the training.  Have you looked for other people to train with on long runs?  The reason I ask is because a person in my running group went through a very hard divorce.  Both sides were bitter and he was frequently very upset.  I didnt know him all that well before all of this but during our long runs (2.5 to 3 hours) he would tell the group everything that was going on.  He was able to vent to us.  Sometimes people would agree with him and other times we told him he was wrong.  We learned some very intimate details but he just needed to get everything out.  He couldn't tell his closest friends the details he was telling us.  After everything was all said and done, he thanked the group because he said that venting to us was better than talking with his counsler.  He couldn't tell his family and friends all the details because they were friends with her too.  He said that it was easier telling "Strangers" than friends.  I think workout groups are great therapy.

I know after a hard run, I don't have a care in the world.  I don't get road rage or if something is bothering me at work, I can usually run it out.  So keep your workouts going.

Post note:  My friend who went through this divorce has now met a wonderful woman and they are engaged and he is very happy.  Sometimes things happen for a reason.  Running got him through this difficult time.

Good luck.

yesterday morning when getting up in the morning, i was stretching my legs and i must have stretched too hard or something because all of a sudden i felt the most massive and sharp pain in my left calf muscle.  i was basically immobilized for about 30 seconds.  when the pain sort of subsided i slowly stretched the muscle a bit and got out of bed a minute or so later.  it was still painful so i sort of hobbled around for a bit.

i just figured it's a muscle cramp or something like that and that it'd go away in a few hours.

however, this morning i woke up all stiff on my muscle again and barely able to walk.

any thoughts on what i should do to it?  i won't be able to work out (so i guess i'll take a few rest days).  should i stretch it, ice it, massage it, etc.?

the run is by far the weakest of the 3 sports to me so i was planning to run a lot next week in preparation for the redondo beach 10k on 2/6.  i generally jog/walk about 3 miles at a time and may start to slowly increase.

thanks all.

Running I can do in just about any temp (except sleet) but I am too much of a wimp to do a bike ride with my current equipment in 7 degrees.  B2B was 38F when I got on the bike but not in a hurry to do that again!

Morning everyone. Going out at noon today for my long bike ride. I figure on doing about 36-37 miles. But as I type this I am wondering if I should just man up and do 50 today. We'll see what happen once I get out there.

My big news is that I just discovered the wonderful world of Egg Beaters. I just made a awesome breakfast that compares with a 2 egg veggie omelet. 1/2 cup Egg Beaters, 2 tsp olive oil, 1/2 slice american cheese along with diced Green peppers, onions and squash. Spooned a little salsa on top, 20 calories, for a total of 198 calories. If I cut out the oil it would be under 120. And I am stuffed.

This is officially my new favorite breakfast. I am thinking about maybe twice a week making this at night then putting it in the refrigerator so I can take it into work the next morning. Is there any reason why cooked eggs can't be stored that way?

OK I'm off to do that bike ride. WOW is it nice outside. I think I am definitely going for that 50 today.

First evaluate the type of injury you have.  You probably have a calf strain.

Grade 1 tear or strain - mircro tear in the muscle.  This typically happens when increasing activity too much or inflexibility.  Its hurts to walk and run but its tolerable.  No brusing and limited swelling.  1-2 weeks recovery time

Grade 2 tear or strain - You have torn up to 90% of the muscle.  There is visible brusing and swelling.  It really hurts to walk and you can't run.  You can't contract or stretch the muscle due to pain.  3-6 weeks recovery time

Grade 3 tear (no longer a strain)  Its over a 90% tear.  You can't put any pressure on it.  There is a lot of brusing but you cant' do anything.  A long time to recover from

What to do.

R.I.C.E.   Rest it, Ice it, Compression, and Elevate it.  Take an anti-inflammitory.  Ice it for 20-30 min up to 4 times a day.  Wear a compression sock to help recovery, stay off it and elevate above your heart to reduce swelling.

Once you recover.  I recommend doing yoga or stretching lots.  You might want to consider ice baths after hard activities.  I know it sounds strange but they really help.

Good Luck.

Well hello, hello!  How are my favorite triathletes?

Looks like you guys and gals have been very busy!  Sorry to read about the injuries.  Those are killer.  Gotta take it easy and listen to the body.  When I started working out after about 10 years of inactivity, (on week 3 of my first round of P90X, Lena) I tweaked my back horribly and was out of commission for about 2 weeks, resorting to alternating treatments of chiros and masseuses.  I learned really quick that my core was my weakest spot, focused on that and have since had very few problems with the lower back.  Amazing how the weak spots have the tendency to surface pretty quickly.

As far as my workouts go, I was traveling in Dallas all week, but managed to fit in 45 min daily workouts in the hotel gym (1x biking and 4x treadmill).  Workouts felt great, but I  know I pushed it because I was breathing hard.  Unfortunately I forgot my HR monitor, but regardless, listened to the body and kept a pace I knew I could keep to finish the workout.  It's been a few months since I worked out consistently and it felt great!  Was going to attempt to swim, but the pool was small and odd shaped.  Excuses, excuses....

Will stretch today and do Yoga tomorrow.  Looking forward to a spin class Monday morning.  While on the spinning bike, you mentioned I need to mimic street riding as much as possible (skip the sit up, sit down motions of the 'class').  What zone should I target?  70% of max?  It's a 50 minute workout including warmups and warmdowns.

@Lena (love the name, my wife's Lina)  See you're X'in it!  Great!  I have done a few rounds of it, dropping 30 lbs my first month and kept it off for two years.  I'm quite the BB junkie with almost every program in my library.  I've completed a couple rounds of Insanity as well.  I've worked out with Tony a few times.  He's the real deal.  He even helped me with some Yoga poses to concentrate on my horribly tight ITB.  Let me know if you have any questions about the program or if there's anything else I can do to help.  I have been coaching now for over 2 years.

I concur with the running and weight advice.  I ran my first half marathon at 5' 10" 240+ lbs.  The key is to start slow and add mileage slowly, no more than 10% each week.  I followed the Galloway book that was mentioned earlier.  Also, if you get a chance, go to a race and you'll see plenty of people over 300 lbs running.  It's that type of motivation that gets me going!  If they can do it, I have no excuse!

Well, I'm out peeps!  Have a great weekend.

-Todd
