Iron_Gus - 2009-06-01 6:41 PM Hey Bill, a question for you. I have returned home from a recent trip interstate with business. I am also getting over the flu (not swine apparently ) but I have developed an annoying cough. I basically feel ok but any sort of exercise sends me into coughing fits. Should I completely rest until this has passed or should I try and persist with the exercise regime? I am getting concerned that I will lose all condition that I have developed if I don't do something but I don't want to 'kill' myself trying to push too hard, too early. What do you recommend?

Glad to see you back Gus!

The general rule of thumb for training when you are ill is to lay off if it's "below the neck". I will say that I personally only follow that rule if it's difficult for me to catch my breath,  if my cough is "productive" meaning I am couching up junk, or if I have fever.

If I had a persistent cough that didn't seem to improve after a few days I'd see a doc just to on the safe side. Hope you feel better soon. It's aggravating to feel like what we gain in training is slipping away when we're ill.

I just had a bout of illness that derailed me for two weeks, but I feel better now than I did before oddly enough...

Thanks mate. My cough is not productive and can get the better of me. I will take it easy to begin with and see how I go. I will let you know the results.

As for the S thing... I'm no swim expert, but I don't do it and I don't see how it helps generate any more power in the pull. The few swim coaches I've worked with don't advocate it (I did ask about it at some point years ago), so I can't say why they'd have you do that. Did they offer any explanation?

All he said was that it was a way to get the most out of each stroke.

Hey all, I went swimming last night and I went pretty well. I was worried that I would have suffered some serious form loss but I was happy with where I am. It was good to get back into action and swimming was probably the best way to go with my cough and all.
Just thought I would let you know. BTW I am down two pounds from last week so I am confident that I back on the road to a leaner, trimmer physique.

There's a funny caveat to that. When I was sick last month I actually gained weight because the calorie deficit I create in training wasn't there.

Glad to see you back Gus. I feel like we tend to expectantly overestimate our losses when we take a week or two off. There are certainly losses, but I know I'm always surprised (even last week) when I come back and I can still train with intensity.

My last flu episode helped me lose 4 lbs and thus run faster with less weight and after muscle rest.

Hey Guys-

Just thought I'd let the Texans in the group know I'm in Dallas through Saturday for a trade show at the Hilton Anatole. Went for a run this afternoon along what appears to be abandon railtracks that sit up top from a park below. Nice 4 mile run and not too hot. The pool and workout facilites here are pretty nice. Going for a swim tomorrow in their outdoor pool.

Thanks for clarifying the "S" stroke technique, I decided not incorporate it.

Well, off to the Blue Goose Cantina for some Mexican and a Marghertita or three.

Joe

So i sign up for my next race (publix siesta key sprint this saturday) as a clydesdale (200+).
I hit 204lbs this morning.
When I want to lose weight, I don't.
When I can't lose too much to stay in my division, it's melting off me.

Cheers!

Funny how that works. Maybe you're picking up the intensity in your training as race day approaches and that's where the weight goes.

I'm racing- publix siesta key sprint- 600m Ocean swim/ 12.6 road ride/ 3.1 beach run.
I'm aiming for:
Swim 600m: 12 minutes (It's been rough waves with the rains)
T1: 4 minutes (There's a 300y run up the beach from swim exit to parkinglot/transition)
Bike 12.6mi: 40 minutes (only one U turn, but some traffic stops)
T2: 2 minutes
Run 3.1mi: 28 minutes (Twisty paths and beach)

Total Time to beat for me: 1hr 25 minutes

I'm pretty stoked...I have my first ever OWS tomorrow, followed by a 15-20 mi bike ride. I finally managed to link up with some other triathletes here in town, so I have some new training partners.

Good luck with your race, Steve!

Nature is a funny thing.
So the huge waves and heavy winds literally picked up the buoys and were pulling them down the beach.  Amid lightning strikes and jet black sky clouds, they called off the swim.  I saw someone jump in the water and swim with the current.  He did two permanent beach buoys (300y) in about 10 seconds with the current.  Fierce waters.

So there we are all standing around at the run start because they decided to change it to a 2mi run/13mi bike/3.1mi run.

That's when the heavens opened and it began raining so hard you could only see about 10 ft in front of you.  Of course, without a bull horn the announcing turned into he said/she said/they said down the line.  About 1/4 of the people left at this point.

I pulled on sunglasses so I could keep my eyes open in the driving rain and took off.

It's funny how the beach turns into a mud pit in a heavy deluge.  Good times running in that.

Screwed up my T1 because i'd never practiced taking my shoes and socks OFF before getting on the bike.  Turns out sand will get everywhere when you run in a soupy gulash of seaweed and beach sand.  Shoes, socks, legs.  Managed to have a sock stuck to the velcro on my bike shoes so I stopped, thinking it was something wrong with my shoe.  Ripped it off and took off onto the main road.

Crushed the bike.  Never was passed, stopped counting after passing 20 people.  The rain scared the other sissies so they went slow.  I learned that skinny road bike tires will cut right through puddles, but the spray onto other people might have drowned out my "on your left" call.

By the end of the bike, the rain slowed a bit.  Picked up my errant sock on the way in to transition amid cheers and guffaws from the onlookers.  Rain was just a drizzle, calm enough that I could run the next 3.1mi without sunglasses.   I kind of missed the rain at this point cooling me down.

Considered stopping after the bike, but the wife and kids had come out and so I talked a minute or two to them and put my wet sandy socks and shoes on. The run sucked because it's my weakest event.  Calves were talkin' to me in the soft sand.

Nice practice session for next week's race on honeymoon island.

Time by my watch, 1:31.

Thanks for all the good luck wishes,
steve

Man, sounds like some pretty bad weather.  It sucks to have messed up the race, but it sounds like you gutted it out and got some practice in bad weather.  I have yet to ride my bike in real rain or standing puddles, so you are a step ahead of me on that one.
