Mav, what exactly are you having done to your knee?  TBH, if I had it to do over I may not of had my knee surgery.  Good luck with yours!

As for the IM challenge, I need about a 1/2 mile run to hit it.  Lite swim month for me but Feb will be a better training month:
January's totals:
Bike:14h 46m 26s  - 274.55 Mi
Run:9h 00m 49s  - 51.68 Mi
Swim:4h 33m 50s  - 11486.2 M

Gary,
I have a torn meniscus. This happened in July...I have tried every treatment there is...with only temporary relief.
The surgeon says she may be able to repair it because on MRI it has a blood supply, the recovery from this is 6 weeks non weight bearing...OH JOY!!!! It is unlikely that this will happen because of my age and the length of time since the injury so I will just get it trimmed in which case I will be back in 4-6 weeks. Neither is a good option but I feel like its my only option. At this point I relaly dont feel like I have an option. I am limping by the end of the day.

Billy...if I am non weight bearing for 6 weeks I will make your mother in law look like a walk in the park!!!!

Good Luck Mav.

I am sure you will find a way to make your bandage water tight so you can still swim the day after the surgery.

Some advice, stay away from the internet and your credit cards while on your meds.  The day after my surgery I signed up for Louisville.  Come August 28, I will probably be saying, "What was I thinking".

Mav - As I recall swimming is a non-weight bearing activity, so are crunches, dips and push-ups.  These can even be done from the couch.  rbg.  If you're taking a poll, I have no doubt that I would have my knee done again.

Gary - What are the rules for the IM challenge.   From the January numbers lt looks like I need to get my bike off the trainer and get going on some long rides.  That back tire is looking very square.
January's totals:
Bike:12h 51m  - 194.50 Mi
Run:9h 25m 49s  - 63.02 Mi
Swim:7h 00m  - 17350Yd

Met the challenge....

Bike:23h 49m  - 405.5 Mi
Run:10h 40m 03s  - 63.43 Mi
Swim:9h 20m  - 29900 Yd

Only 201 miles were outside, but I also had 10 CT rides (and another tonight), which I believe are good for some distance.  Most of those were in the 17-20 range based on the CT readout.

Fit - LRR has the final say so on the rules.  A good portion of my rides were on the trainer but just used the Garmin sensor info.  My training tire is looking awfully flat but plan to ride it for awhile longer.  I have a replacement tire but just too lazy to put it on.

With my 7 mile run n the rain last night I have returned to the need of having bandaids for the chest.  Parts of my chest are a bit sensitive today and didn't like the chlorine during my swim.  My original running plan was to swap to a run/walk once I hit 6 miles but everything felt so good I just kept going.

Mav - awesome that it sounds like they can fix it.  My Dr was less than optimistic and to be honest I think he really didn't believe there was a chance.  In retrospect I should have just taken 3 months off and would be in the same spot.

It feels like the thing is going to fall apart when I run and I am only 138lbs.

Busy day at work today.  Just now getting caught up and posting this mornings 5:30am workout.  And I missed the 50% off sale, work is so over rated.

WU: 6x100 Swim
Drill: 6x50 One arm drill. 25(3L, 3R, 3Both), Swim Back
MS: 3x (1x150@3:15, 1x100@2:10, 1x50@1:05,
1x300@6:30
CD: 1x100@Easy

<-- Learned a new variation of the one arm drill.  I call it 1 arm dead man.  Swim for 3 strokes using left arm only, but right arm is held at side.  After 3 reach with right and drop left to side and stroke for three.  Then swim normal for 3 strokes.  Found it difficult to get air with an arm held at side.  flet like a dead fish with zero natural rotation.  Best I could do was to stroke and just forget about breathing for a 6 count.  Normal swim felt so fantastic after 25 yards of master class drowning.

and I saved $58 What does that tell you? ))) I'm run and recovery powder set for a while ( I don't do custom formula anymore, because I don't have any special issues and i compared the sliders and in my case, the difference is negligent, so i figured why pay $4 more? So i just order from the pre-formulated options)

haha... a LOT (maybe all? ) of my running friends express unkind feelings toward the treadmill at the mention of 15 miles But surprisingly, I've never minded the treadmill... and I'm still getting used to run in the cold (read=not one run outside this winter yet), plus it's so convenient with two little kids in the house (during naps, etc), so while yes, it's kinda boring, I really don't mind.

We continue to get hammered with snow for the second day in a row. There is a local church that has posted on the bulletin outside "Whoever is praying for snow, Please Stop"

Mav, funny... not the snow, the sign. We are in the middle of it, too...
here is a little article about last night downtown Chicago, scary: http://www.examiner.com/weather-in-chicago/chicago-blizzard-shuts-d...

Thankfully, we woke up with power, so we are safe and warm. Good thing we don't have to go anywhere today...

Good morning all. Took a few days off even though I should have just taken one. Oh well i'll get back into it. I got some core work in yesterday morning and started doing some chin-ups. Boy do I suck at them. I hope to be able to do 3 sets of ten unassisted chin-ups within a month. We'll see.

Then I had a cycle class last night. It was OK. Run by my local bike shop. Anything to get on the trainer in this weather.

Swam this morning. Tried a new drill. It is supposed to help you increase your lung capacity. What you do is do 10x75s, on the first 25 you breathe every third stroke, next 25 every fifth stroke then the last 25 every seventh stroke. Take 15 sec rest at the end.

Fun drill, I think I will try doing these for a while.

phildampier - 2011-02-01 11:27 AM

I can certainly relate to your aversion to the trainer. Have you ever tried to do intervals on it? I found that really breaks up the monotamy. What I do is to first warm up at my zone 2 pace for 10 minutes. Then for the interval I do a ladder set. I increase the incline to 3.5% for 2.5 minutes, then recover for 90 seconds, then 5 minutes and recover, then 7.5 minutes and recover, then 10 minutes and recover. then work my way back down. Then cool down.

That gives you a work out that's about 70 minutes long that will kick your butt and is definately not boring. You can adjust the intensity of the interval by increasing or decreasing the incline + or- a percentage or two. The goal of keeping your HR in the middle of zone 4.

******************************

Have a great morning everyone.
