WWND?

I am contemplating changing up my planned season.  I only have one race that I'm actually registered for as a tri right now. Here's he thought...that race has FREEZING water, even in August.  Should I do another early season oly to get my wimpy "I hate cold water and wetsuit" self over it?  There's Rumpass in Bumpass April 18 (set up always does a good race) and Rocketts Landing in May (first year for this race and I'm not a huge fan of Richmond Multisports).  I'm planning to do a century ride early May so I think the Rumpass in BUmpass (what a geat name!) would be the better race training wise.

I'm also considering doing the Patriot as a HIM instead of the International.--that's in September.

Thoughts?

Hi Judi - I guess it depends on both cost and training plan/recovery from racing...

If you want to get used to the whole wetuit and cold thing you could do the race as suggested or just make a point of doing some COLD OWS training  in the lead up. What do you think you will get the most benefit from? (if you do want to race the April option does seem best)

If you are doing a century ride then thats the basis of your training for the HIM so thats a good start - are you comfortable about fitting in the run/swim training too? Im prett sure you are more than capable...

Swim..not a lot of cold water here, by mid to late June the river will be up to 80+ degrees so getting in the lake at Cayuga will be a shock no matter what. I did the 1 mile river swim last year and know I can handle a long swim (can I handle the long bike and run after it?

Bike, I just really want to do a century this yea since I haven't done one and the Capital to Capital is a well supported ride with decent terrain.  (ie modest hills, no monsters)  The HIM sort of popped back into my head today and I'm still thinking about it.  I know my attempt at riding that distance last summer was painful but I had also never gone that far before.

Run, I've done 2 stand alone half mary's...Problem is I despise long runs in high humidity.  It's as hard to beathe in that as it is with the cold weather playing games with my asthma.  Can I handle the length of the day is the bigger issue?

bathwater warm is fine...gators definitely aren't!

Personally, I don't think I could do Patriot's as a HIM.  The run course was pretty brutal with the cobblestones and the heat.

As far as the other two, I would take Rumpass in Bumpass, although I think it is also going to be very cold.

Mmmm, yeah, another non lover of RMS as an organization....The VA page thread on Rumpass says expect water 60 degrees.  How cold was it last year at the OWS clinic when I freaked out?

Hi Judi - based on all of that information you definatley could do the HIM... yuo have a good base and with the right training you should be able to finish no worries.

If you are worried about the humidity is it possible that this isnt the right HIM for you? Or is it something you can control by carrying an inhanler with you on the run?

If its still in your head I think its something you should seriously consider... can you get some outside advice? Talk to a coach? Someone who has done that specific race before?

I think 55 - 60.  You could try going to the OWS clinic and using a neoprene cap.
