Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Another thing I started doing is taking out the measuring cup and measure everything I eat. I mean you have to be anal about it. The people at work look at me sometimes like I've got some sort of obsessive/compulsive disorder or something but the food industry is notorious for lowering the calories of food by simply reducing the size of the serving. Its amazing when you pour what you think is a normal bowl of cereal only to find that it is really 3 or 4 servings in that bowl. Its like that with everything. |

![]() | ![]() I have invited another peep to the group. Please welcome Fit for Infinity. His story is amazing...I will let him tell it... and I think he will fit well with our growing group. Wow you guys have been very busy today!!!! I can hardly keep up with the posts!!!! Chris ...if you find a way, short of starvation, that works to loose weight... I am game. I have been trying to loose just 10 pounds and I am completely unsuccessful!!!!! I am a nurse and for some reason the patients think they need to bring cake and chocolate everyday!!! I never have this stuff at home and I have ZERO will power at work!!! I want to post a sign that says "please dont feed the nurses". |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Marianne, too funny!!! If you delivered my babies, I'd totally bring you chocolate! So consider yourself lucky you don't live in IL... well that and that I'm not having any more babies (probably, though i"m hoping hubby will cave and agree to just one more ![]() Chris, I know too well it's so hard. I am on a quest to lose 50 lbs myself. That will put me at the bottom (actually, just below) the bottom of the healthy range, so I really probably *need* to lose about 20 lbs, but I want to look good in a trisuit, darn it! And last year, I ran 2 marathons and did my first Oly, and at the end of the year, somehow managed to gain 1 lb. Unbelievable. But now I'm convinced more than ever that it's 80% diet. Exercise IS huge and helps and takes inches off-I am wearing size 10 pants, and my neighbor, who does not work out, is 2 inches taller, 20 lbs lighter and is in size 14. So there. But nonetheless, I still have to lose that weight, and I'm committed this year to do it for real. I told myself I cannot show up at my Half Ironman weighing more than 150 lbs. Just can't. So i'm really watching what I eat, I track calories on my phone... Speaking of which... what kind of a phone do you have? Lots of wonderful apps for tracking food if you have an iPhone or a Droid. I can recommend some stuff if you are interested. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Morning everyone. Had a nice tough swim this morning. Decided to do a 1,000Y time trial to see if I had any improvement since I started in mid December. I managed to finish in 17:09 giving me a 100 split of 1:43. When I first started I was struggling to do 100s at 1:50 so this gives me a solid 7 second improvement in the past 6 weeks. The best part is I felt like I could have kept going. I still think that if I worked really hard I could get my 100s down to around 1:30. I probably would have to start with a regular master class and get some coaching for that to happen. I also would probably have to start doing flip turns. I don't know why I have such an aversion to flip turns. It's so dumb cause I feel confortable in the water doing everything else. Something else I'll need to work on I guess. Hope everyone has a good day. Edited by x_caliber50 2011-01-26 7:17 AM |

![]() | ![]() Mark...I agree on the flip turn thing. I can do them...I just dont. There are no flip turns in tris. ![]() I signed up for a masters group that our gym is starting. I have done it before and it definately is a speed workout. Doing intervals with others always makes me swim faster. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tried learning to do flip turns and I was making decent progress but I have limited swim time and ended up just workin on something else. I did find a video that showed the proper way to do a turn if you are not doing a flip turn. Helped a lot Funny, on Monday made the last of Masters class, they were doing (according to the workout sheet) 10x25m on the :30. Jumped in and I was ripping it up. Fast times and not feeling that pushed. At the end I was ready to high five everyone until the coach says "BTW, if you didn't notice, they didn't move the bulkhead back after Saturdays swim. It should be yards not meters". There went Gary's celebration... |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() SPeaking of SWIMMING! I made it in the pool for the first time last night, WOOT! it was my "free" session to see if I wanted to join the master swim class. I only caught the last half hour of the class but got in and got 400 yards in total. Worked on my "distance per stroke" mostly. The instructor seems very knowledgable and a retired swim coach. She does lots of LONG open water swims (like 22 mile swims) so I think I'm in good hands. Also she mentioned a few folks that were already there training for tri's. SHe stressed that the main thing was to build your lung capacity and learn to breath while swimming. Also stated that once I could do 500y without stopping I would be able to do ANY distance without stopping (I plan to test that theory). anyways, I ended with kicking drills and MAN O MAN were my thighs DONE after that, I could barely walk....overall absolutely LOVED being in the water! |

One of the best quotes I heard on the matter: "Men are the HEAD of the household and women are the NECK." We men 'think' we're running the show, but it's our wives that are really calling the shots. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() One thing that really sucks is that about 6 months ago I start having a bad sinus reaction whenever I go swimming. For 1 to 2 days after I swim my sinuses go haywire. Running nose, sneezing the works. It's like all of a sudden I have an acute alergy to chlorine water of something. Since I am swimming so much now I basicly never am able to breath through my nose. Really sucks. |

I have tried many things...none of which are very successful. Try vaseline up your nose prior to swimming, Claritin after your swim, and /or a netty pot. The only thing I havent tried is a nose clip. I have a friend who suffers as well, and she exhales through her mouth and uses the clip, this seems to have solved it for her. The chlorine really affects the nasal passages and causes a chemical reaction of irritation, hence the sneezing and runny nose. If you have a salt water pool near you ...switch pools. Can you OWS? Maybe one OWS and one pool swim. I feel your pain on this one...its so irritating. |

Lena: privet! Wive's named after great-grandma (German). And it is pronounced Leeena as well. ![]() I didn't know about the clearance. I'll have to look into it. I have done a few workouts with Tony other than P90X, X+ and 1on1. I did some large group workouts with other coaches, but did a cool beach workout with him in Santa Monica with about a dozen others. It was a pretty crazy workout full of pullups, pushups and leg-less rope climbs. After that workout, I picked his brain about my high-strung ITB and he showed me how to do pigeon pose and double pigeon pose to release it. A friend of mine taped a interview she had with him. She asked him that if he could only pick one sport/activity he could do for the rest of his life, what would it be. He replied Yoga. Pretty insightful and you know how difficult yoga can get.... I can't believe you got to work with him right there!!! that is pretty awesome! |

For the time being I don't really have much of an alternative. I will do some OWS but that won't happen til it warms up some, probably in March. I have tried some of the things you mentioned. You're right they really don't work that well. What seems to work best is to take Sudafed. Not the fake stuff, the one they keep behind the counter and you have to sign for. I've bought so much of it I am starting to get funny looks from they pharmacy people. I keep waiting for ATF to come breaking down my door. (Sudafed is what they make Crystal Meth out of). It's just discouraging because i've been a swimmer since I was 5 years old. I've never had this problem until now. But you right maybe I should look into a different pool. Of course that would mean switching gyms but I guess thats what it takes. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() OK, if I go out tonight and have BEER then get up tomorrow morning for a long work-out, would that be considered "carb loading"? |
![]() ![]() |
![]() Thanks guys... yes I have a Droid, so an app would be good. I know it comes down to me and the choices I make.... Sometimes I don't make great choices As for masters, ditto, swim with a masters if you can, I go way faster and harder (and get faster) with my regular masters than I do on my own. My coach is also a triathlete and we sometimes do the same races so he tailors the workouts to those races and training. Edited by ChrisM 2011-01-26 6:06 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello LRR, My name is Mark and I live in North Bend, Wa. I'm 50 but feel 35. 2010 was a year of firsts. First tri, first century, first marathon. I believe 2011 is going to be another good year. Bio: I was not a athlete in high school or college. One day I looked around and saw my health failing. I was working hard on family, relationships, professional development and career but seriously negleting myself. At the turning point, I weighed more than 340 pounds. Since waking up, I have lost more than 160 pounds adding muscle to a racing weight of 215. I've run 2 marathons since turning 50 and raced an oly and a sprint since discovering this world of Triathlon. Like most I'm challanged to keep the weight-off, stay healthy and find a balance between, family, business and my passion to train and improve myself. My desire is to have fun in every race and training session. To share the experience and to give back to the community. At the end of last years tri season, I jumped in with both feet and spontaniously entered an oly. Loved the game so much I joined a tri-club. I'm having an absolute ball training and I know I have much yet to experience/learn. In 2011 I'll be stepping up to 70.3 distance with the Rev3Portland and IM70.3 Lake Stevens as well as plans to repeat the 2010 sprints/oly's, a century, and a few half marys. I'm looking forward to sharing this adventure with you. Mark |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Welcome, Mark... hmm now we'll have to figure out how to separate the two new Marks ![]() Your story is incredible! I can't believe you went from 340 down to such a fit guy - judging by the picture and your accomplishments! I'm very impressed!!! Will you tell us more of your story? My day... I slacked off yesterday, so today, I did 50 min of Yoga X (P90X), then Legs & Back (P90X) and ran 3 miles tonight. Was going to do 5, but my legs were so tired and it just wasn't going good, so I stopped at 3. Never did do the Ab Ripper X, will make that up tomorrow. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Evening everyone and welcome to the fun house Mark. Let me show you around, through the door on your left is the closet where the straight-jackets are stored, make an appointment to see Bryan later for your fitting, and on the table to the right will be your daily medication. Don't forget to take it. I'm not sure if its Lena or Amy but I definitely feel a "Nurse Ratched" vibe going on here. Your padded cell? That's right this way... All kidding aside so far these guys are a fun bunch. Get ready to take your training to the next level. Oh and bonus points if you know who Nurse Ratched is. (Without Googling it) ************************ Well I got a nice 6.4 mile run in this evening. I'm now firmly in the home stretch on the 2xIM challenge. Made the swim a week ago, have less than a mile to go for the run and need only about 20 miles for the bike. I should get there easy. Hopefully I'll get up tomorrow for core work and strength training. Good night all!

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Welcome new Mark, I am pretty new around here too... You will really like this group and they have tons of great info. So tonight I headed to the gym and did a 45 minute spin class. As soon as class was over I jumped right on the tread mill and ran a mile in 11:50. Not a blazing pace but I did my first mini brick (I think). Tomorrow is the big day. Meet with the Doc and get full clearance ( I know I should have got it before what I did tonight but when the bug bits it bits hard) |

Bike and swim are done, just 8 miles away on the run and may make it! Didn't think I would but the knees are doing well. Got a nice but really slow 4 miler last night with one of my older dogs. Good run. Working from home this morning as the roofer is coming to fix our roof. Probably will get an hour on the trainer done this morning and a swim at lunch. |
