jaro0606 - 2009-03-03 11:28 AM Hi everyone. Thought I'd come out from under my invisibility cloak and join in the fun. I've enjoyed reading this thread and have found it all very informative. So being from the UK I'm guessing I'm the only Brit on here that's doing IMKY? Not spotted anyone else anyway. So how hot was it last year? They way some keep mentioning a sauna I'm guessing it pretty warm! I'm heading out to California for some warm weather training at the end of May to give me at least some taste of warm weather - don't get much over here!. My cousin lives out there and she too is signed up for IMKY. My official training starts in just under 2 weeks time and I'm ready to get started on it. This too is my first Ironman. Completed my first Half last October in Vegas. That was hot but it was a dry heat. Need to sort my nutrition out better on the bike though as I suffered on the run there! Anyway, good luck to everyone and hopefully we'll all make it to the start line - and the finish line :-) Jane

Welcom aboard!  Where exactly is Wirral?  We'll be in London in June 2010.  I love London...even if they don't know what side of the road to drive on.  When you make it to Louisville, remember to "keep right" on your bike!  :-)

How hot was 2008?  Hotter than a $2 pistol!  No, not really.  I don't remember it being that hot....then again, I have a short and very selective memory!  I tend to only remember the good things about life and filter out the bad memories.

Don't believe a word of this.  Evey time this hot lady passes a bank the temp goes up by 10 degrees!

wes mantooth - 2009-03-03 12:51 PM I think I have hit a wall swimming (figuratively of course).  It seems lately, I am getting more tired early in the workouts.  Today at lunch, I was out of breath after 50 m!  This happen to anyone else?  If so, how did you get past it?  Did you just keep swimming, or did you take a break from swimming?

Oooh, that reminds me of my favorite fish joke.

Q.  What did the fish say when he swam into a concrete wall?

A.  Dam

RE your question...sometimes you're the windshield and sometime you're the bug.  For me, enery level seems to be a big factor in the pool.  If I go for a really long bike and run on the weekend, my Monday pool performance suffers.

~Mike

Ouch!

Oh, yeah. It was hot. I was just there watching and I was hot. I'd believe it was very bit of 93*.

Well now, therein lies your problem!  If you were on the bike you'd have a nice 15 - 20 mph breeze blowing on you to keep you cool!  Brrr!  :-)

There was once or twice on the bike when I guess I was going with the wind at the same speed and direction of the wind and I thought, "Dang, it's hot!!" But then my speed and/or direction changed and I got the wind back to cool me off.

I got a tip from a guy who swims at our health club who happens to be the 65 year old world record holder in several events. He is simply fast. He suggested on days like you are descibing that you should do 4-6 25 yard/meter sprints with 20 seconds rest. Or you can also do a sprint half way down the pool and easy into the wall the rest of the way for 6-8 lengths. Then start your regular workout. He says it expands your lungs and basically flushes our the blah feeling. I have tried it and for me it works. Good luck.

It is going to be in the high 50's this week! I can't wait. I plan on getting out and running outside and maybe even a bike to work. I just hope we get a little rain to wash the salt off the road. It really eats up your bike. Also with the time change coming life is getting nothing but better!

Hi Mike, thanks for the kind welcome.

The Wirral is a peninsula in the North West of England just by Liverpool. We've got pretty much everything on our doorstep - mountains of North Wales, the rolling plain of Cheshire, lots of lakes and even the open sea. The only thing we're missing is the sun and heat!

smoke - 2009-03-04 1:27 PM I should add the "mocking bank sign" to my list? Giant Catfish...abbies thumb in my arse...100% humidity...6+ hours of chasing spandex with no possible chance of catching them...and now a sign to remind me its friggin hot! SWEEEEEEEEET! Did I miss anything?

Just remember, it's all (mostly) about the bike!   OK, that wasn't much of a segue....just a shameless excuse to post in this.

With apology to Conway, my ironman song....

So you came from New York city
And you want to see the sights
You've heard all about these triathletes
And those crazy iron Knights

I see you've got your eye on something
Leaning on the aero bar
But the toughest ride he's ever had
Was in his foreign car

So don't call him an ironman
Until you've seen him ride
'Cause a Giro helmet and Izumi shoes
Don't tell ya what's inside

And if he ain't good in the saddle
Lord, you won't be satisfied
So don't call him a ironman
Until you've seen him ride

smoke - 2009-03-04 2:22 PM What the frigg! Now I have to sing while biking !!! Im never gonna catch the spandex! Whats next?????? Show tunes and dancing at T2? Post race kabobs and sing along? Pre race dinner dance to the achey breaky heart song? 80's trivia as you exit the river with a catfish on ur arm (and thumb in the arse)

Singing on the bike is not a requirement.  I was busy scoring all of the IM a$$es flying by me on the bike

Hey I forgot to add I got my speed suit today in the mail and it is sweet. I got the Blue Seventy Point Zero 3. It was on sale for $180.00. I hope it is worth the money. I figured I would get one since it is my first and it is a long way without a wetsuit.

Do you feel like it helps in the swim...i.e. does it make you more bouyant?  I have heard mixed reviews on the speedsuits.

Supposedly it does nothing for bouyancy but helps with gliding throught the water. Whether it is worth $180.00 that is another story. I have heard people say it has given them anywhere from 2-6 seconds per 100.
