Hey gang!  I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.  I got in 1.5 hours on a muddy bike ride on Saturday, and got in close to 7 miles on a run today.  The rest of the weekend was spent with 2 additional kids spending the night at our house.  The three kids we have + 2 more = adults being greatly outnumbered!  Train hard peeps!

Weight check everyone!! How are we doing?

Had a great run this morning. I figured out how to put workouts in the Garmin. It makes running even more mindless, just listen for beeps and the Garmin tells you that you're going too fast or too slow. (I was usually going too fast. ) I love gadgets!!

I hit 164 for 1 day before going back up to 165, so my weight is 165 as of today.

Tonight, I had a bike workout scheduled, so I pulled out the rollers.  This was my second try at the rollers and I still haven't been able to take my hand off of the wall.  Also, I can't seem to go fast on the rollers.  Today, I made it to a whopping 10.2 mph.  I do hope they get easier to use, as I hear great things about improving bike handling skills with using rollers and I definitely need to improve my bike handling skills.

The rollers will get easier Barb. I haven't gotten mine out yet this year but maybe tomorrow. The faster you go the easier it gets. I generally keep the chain in the big ring in front and 3 or 4 up from the bottom (14-15) in back. Spin right up to where you're at a 90 or so cadence and see how that feels. I know your avg speed will go up.

Last weigh in was at 225.  It has been on a major yo yo lately though.  Have been as low as 222 and as high as 232 since starting our challenge.

168.5 this morning.  Hopefully tomorrow I will be down to 168 or 167.5 and I can have you move the mark.  It has been coming down pretty steady 1 to 1.5 pounds per week so that rate works for me.

I am usually a gadget guy too but I figure I will get through my first tri before starting to add too many toys.  Have started using a Polar heart rate monitor that I got for Christmas so I am starting to post my heart rates with my work outs but haven't done a TT yet to know where I should be.

My goal for this week and all of Feb is to get in the pool at least 3 days a week so everyone get on me if you see me missing it!

Hi Bob,

quick qestion on your logs you list your percent of body fat, what scale do you use? I know at IMKY they had some scales that were pretty cool and I am thinking about getting one.  Just wondering how you like your model.

Hey David! I hope the training is going well for you.  I was getting a little worried that we lost you over the holidays.

I have a Tanita Ironman scale and do like it. I don't necessarily like that it tells me that I'm 21.6% body fat but it's very consistent and also breaks down % water, % muscle, basal metabolism and a couple other things I don't pay much attention to. The scale at KY seemed to be about 6 or 7% low from what mine said, after talking with some of the athletes they agreed with that. I was shocked at how close the Tanita was to the hydrostatic weighing I had done a couple years ago. It was within .5% and hydrostatic used to be the gold standard for body comp analysis.

Keep up the consistent training!!

Aweful weekend, I did a postal 1650 and my times were wacked, does this happen when you are base building? My first 100 split was a 1:20 and I was laboring so I backed off of my pace, my 2nd thru 16 were all at 1:50 pace plus or minus 2 seconds. I held a 1:51 pace steadily, but this is very slow for me,Im very bummed, time to HTFU!

Weight is at 185, I have not made it a priority and I need to,looking at the pros at Kona is inspiring and they are ripped, I need to get on board!

No I went down to the keys for a week or so and did some relaxing and training down there. When on vacation the last thing I think about doing is logging in my training.  Back to reality in Ohio counting down the days until we can take our training out doors.  Did you volunteer at IMLP this year to get a spot? I may try to get in that race next year.  Thanks for the info on the scale.

I ended up not doing much over the weekend other than switching my girls rooms around.  I couldn't believe how long that took!  So we had Chinese Saturday night, and Chinese leftovers Sunday night.  By Monday morning, every bit over energy was completely drained from me, and I felt like a rock was sitting in my stomach!  I should know better than that.

Had a nice hilly run today.  The trail I normally run on is now ice with a layer of powder on it, so it was virtually impossible to run on.  Not fun, so I went into a new neighborhood being built and dodged the backhoes!

Today, I got in a run before work and a swim after work.  Since I've been playing with my nutrition, I ended up with no energy for the swim.  I need to tweak that some more so I can finish the whole workout.

Wow, obviously we were a busy group today.  We were only 5 or 6 groups from the bottom of page 2!!

What did every one do today?  I did 6 miles on the treadmill.  Nice pace, felt good at the end like I could have gone longer but my shins are a little sore tonight.  Putting ice on them now.  Hopefully they will feel better before Friday's run.

Anyone have an answer or thoughts:

On tuesday I ran: 5x 2' at 8mm pace with 7% incline.  My legs were toast after the 2nd interval and had to reduce speed/time/incline.  My HR never got above the bottom of Z5a, however.  Given the level of pain I was experiencing, I would have throught I'd have been much more anerobic.

Last night same thing happended in the bike: 7x 90" LG/15 at max effort.  HR never got over 160 but my legs were toast.

Why would my HR remain relatively low but my legs be so dead?  What can I do to overcome this?  I am pretty good at suffering and was surprised by the data.  One time and I'd chalk it up to a bad day, but 2x in different sports, causes me concern.  Thoughts?

I would never consider Z5a a relatively low heart rate.  That's hammering pretty hard.  Intervals are going to toast your legs.  That's why many reccomend a rest day after a hard breakthrough interval work-out.  Just my opinion.  Nice jon by the way.

Big weekend plans for me!  Tonight I'm heading up to a YMCA camp with my younger daughter for the weekend.  We've gotten a bunch of snow the last couple days, so there will be a lot of sled riding, and a lot of tired girls!!

We'll get home early afternoon on Sunday.  I may go for a run if I'm up to it.  After that there's a little football game to be played!

Skiing tomorrow for me.  May get a run in on Sunday depending on what time we get home.  Can't say I have too much skin in this weekend's game.  Always fun to watch the Superbowl but don't really care who wins.  Maybe I will root for the underdog...

Have a great weekend everyone!

PS--January is done.  Time to start working on your February goals!

No need for concern Jeff. Both workouts were very well done, I'd never call a HR of 160 "relatively low". I think the length of the interval may have had a little to do with it as well as being on a treadmill and trainer. HR's are almost always lower on the treadmill because you are not doing "all" of the work, the belt is doing some of it. 90 seconds and 2 minutes are long enough to get you out of the anaerobic zone and have to pace yourself somewhat.

Bottom line is that you had two awesome workouts and your RPE was in Z5 and you fried your legs. (I don't envy that pain at all) Keep up the great work!!

If it makes you feel any better I couldn't get my HR into Z3 for my ride the other morning and my Garmin kept beeping "HR too low!! Speed up!". The little bastard!!

I just completed my first brick of the training season, a 2 hour bike and a 10 min run.  (The run was cut short due to an asthma attack.  The government mandated a change to asthma inhalers starting 1/1/09, and the new inhalers don't work nearly as well.)

Tomorrow, I have a 1:20 run followed by core work.  After that, I will be cheering on the Cardinals.  While I think the Steelers are the better team, I have to root for the underdog.  Also, when I was a kid and the Cardinals were in the NFC East, I used to cheer for the Cardinals to make my Dad mad as he is a die-hard Eagles fan, so I will have to pull out the St. Louis Cardinals football t-shirt.

Happy sunday morning all, just had a little oatmeal with the 9 month old.  She said "pleh" and I agreed, maybe I'll make pancakes instead.

Due to a great game and a few glasses of Merlot a swim didn't happen this morning. I hope to get over to the YMCA this afternoon when I get off work to lift and swim.

I hope everyone had a great weekend!! Yesterday's run was awesome, spring is just around the corner!!
