Hi, I feel ok sitting still, drove 55miles to work and felt fine until I tried to climb out of my truck, walk very stiff legged. Mentally Im sharper now and emotionally stable MY commnet about frequency was linked to my attempt to rub daily ib October AND have some failry high mileage mid week runs, like 6 miles on Tuesday 10 miles on Wednesday and 6 on Thur and a long run on Sunday. I dont think I gave myself adequate adjustment time. Add to that one business trip to a strange town and a vacation trip and I ended up with perfect excuses to not run much at all.

JEFF -

It's Wednesday now, and if you have suffered any case of DOMS, it should be about at its peak and all set to wind down -- and then you'll be normal in a day or two!

Yeah, I hear what you're saying about convoluted training, and how life's convolutions got in the way of the training convolutions. All of this stuff is live-and-learn, and for wat it's worth I'm STILL learning some things the hard way. The bright(er) side is that, over the years, I have reduced the frequency and scope of my mistakes......but at least for me it's never perfect. So it goes.

Someone from my other currently-active group is from OKC and bailed on the W.R. h-m when she heard the forecasts. That was to be her first h-m, so she was disappointed --- but is now planning for Cowtown in February. Hmmmm......has that crosssed your mind, too? Just asking!

Good Morning America!!!!!!!!!!  I hope everyone is doing well this fine day, well not in Mobile, its very ugly outside, cold, windy and very gray, yuckkk

Sarah - I hope you had a great bday.  Yum, I love some REAL mexican food, not the stuff some places serve. Then again I love to eat foreign foods.  When me and the family would go on cruises, I would try to find were the locals went to eat and go there.  My family would watch me eat and then we would go somewhere that served more American foods.  I remember seeing the face on my wife when we were in St. Thomas and I was eating curry goat, oh and it was good.  Me and my wife have not been out on a date night in a very very long time.  Im not a drinker either so no later party for me.  When we have gone out in the past w/out the kids we are normally back home asleep around 10pm.

Steve - I hope your hip is doing better.  I'm trying to find a way to keep my training up during the winter.  I thought about doing a lot of strenght training 4x week and run atleast 3x, but Im finding its hard to get to the gym and back home in the short amount of time I have since the gym does not open till 5am.  I was wondering if strength training is a must, or if I can just use some dumbbells at home and do some lifting for the arms and let the biking and running work the legs.  What are your thoughts on strength.  I want to really focus on my running since that is what I struggled with this year and I would also like to get 2 yoga a week to help with my core and stretching.

Jeff - Congrats on the Marathon. Man its hard for me to see myself going 26.2 miles when at this time I struggle to get 2 miles in.  My hats off to you.

OH, In case most of you have not heard. ALABAMA IS GOING TO NOLA TO PLAY lsu FOR THE NATIONAL TITLE.  ROLL TIDE ROLL... I just hope our kickers and special team does a better job this time.

I hope everyone has a great day

Im feeling pretty good today, some mild soreness nothing debilitating. I have considered, Cowtown, the OKC Memorial marathon and others but will see. There are some early triathlons I am looking at as well. Later this month I will try to give shape to 2012.

23 degrees this morning......

I ran the Vegas Rock n Roll 1/2 marathon last weekend. Running down the Strip at night was an experience. I wrote a semi race report on my blog if anyone wants to look there. I've been hearing a lot of stories of stuff that went on during the race and afterwards because of poor planning and allowing 44,000 to race. It'll be interesting to see what they change for next year.

Johanne - Congrats on your finish 1/2 marathon last weekend.  Based on your blog you really had a great time.  I bet that was fun running through Vegas at night with all the freaks out. But like they say what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.  I wanted to let you know I was reading your blog and it really inspired me.  Seeing you back in 2008 and what you have done since then, all I can say is THANK YOU.  I hope others will feel how I felt after reading.  Keep up the good work and know today you made someone feel good and that person is ME.

Thanks George, that is so nice of you to say! I appreciate it more then you can imagine. It hasn't been overnight (obviously ) but it's been such fun and rewarding change for me.

Running the strip was really fun. We've done this race the last couple of years and there is a pretty small crowd at 6:00 am. The night race brought out a LOT more people and some 'interesting' ones. When we ran through the old downtown area, they had brought in portable street lights with generators because it's kind of a sketchy area and would of been really dark otherwise. The crowd there was interesting

Hi All,

I am coming to the end of the semester and have started to read what I missed.  I would have waited until  I had some actual training to report but I read Sarah's blog and I just had to say how impressive what you have done is. Well to me it is very impressive.  I'm like  George, INSPIRED!!!!

I would go out and do some physical activity but I am giving my last exam and I gave blood today.  Being a quart low I am grateful to be standing.

LOL~! glad I'm not the ONLY one!

Ran outside today... the cold really beat me up. Weather has gotten colder this week with temps in high teens/20's today with some wind. Been working on keeping my foot stride short and quick but the overall pace has not really been affected ...yet at least.

Crazy now with the christmas to do's ... shopping, cooking etc... but its all good. I've been thinking alot about all that I'm grateful for in my life and how blessed I am to have been touched by some incredible people. Some of those people no longer walk this Earth but for that time I shared with them, priceless. I hope everyone can find the wonder of the holiday season in their hearts and carry it with them throughout the year.

Yo! Gang! I'm baaaaaccckkkk!

Our computer crashed last week -- literally, as in the satellite receiver came lose from its bracket on the roof and took the long fall. Today was the first day a tech guy could come by, but we seem to be up and running again. Halleloo!

I see there's been some activity here, and I will get to that shortly. As for me.....not much. I'm still subsisting on a steady diet of Yoga and swimming, with the former being the most prominent. On my last one-month pass, which started Nov. 8, I did 29 classes -- about $4.80/class, as each unlimited pass for seniors is $130. I'm pleased with the economics of it, not to mention the other benefits it (Yoga) brings.

Something is goofy here. I will post and return.

Hmmm. We'll see what that was about. Not the computer, but something to do with deleting. I think I hit a wrong button.

As for running and cycling, I will probably get on the trainer later this morning. That'll be my first of the off-season, and my first time on the bike, period, for about 5 or 6 weeks. I ahven't doen a run in about 14 days.....and will probably bear the weather in a day or two. A big part of me is tempted to extend the "off-season" at least through about the 27th, as that is when we will return from xmas with the kids......but I'm getting antsy about being so slack. We shall see.......

Onwards!

GEORGE -

The hip is.......I'm not sure. I had another injection last Thursday, but it wasn't cortisone. I went with the $400 Durolane, which may or not help much. That is a far cry from only $40/per of cortisone, but I had had two of those (June 14, Aug 29), and while that spacing then (and up to now) is good, there is still always the risk of degeneration of the surrounding tissue when cortisone is involved. Soooooo.....I swallowed hard and went for the biggie.

We will see about that, and also whether our insurance covers some/part/all of it. The wonderful comprehensive Ontario health plan is remarkable in many ways, but not so much so with elective stuff. granted, I have a "condition" to deal with, but it is hardly life and death. Plus, Durolane is kind of new and doesn't have a huge body of supporting data behind it, so it's not on the big list of fuly-covered medicines.

ANYHOW, time'll tell as to its efficacy. Here's hoping, though!

See next post about weight-training.

GEORGE again -

No, strength training is not a must, but it can help in several ways. The bottom line for triathlon (or even just the single-sport aspects of swim/bike/run) is that the best way to get better is to train specifically --- that is, maximize the swimming and the biking and the running.

That said, lifting can help build functional strength that will help the S and the B and the R, and it will also just work to maintain skeletal/muscular integrity, and there is a mental aspect to it as well that is beneficial.

I began lifting in early '05, and did it diligently until last April. The decision I have had to make is it or Yoga -- or, rather, some combination of two of Yoga, lifting, and swimming. For a while I thought about lifting between Oct and Jan, say, and then dump that for swimming...................and maybe I should've done that. But, I chose elsewise, and that's that for now.

After my torn meniscus in '06, I stopped doing ANY lower-body lifting. I don't think leg presses or their ilk led to the tear, but there is a lot of force involved with many leg-strength manuevers that I didn't want to subject the knee to again -- especially since I did not have it surgically repaired, but rather just let it heal on its own (it was a type of twear that makes 'scoping of the knee highly problematic).

I mention that just to say that since then, all my gym work was core and upper body. Aside from the knee issue, i rationalized it by thinking (a) I can maximize the power of my swim pull with a stronger upper biody, and (b) I dod enough lower-body work just with running and cycling, anyhow. I also looked at many elite runners --scrawny legs. And I then looked at many elite cyclists -- scrawny legs. Well, not scrawny in an emaciated way, but definitely not bulked-up in the way that comes from serious gym-work.

For me, the results are interesting. For whatever reasons, my run and bike times have remained solid and haev even improved some, despite a few years of aging. So, that has happened while doing NO focused lower-body strength work. Conversely, my swims have stayed about the same, with the olnly blessing being that at least they haven't declined over the years; is that where all that upper-body lifting got me?

I love lifting, and I miss it. I never did it until early '05, but got quite caught up in the mental aspects of it. My goal was never big weights, but more along the lines of moderate weight and more reps. I wasn't after bulk, to be sure, and that never happened. Part of that is that my physignomy is not conducive to bulking, but mostly it came from the approach I took to it.

Prior to hittying the gym in '05, I had a few stints of working with barbells at home. That was good for me, sort of, as at least it helped me enter the gym world. I don't think I did it very well, although I had a series of exercises I would do, mostly targeting arms and shoulders. But where I really came to life was at the gym, where it all kind of "clicked" for me.

Let me know if any of the above is helpful!

Ack! How did you sneak that one past us until after the fact?!? I will get to the report later, but congrats on doing it -- another feather in your overflowing '11 cap! Mercy almighty, you really did manage a lot this season. Ya gotta be proud and pleased with that, yes?

I will also check out the kerfuffles of the race.....but 44,000 says volumes in and of itself. I cannot imagine catering to that many people, and so in my mock-RD shoes....it'd be almost survival of the fittest. That is, here's hoping they have people waiting to greet the runners at the finish line and help them recover, because the race itself cannot properly service all of them. Yikes.

BUT!! YOU survived, and that's all that really counts, huh? Anyhow, i will get to the report when I finish catching up here.

So......What's next??

Nice comments about what the season means to you, and I will keep them firmly in mind as I grouse about what the season has become in recent (like, the last 50 or so.....) years. The constant assault of schlocky xmas music everywhere makes me crazy, and of course there is the shamelessly rampant commercialism; other than that.....................

Mostly, more reflection is called for, and as you are doing yourself -- it can be done completely independently of any of the externals of the holiday season. I will work on that.

As for working on stuff, just keep working on stride length. Not only will it take time to do better for more extended periods (as in, for five minutes as opposed to just a couple, and then eight instead of five, and so on), but also it will take time to build some speed onto the higher cadence. I think that to try to do both at once is running the risk of injury, as it is too much adjusting of the way you have previosuly learned to run. So, be patient, m'dear! (And I suspect you are quite patient.)

Ho, ho, ho!!

Steve,

I'm very happy with my season. I added new distances and finished them all feeling pretty good which was my goal. It's just been a step by step process and sticking to it. Now if I could only get faster I know, that'll come somewhat but I think I'm ok being a middle packer or even just below that. I love the training and the race day jitters and just doing this stuff. My next big race is the Surf City marathon the first weekend of February. I think that'll be my last stand alone marathon. I just want to do one more before Ironman and then that'll be it. It's a lot of running and I like a more evenly split focus.

There is still people up in arms about the Vegas race. Part of the problem is the organizations lack of clear apology but I'm sure they are following their legal departments advice.

Ellen and Sarah,

Thanks for reading my blog and your very nice comments. I've been encouraged by so many people that I feel that if I can encourage even one person, I've passed along the good tri vibes

It's been cold in California! Almost freezing overnight and actually in the 50's during the day. You should see how layered up people dress

I can't come up with adequate superlatives to your blog. As much as i enjoyed reading the L.V. account (and the photo of the Sharks game), the one that really grabbed me was "choosing to make a change". Did I know those details of your history. You probably did mention it in passing at some point, maybe even in your initial bio, but if you did then I just let it slip from my mind. I knew, of course, that you were working to make serious inroads into functional fitness......but I was floored by the earlier accounts/photos of weight loss. Mercy!

I have also known you as a very good writer, but it takes the concerted form of your blog to make that shine through in spades. I hope you keep at the blog, partly to keep amusing me, but mostly to provide a forum for your talent with words. Mercy, X2!

JOHANNE again -

On a more serious note, I find it appalling and unconscionable that the goal of the L.V. h-m is to get 64,000 so it can be the biggest one ever. I can see far, far more losers than winners in that plan, and that's at the very best. At worst, if they have weather problems or a shortage of aid, then there could be disasters.

I just can't see that many people would want to lay clain to having "raced" the world's biggest half-marathon.....but if that's what works for them, well I guess that counts for something. Personally, though, i would not place one iota of trust in the RD to do justice to the runners --- much as I no longer have faith in WTC to serve triathletes properly. I have seen them running a few train wrecks over the past few years, but nothing is worse than how they "ran"/"organized"/"conducted" the 5i50 series this year. I would love to see USAT revoke their sanctioning to that series, just to show them that such conduct will not be tolerated.

That said, some WTC races manage to rise above the chaos, and I'm very pleased for you that Vineman was one of them (by the by, the photo of you running with your bike at Vineman is outstanding). I think as long as the time-honored RDs for their races are still at the helm, the events work well; the problem is when they conjure up new people to run the races.

Rant, rant, rant!!!!!! .....

Hello everyone.. I must confess to being a lurker these days.  My training has been very sparse and is for the short term going to get even more so.  I had a cortisone shot in my left knee this morning... (almost passed out!)  so the Dr. wants me to take a break from anything that aggravates the knee.  So looks like I will be hitting the pool more often, which I guess is a good thing...  Then in 3 weeks I will start a series of "gel" injections that are suppose to keep my knee lubricated... If this approach doesn't help I may have surgery in my future but I want to avoid that at all cost!

Hope that everyone is having a productive winter

We are in that weird winter pattern of alternating 40*, 75+, 25 back to 50 etc-all Fahrenheit. I haven't mastered the metric conversions for temperature or weight the way I can distance. 4.36 miles today, some light rain but pleasant.

ALEX -

Interesting times, playing around injections; I am doing the same. Mine is due to the hiop problem, which manifests itself not around the hiop-pointer area, but rather where the ball enters the socket, so tight to the groin. I had cortisone there on about June 14 and Aug 29, and both times it was an improvement for about two months before some of the problematic symptoms returned more regularly.

The next option to those $40/per cortisones was Durolan at $400 (what's an extra zero among friends?!?), and that's what I had about nine days ago. The early returns suggest that Durolane is not the ultimate answer, but I'm still dimly optimistic that its effects will grow. But as you probably know, too many cortisone injections is a very bad idea, so I might be permanently away from that as an option -- although maybe come next season, another one or two wouldn't hurt....much?

ANYHOW, i will be interested to know how your plan unfolds. I believe I ahve heard positive things about the gel injections, and of course I hope it works well for you. As for Durolane, it too is supposed to help with lubrication, with the thought being that I might be displaying some early arthritic symptoms.

Enjoy the pool!!!
