Dan, way too low!

Really? I used the Michelin chart as a reference.  Did I misread the graph?  My weight is at 59-60 kg and I see the blue line crossing at about 95 psi.   FYI - before I saw this graph, I was putting in 120.

...edit to note that I do use Michelins.

I know you shared this before, but every bike professional has told me that I should be carrying 100-110 psi in my tires and I weigh 45kg.  I believe the rationale was better rolling resistance, but Dineen, Tony or Doug could probably give a better explanation.

Suzy,

there was a similar thread a couple years back that led me to the realization that riding the max pressure was not right.  Give this a read:

I've got a HM Saturday through the Chickamauga Battlefield in northwest Georgia.  Supposed to be a beautiful course.

Dan, I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one.  I've had too many professionals that I trust tell me that between 100-110psi is right for me and I'm sticking with it.  If you want to go low, totally up to you.

Tire pressure is a constant battle in the cycling world.  Some people will go out of their way to sell you on higher pressure and some will do the opposite.  The argument revolves around tire bounce/hop and what that does to rolling resistance of the tire.  It gets even more involved when you start racing Cross.  It is a very similar to the stability shoe vs barefoot running argument.....

Good luck half marathon racers!

Good luck to our racing fools!  Go, Go, Go!!!

When it comes to tire pressure, I like it at about 100-105, maybe because that's the most I can physically pump into them (weakling!).  I did an unintentional experiment last summer, a 60 mile ride with intervals at probably close to 80 psi one weekend and then the same ride a week later at 105 psi (when I went to put air in the tires I couldn't believe how low it was!)  Anyhow, I was able to maintain my power much more easily with the higher psi and my overall ride mph was almost 0.5 faster for the full distance!

So, my takeaway from that experience is maybe experiment with your tire pressure if you are unsure and go with what feels best and gives a better performance!  After all, we can talk to bunches of professionals, look at charts and graphs but bottom line is we have plenty of training opportunities to try different things before race day.

When it comes to John's original question?  I like to pump them on race morning at the hotel but didn't do that for IMWI because I didn't want to hassle with it and wait in line!  Lazy.

CX race for me.  Just signed up for Worlds in Louisville so guess I should figure out why I'm slower this year than last year.

No racing here.  Good luck to everyone who is racing.

Nice pics - those waves look a little intimidating.

Suzy/Dino: thanks for your inputs on tire pressure. I did not realize that it was a hotly debated topic in the cycling world.    I will experiment a little come spring.  My bike is on the trainer and will remain there until at least April, if not May.   I do have some pretty crappy roads around me and it was noticeably smoother when I took the pressure down.  Cross winds and passing trucks tended to move me sideways when I was riding up around 120.

fattyfatfat - 2012-11-05 12:48 PM do you pump your tires up race morning?  or is the night before good enough?

Never the day of the race.  Too worried I might over fill it and get a flat.  Always 110psi before I drop the bike off.  Figure it'll be around 100psi morning of.  Why do you ask?

just realized i didn't answer your question.

i always do it the day or night before.  but on saturday everyone and there mother had a pump and i let it get i my head for a few minutes.  i ended up taking my bike off the rack and over to the mechanic with a compressor.  standing in line i came to my senses, laughed at myself and walked back to my rack without doing anything to the tire pressure.

so, i was just wondering what you guys do.

I usually pump my tubulars up to around 30 psi right before my pre-course ride and then adjust by letting a little bit of air out based on the feel and the amount of off-camber, grass, mud, dirt, etc. during my warm-up laps.  I probably usually end up around 25 psi in the front and 27-28 in the rear by race time.......

Whoops, wrong forum!  Surprised

Tiana

I am not an expert on finding a plan, but I would wonder if any plan would work and you really just need to focus on a hilly course for rides and runs?   I know when I am training for MOO, that's what I do.

Well I am hoping that I can get back in with this mentor group. I was on last year for a while and slacked on my correspondence. Need some inspiration and tips for a half IM next year and full IM in 2014.  Hopefully there is not any weird re- initiation to get back in this mg....or if there is maybe I would like that

I was down at IM FL volunteering and watching John, Justin, Linda and  others race. Met David and Jayne, and really had fun watching all the crazy people ...and now I am ready to jump back in.

Did a couple races this past year, half marathon, two sprints and an Olympic. So I hope that you all don't mind if I jump back in. I will do my best to contribute the little knowledge I have, but may be asking lots of questions from all of you veterans.

I am out of commission for two weeks from some surgery, so no working out (I may go crazy), but plan on being back in full swing soon.

Who are you?  Welcome aboard the crazy train.   you must be really nuts to leave and then actually come back

Interesting article for those who usually run a little longer in their races.  I've been practicing running the tangents in some of my little dinky 10ks to save time.  Maybe that is my PR secret!

Tiana,

3 yrs ago preparing for my IM I upgraded my membership on BT and used one of their plans.  It worked well....I went faster that year than I did this year with a coach.  I don't know if there are specific plans for a hilly race...obviously train on hills.  I'll just add I was happy with the BT plan and felt prepared.

On another note I am having an MRI on Sunday (yes, Sunday) to hopefully help identify some of my "issues" from this past weekend.
