Pace13,
I am also in California.  You mentioned you were looking for a sprint.  Look into Wildflower.  It is pretty much in the center of the state. Not sure where you are but that may work.  This will be my first year there as well.  It is supposed to be a real fun type event.  There is a ton of stuff on line about it, you should have no problem getting the info.

The race itself soes not look to bad, 400m swim, -13mile bike, 2mile run but I hear it is very hilly.

Morning everyone. Going out at noon today for my long bike ride. I figure on doing about 36-37 miles. But as I type this I am wondering if I should just man up and do 50 today. We'll see what happen once I get out there.

My big news is that I just discovered the wonderful world of Egg Beaters. I just made a awesome breakfast that compares with a 2 egg veggie omelet. 1/2 cup Egg Beaters, 2 tsp olive oil, 1/2 slice american cheese along with diced Green peppers, onions and squash. Spooned a little salsa on top, 20 calories, for a total of 198 calories. If I cut out the oil it would be under 120. And I am stuffed.

This is officially my new favorite breakfast. I am thinking about maybe twice a week making this at night then putting it in the refrigerator so I can take it into work the next morning. Is there any reason why cooked eggs can't be stored that way?

OK I'm off to do that bike ride. WOW is it nice outside. I think I am definitely going for that 50 today.

I LOVE the eggbeaters.....its my recovery lunch regularly. I use spinach mushrooms onions and grated parm cheese...the BEST!!!! I have never tried to refridg or freeze. Let me know if it works because I would take them to work for sure!!!!

Had an Egg Beaters Omelet this morning. Big thuimbs up! That thing was awesome. The only thing was when I opened up the tuperware there was a little bit of water around the omelet. I think what happened is when I cooked it last night I pretty much put it right in the tuperware dish and sealed it. When it cooled in the fridge over night  condensasion form and then dripped down on it. I think next time I will just let it cool for a few minutes before sealing the omelet up.

As far as flavor and texture wise it was pretty much like it was fresh. Just 45 seconds in the microwave and it was ready. I can see me doing these 2 or 3 times a week now.

Yesterday was an off day for me. I spent most of the day in my garage. First doing the brakes on my car and then I got a wild hair up my butt and decided to fix my roomates bicycle. It had been laying around uselesss since she moved in. I bought two new tires, a tube and a new chain and cleaned it up real nice. It still needs new brake & shifter cables but it is ridable now. She was real happy to have it again. It was good practice for me because I want to learn everything there is to know about bicycle maintance. I like the guys down at my LBS but $125 to do simple cleaning and adjustments is ridiculous.

Got in a 2400 swim this morning and if there is a break in the rain will do a 6 mile run tonight.

Have a great morning everyone!

Ali, so sorry to hear about the rough times at home. I'm glad you are still trying to work out... I agree with John and others, long runs can be very therapeutic... And I hope you can use us as your support forum, as well...

Todd, thanks for sharing with me about the P90X. Glad to see a fellow Xer in here!!!! So you are an active coach? cool! I did sign up at the end of Dec, but only for a month or two, to take advantage of the discount on gear and Rec drink (and then will cancel, have no interest in coaching right now). Did you know they were (still are?) clearancing out the old Recovery Drink and the Protein Bars? THe prices are quite good if you wanted to stock up. I was amazed to see that the packets version of the Rec Drink was only a $1 more (and at that, only $22!!). I'm set for a few months lol I enjoy BB forums, nice amount of support in there. So, when you say you worked out with Tony, do you mean One on One videos or you actually worked out WITH him in the room? That would be SO cool! ..... oh and my name.. it's Russian, so most people mispronounce it and call me Leeena (guessing how your wife's name is pronounced?)

Phildampier, Infinit is awesome. I learned about it a year ago (here) and have trained for 2 marathons and an Olympic tri with it (including the actual races) and like it a lot. On my 26 mile training run, I could tell when I hadn't had Infinit in a while and my energy reserves would go down, and as soon as I would drink, I'd be fine again... and this is 6+ hours into running.. stuff works. BT members get 20% off, which helps!

I make what is called a Kimmcmuffin, named after Kim at my office.  Use English whole wheat muffin toasted, 1 slice fat free cheese, eggbeater egg, 2 slices of canadian bacon, sprinkle with Tony's seasoning, wrap in aluminum foil and place in the fridge for up to a week.  As good on Friday as it was when I made them on Sunday night.  Very healthy, full of protein, almost no fat, perfect amount of carbs, only about 230 calories. Truly the breakfast of Ironmen, of course yo couldn't get Lena to believe it.   Anymore questions? I didn't think so.  Bow Chicka Wow Wow, over and out.
Oh Billy, stop pouting

Actually, that sounds like a very nice snack/meal and I may try to make a few this week and have in the fridge ready to go! I'm always looking for good healthy options that can be prepared in advance. Thanks, dude!

Anybody else have good easy options for meals or snacks they would like to share?

Mark: a quick fix for the condensation other that letting it go to room temp before fridge is to throw a paper towel in the container.

Lena: privet!  Wive's named after great-grandma (German).  And it is pronounced Leeena as well.  I didn't know about the clearance.  I'll have to look into it.  I have done a few workouts with Tony other than P90X, X+ and 1on1.  I did some large group workouts with other coaches, but did a cool beach workout with him in Santa Monica with about a dozen others.  It was a pretty crazy workout full of pullups, pushups and leg-less rope climbs.  After that workout, I picked his brain about my high-strung ITB and he showed me how to do pigeon pose and double pigeon pose to release it.  A friend of mine taped a interview she had with him.  She asked him that if he could only pick one sport/activity he could do for the rest of his life, what would it be.  He replied Yoga.  Pretty insightful and you know how difficult yoga can get....

Well to everyone else, I finished a 45 minute run on the treadmill this morning.  Passed about 20 people running in the streets on the way to the gym.  17 degrees wasn't enough to deter them.  I'm hoping my bronchitis (now going on 7 weeks) stops nagging me, then I'll attack the cold.

Keep on keepin' on peeps!

Todd,

Lena forgot to mention she is part of the Russian Mafia!

Cool, now I have a source for the forbidden caviar.

Question for you guys.  I want to sign up for my first race, a sprint at an indoor pool.  The goal for the race is to just complete the swim and establish a benchmark for the bike and run.  Is April 02 (10 weeks) too early based on the fact that I am really starting from ground zero with my swimming?

My current swimming status:
I just got the Total Immersion Book (The Revolutionary Way to Swim Better, Faster and Easier) and the video that goes with it.   So far, I have spent 2 sessions in the pool just working on the first drill (Floating on back, arms at side and kicking without disturbing the surface of the water).  I was able to kick two lengths without stopping and repeated 4 times for a total of 8 lengths.  Yes, 8 *cough* *cough*  It was better than my first day in the pool!  That's all that counts!

So based on where I'm at now, is it doable by April 02 (10 weeks)?  If so, what weekly commitment to swimming should I give?  2x/week, 3x/week?

Thanks in advance.

I would say go for it! If you have been doing steady training for 10 weeks you should have a pretty good base by then. I personally like pool tris. The swim portion is sort of like swimming with training wheels on. You won't have to deal with getting used to mass group starts or the anxiety of not being able to see the bottom or being so far from shore that you get with open water swims.

One very important peice of advice. When you sign up they will ask you what your swim time is likely to be. Don't guess here. Be as accurate as you can. Pool tris are run like bike time trials. Every one gets in a real long line and each of you will go one at a time 5 or 10 seconds apart. The swim will look like a long snake with the athelets swimming up and down each lane until the end. Your position in the line is based on the time you give them. You if you give them a time that is really faster than you can swim all the athetes behind you will keep bumping up on you trying to pass. It'll be really fustrating for you and everyone else will just get pissed at you.

To find your swim time. Just swim the distance when you are practicing and time yourself. Even if you feel like you will be faster 10 weeks from now it dosen't matter, put what you are swimming at now because you can always call them up and change it a few week before the race.

Other than that the only thing I would say is to make sure you enjoy it. There are so many cool things to see and very friendly people that will help you. Take the time to take in all the sights and sounds and excitment that comes with doing your first triathlon.

One more thing. I have found that until I officially sign up for a race I don't really feel like I am training for anything. It all feels kinda...voluntary, for lack of a better word. Once you are signed up it sets your goal in stone. There's no more putting things off because the clocks is running. you can start counting down the days and weeks until your race. you can even gauge how you were doing at the start and how you've improved since then.

If you can do 3 swims a week then go for it. Just listen to your body. If you find that 3X is too much what you can do is start the first week or two swimming twice a week. The once your acclimated you can bump up to a third work-out.

ok so looking at Wildflower, April 30th...Olympic distance. I have 3 months to train (so couch to olympic in 3 months) Is this doable? or am I setting ymself up to just fail here. I dont have a bike but should have one in a week or so, also master swim class starts tomorrow. I dont(and never have had) a weight issue.

its been my experience that "deadlines get things done" so I'm setting one.....

I'd say the only things that make me nervous at the moment are:

-The swim cut off time(1:20 for 1.5k). Not sure of my endurance in the water and have no idea how fast I can swim.

-The bike says it should be considered difficult as its pretty hilly. I need to learn which gears to use, etc etc etc.

other than that the distances aren't daunting at all.

Now I have a MILLION thoughts going through my head...I need a wet suit, how do I get there, what are the transitions like, i need tri shorts and a tri shirt (I think), I need goggles, etc etc etc!!

My family likes this one as we can all camp at the site.

anyway, I appreciate all of your input here.

-Jeff

Todd - +1 on going for it.  You have some work to do but you will make it.

Jeff - You have a really tall order in front of you.  Can you do it?  Yes, but it is a stretch and you need to get your tail in gear now.  Being a wetsuit swim will help but you need to get some OWS experience along the way.  You also need to get on a bike ASAP.  A really hilly Oly can do you in if you are not ready.  One possible alternative: can you join a relay team?  May be do one or two legs and have someone do the other?

Either way, honestly look at how much time you can really train the next few months.  If you can put in the time and effort and remain injury free you can do it.  Otherwise I would consider alternatives.

Managed 7 miles last night, longest run in a long time.  Swam today and bike tonight.  I still have some soreness at the base of my calf and only feel it when I have been sitting for awhile.  May be get one of those sticks to massage it out?

Jeff, I agree with Gary...you could probably do it...but its supposed to be fun. Is there a sprint you could sign up for first? This would give you a chance to get the real feel of a race. The anxiety of a OWS, transitions, and running off the bike. There is nothing like your first finishline. You could easily go from couch to sprint in 3 months!!!! Just a thought. A hilly oly is OK but I think a sprint might be a better experience.

Jeff, I haven't done the Oly, but i've done Wildflower HIM 2X and the sprint once.  This is in no way meant to discourage you from giving it a go, but I agree with the above....   I was going to respond to you WF sprint question that it's fun, hard, but totally doable.  My wife did it on very little training, and she's not all that athletic.  That said, I thought it's the hardest sprint I have ever done to race it, and would not have been surprised if my wife DNF'd.  It's a mountain bike course with about 40% trails, the rest roads, not very technical but riding a heavy mountain bike up and down those hills is tough.  But the distance is short enough it's easy to get thru without too much fitness.  Run is short, but is always either up or down.

Now,  for the Oly.....   I have done most of the Oly bike course except for the first climb (Lynch Hill - well, I've ridden and run down it).  The rest of the course follows the first part of the half.  and the run is just tough.  You've picked a very ambitious tri for your first one, and I'd encourage you to read some race reports to get a feel for it.

Overall, the weekend is fun, camping out, hanging with other racers.  But it's among the top 2 or 3 hardest races I think you'll probably ever do.

My legs were pretty achy after the 10 miler last week, and lots of little sharp pains all over-momentary, upon a turn of a foot this or that way, but worrisome enough that I decided not to push it with the 14 miler I thought of doing. Plan to do speedwork tomorrow and if all is well, an easy 5 miler mid-week and maybe 12-14 over the weekend.

Did Chest, Triceps and Back for P90X today. HOly moly, difficultness!

Thanks for the replies all, I will certainly go read some race reviews and get a feel for it from that perspective. My current thought process is based off of the feeling i have that I could roll off my couch right now and do a sprint. Sure I wouldnt be competative, but I could do it. So the challenge for me is to bump to the next level and push. My goal will be two fold, 1) finish and B) finish as fast as I can!

I will never run a race just to run it, I will always be striving to beat someone or something (like a PR). Sure that may change DURING the race when I've gone too far and praying just to finish, but that will never be my plan.

What is meant by "getting OWS" (open water swimming I'm assuming)? Just getting comfortable in the water that is not a pool environment? I grew up swimming out here in the delta with strong currents, jumping off train bridges, the whole nine yards...I know how to rest without holding on to something(aka floating).

Anyways, I hear what you are all saying which I believe is "its going to be tough" and "you need to make sure you have fun". I am hopefully realistic about this and plan to assess my progress over the next month, meaning see how I do on the bike and swim, and get running miles under my belt (ran 5 miles last night!)

I"m glad this forum is here

Thanks everyone!

Jeff, we are all very glad to help or offer the voice of experience, big or small I grew up by the river and have always been part-fish, as well... However, that being said, triathlon swimming is something entirely different than just being comfortable in the water. On race day, depending on how big the tri is, you will be in a wave with 10-40 people, all swimming at the same time, which means elbows, kicking, pushing, people swimming into you and on top of you. YOu can't simulate that in training, but you CAN work on your continuous swim, (very important!) sighting, knowing how many strokes you should be sighting at, breathing, and generally being comfortable covering the distance. Pool is good for winter, but when it gets warm, definitely try to find a lake and do some early morning swims. They don't have to be long and exhausting (just do the distance), but OW awareness will take care of a lot of race day jitters

haha ya, other than swimming with 11 kids around me, I'm sure I wont be able sto simulate the start at all. based on what you said I do have a few questions that maybe you can hep me with:

define sighting. I'm assuming its basically checking to see if you are still going in the right direction.

how many strokes should I have before "sighting?

how do I measure distance when swimming in a lake? I work right across the street from Lake Merced in SF and I think I can swim there, just dont know how to measure the distance.

So far what I have gathered from the race reports (one oly dist and a few long) is run and bike hills and be prepared for heat (if u can).

Thanks again,

-Jeff
