Hi ladies!!!

I came upon your thread today and I have to say the amount of encouragement was AMAZING!!!!  I am just starting training to do my first tri and found your words very inspiring!  I'm not trying to lose weight BUT I really wanted you to know that if I was standing beside you on the starting line the LAST thing on my mind would be your weight...I would be thinking, ROCK ON!!  LET'S DO THIS!!!  We all have our issues and I am terrified to do my first HIM but I know as women if we all stick together and support one another along this journey we can ALL finish this with a ton of pride!  I think all of you are amazing and are very lucky to find "buddies" to do this with!  Have a blast at the HIM and I can't wait to come back and read your thread to see how everyone did!!!!
GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!!!!
Laurie

Welcome to both Keely and Laurie.  This is a very nice group of ladies.  We don't have any ego here, which you sometimes get on the other boards/threads.  Most of us here are trying to lose pounds ranging from those last few to still a whole bunch to go, but it isn't a "weight loss" thread per se (even though we are in the Tri'ing for Weight Loss Forum).  We are just some ladies who are trying to expand our range (not our waistlines) of activity and accomplishment in the world of triathlon.

Most of the people who post on the other forums would tell us that we are not ready yet for a HIM.  To that, we say "Phooey!"  We may not be ready today, but we are working toward that goal.  I think of the HIM and IM races planned for next year, Kate (AZ Sunshine) and I have the first one - California 70.3 on March 27, 2010.  But Debb (IdealMuse) is doing IM Wisconsin next year and if Steffi (Joblin), Kiri and Lisa (Losta) have said which ones they are doing, I don't remember (sorry).  But we all have done and are still planning sprint and olympic distance races.

I love this thread and I love the fact that we are a nice, small, congenial group - with definitely room for two more.   Jump right in.

Eagleman is June 13th, 2010!! AARRRGGGHHHH!!!!!!

I think I was shaking when I registered online!! Then I got a bit nauseous after I received confirmation! LOL!

Once I get clearance I'm going to be psyched because I'll be going up to Maine for Thanksgiving weekend to visit my mother and she'll have me up every morning early (making me coffee, god love her!) and we'll be run/walking with her dogs for a good amount of time so that should jump start my working out again!

I'm looking forward to keeping up my training logs and comparing notes with everyone else in the months to come!

Hooray!  We have new friends!  Welcome ladies.  I think you will like our little group.  As you probably read, these gals dragged me out of my OWS death spiral last week.  They are the BEST!

Here is my quick overview of our little group.  Ladies, let me know what you think of my assessments.

Leah is the leader of the group.  She is tough, hard working, and actually does some strength training.  In my mind, she is the little one of the group.  (Lawyer)  CA70.3 on the books/IM possibilty

Ideal Muse/Debb - I consider her to be brave, goal oriented and conscientious. (sp?)  She is on a weight loss/IM mission!  (Artist)   Deciding on summer HIM with IMWI scheduled for Sept

Losta/Lisa - She is our gadget girl.  If there is anything you want ot know about bikes, watches or trainers, she is your gal.  She loves a challenge too!  (occupation?  I'm guessing something business or technical related.)  OLY scheduled/Timberman HIM late summer

Kiri - She is a swimmer/biker with weightloss on the mind.  She is taking her training very seriously ready to head into next season strong.  (Artist)  Deciding on race schedule for summer.  HIM is coming!

Joblin/Stef - She is the interesting jet setter who goes from exotic location to excotic location.  She is toying with a IM but hasn't committed.  Probably on holiday now.  (pilot or flight attendant? not sure)  Still deciding on races.

Me - AZSunshine/Kate - Hmmm. . . Lots of drama lately . . . Suck at swimming . . . loves red wine . . .  (non practicing attorney)  CA70.3 scheduled, probably another HIM during summer, might consider full IM if training goes well

I am anxious to respond to everyone's photos and posts but I got home from work at 10:30 pm tonight.  I'll catch up more soon.  No work out today b/c of work function.  Had to skip my swim lesson.  UGH!  Heading to the tri store tomorrow to tri on wetsuits.

Kate - I loved the summary of all of us.  However, I don't really think of myself as the leader.  I think at different times each of us has had the most or best to contribute on a topic or angle or whatever.  I think of it as "shifting leadership," although leadership isn't really the right word there.  Hopefully you get the idea.

In any event, I think we are a great group of ladies.

Yeah, nice summary. Conscientious? I think that's the first time I've been called that. Lol. Interesting.

Off the the pool this afternoon for me. Then probably my last pumpkin run tonight. Root Canal Tomorrow (ugh) and packet pick-up for the HC15k. Excited for my first running only race! It's going to be so wierd not having to haul so much crap to a race. Doesn't feel the same. Just lace up and show up!

Any Plans for Halloween Everyone?

Halloween morning I'm doing a 5K with a coworker. Unfortunately I'll have to walk it because I can't start running again until November 17th. But I'll be happy just to be out and walking, I'm hoping plenty of people will either be running in costume or out in costume. Other than that not a thing planned. I won't be giving candy out because every time my doorbell rings my 2 geriatric Jack Russells go nuts and I don't want them to have a heart attack!! LOL Saturday night I'll go down to the boyfriend's place for the night.

Tomorrow I'm off as I'm meeting my Jersey girlfriend and her family for their annual pilgramage to the Lancaster, PA outlets for some early holiday shopping and eating. Going to try to get a fast walk in tomorrow morning with the dogs to let them sleep it off and get some exercise in. I'm SO excited to be going shopping tomorrow! Which probably means I'll find bupkiss, but that' ok..the only thing I really want right now is a decent transition bag. Any recommendations?

I have a Pumpkin run scheduled for tonight and then I plan to run to Crossfit tomorrow morning.  And then probably a walk Saturday morning, which will not get me to 100%, but close.  My son and his family are coming down tomorrow night so I will have the kids for part of the day on Halloween and then they will be back to do some trick-or-treating in my neighborhood.  (For some reason, I have to share them with their other grandparents!)  I was thinking about doing a 5K race Saturday morning with the 5 YO grandson, but we will probably just hang out at the house.

And NO eating Halloween candy.  Just don't eat the first one and it will all be OK.  It is the first one that kills you.

And yes, running races are simple.  Lace up and show up pretty much sums it up.  I think you will do terrific in your race, Debb, and can't wait to hear about it.  Sorry to hear about the root canal.  Those aren't fun (or cheap).

Tomorrow I was invited to an early mat pilates class and then have my aqua aerobics. Later I am going to check out the NYC marathon expo for a bit. Saturday we have a shopping trip to New Jersey to check out the new REI and also visit the Campmor store. Then home for trick or treaters, my dog Cooper has a halloween date with some neighborhood girls, they will both be bumble bees.

Somewhere in there I'll run, bike and or swim.

Warning . . . Chatty Post!

Hey gang!  I have my big race tomorrow.  I am doing another Splash n Dash at 5:00 pm AZ time.  I thought this race would be a 1000m OWS and I trained accordingly.  Today I looked at the website and it said the race was only 750m!!  Hooray!!  I feel so much more confident than last week.

I went to the tri store today and rented a wetsuit.  It fits much better.  It is the same size but a different cut.  They gave me a Mens Large "Nineteen" suit.  It cost $45 from today until Tuesday.  If I want to buy it will be about $200.  This is the same size I own but they said my brand (2xu) has a very narrow cut.  I tried the Woman's XL but it was way too tight.  (I don't have a waist!

I took the wetsuit for a test run tonight and swam about 1200 meters.  I'm glad I did a practice round.  I wasn't comfortable in it at first but it got much better as I swam.  The key will be to keep my heart rate down.  I also tried to swim with my eyes closed again today but I must have been distracted on my sighting.  I ran into lane lines and the wall a couple times.

Please send me good vibes tomorrow!  I don't think I could handle another horrible swim.

 - - - - - - - - - -

Keeley - I'm glad you are joining us.   I think this will be a fun training training adventure.  Take your time as you are healing.  If you push too hard too soon it won't be good for you!  I love outlet days.  I'm a bargain shopper.  I have no tips on transition bags for you.  I just use a tote bag.

Leah - I can call you the leader if I want too.  Laughing  However, if it makes you more comfortable, I will call you the group organizer.  If you remember back to the start of this, the NUTSO group was your awesome idea.  Have fun with your grandma time.

Debb - I'm glad I gave you chuckle with your description.  I like Conscientious!  I can't wait to hear about your run.  You worked so hard training for it!  I think you are doing to do well.  I have one tip for you as a former run only event person.  Don't start out too fast!  On the "run only" events it is easy to get caught up in the excitement of the start.  Love your race pictures!  You look like a total jock!

Lisa - Im so excited you are coming out my way.  Let me know your dates so I can make sure I'm around.  I think I'm going to take you on our Fort McDowell ride if it works out for you.  It is close to Scottsdale so it will be convenient.  Are you a spa gal?  There are also some great spa and resorts around if you like to be pampered!

Kiri - Congrats on the weight loss!  I think your lbs are going to start falling off as hard as you are training.  Great race pics!  Thanks for sharing.  I read your race report while looking at your photos.  You won your age group in the swim!  I should have you come down and give me some lessons!  When are you going to pick a race?  Did you decide on the cross country bike tour?

Kate - Here are some photos of me.  I'm the hot one.  Ummm well, the older hot one.  Umm well, the older hot female one!  http://swimbikerunwine.blogspot.com  This the link to my HIM training blog.  You will recognize some of my entries as things I posted here.  I think I'm the only one writing now but at least you will be able to see me and my training buddies.  Besides Peter (bro-in-law) and Suzanne (swimmer/tri star) there are two other guys signed up for the race.  (Derrick and Kyle)  Hopefully we will get them up there soon.

 - - - - - - - - - -

I think the way the NUTSO races now line up are as follows.  I'm only missing Kiri's race.  I'm debating adding another OLY and another HIM into my schedule.  I can train all year round here so I am researching my options.

March 27th - CA 70.3 - Kate and Leah
June 13th - Eagleman 70.3 - Keeley
July - TBD - Debb
August 22 - Timberman 70.3 - Lisa
September 12 - IM Wisc - Debb

 - - - - - - - - - -

Have a good night!

Good luck in the Splash and Dash Kate!

Debb-I had a root canal and then 10 years later it had to be redone. It didn't hurt as much as I thought it would.

Here is the transition bag I have:
http://www.trisports.com/tyrtrbapa.html

BT members get discounts at trisports

Leah do you go to a crossfit class or do it on your own?

Good going Kiri!

As Kate said in her post I am going to AZ in March. I will stay in Scottsdale and Tucson. I will be attending the Tri-Fest in Tucson March 5-7. One of the reasons we are going to Tucson is that we have been looking for places to eventually retire to. Tucson keeps coming up on every list as one of the top places in the country.

I hit "send" too fast on my earlier post.

Debb - good luck on your race tomorrow.

Lisa - I go to a Crossfit gym.  I really lucked out with this because I found them the first week they were starting and got in for $75 per month.  It is now $135 per month and I have heard of Crossfit gyms being much higher.  I got grandfathered in at the $75 per month rate and they guarantee that whatever rate you join at, it won't go up by more than $5 per year.  In the early days, again, when they were just starting out, I was the only one or one of two in my classes.  It was like getting personal training for $75 per month.  Now, there tend to be between 6-10, which is still pretty good.  For instance, today there were six people.

I only use a transition bag when I use my wetsuit and I only have used my wetsuit about four times.  I did in the last tri (for all the good it did me).  Anyway, I rather like my transition bag, but I don't think the company is around any more.  It was transitionbag.com.   Otherwise, I just use a smallish backpack.

Kate - thanks for the summary and race list and such.  It was such a help to see all the previous info synthesized into one post.

Have I hit all the previous messages?  I think my memory has given out.  Anyway, jump in Keeley and Laurie.

Oh yes.  I am at 93.3% for the Pumpkins, but 97% of the month is gone.  I don't think I am going to get above 95%.  For next month I am doing 40 sessions of swim/bike/run.  That is exactly what my training plan calls for, but if I miss a swim session, which is VERY difficult to make up, I will be able to make it up with either bike or run.

OK.  That's it for me.  Have a good weekend everyone.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN !!!!

Random me stuff: They added 70.3 in Racine WI! It was an existing race that IM took over, and If I'm right I THINK that might be the race the IM group did last summer, so if they do it again that might be the 70.3 I end up doing it's on July 18th. Also, my kitty swimsuit arrived. It mostly fits expect a little bit of back-fat squish, but it looks better then my old one (sucks the rolls in) so I might wear it for Halloween/swim class tomorrow. Also My weight is down so next weigh in looks good. 192ish today... hopefully it holds.

Keel - Have a fun walk5k! I'm sure it will be tempting to run, but gotta keep the body happy for bigger and better things. I used to live in Lancaster for about 6 years or so. Nice place to visit... boring place to live!

Leah - Have fun with the kiddos. Having to share doesn't seem like much fun, but ahhh guess that's how you keep happy families.

Lisa - Hope you find something good at the expo I found an awesome Sugoi Bike jacket at the mini-expo today when I picked up my packet. A $190 jacket for $40! The root Canal wasn't bad but I did find out they have to re-do an old one... nothing that was my fault just an unfortunate thing. I look forward to hearing about your Arizona adventures.

Kate - Good Luck with the swim. Just take it easy and work on relaxing more then racing it. I'm really hoping it goes well for you this time. How did I manage to miss the fact you had a blog? Great photos too. Nice to place faces with names. Does the new suit have sleeves or no?

Kir - Love the pics too. Yeah we could use lessons from you.

Okay that's it for me I'll check in on Monday with a race report.

Kate's Splash N Dash Race Report

I started the day feeling much more confident.  Last night's practice swim in the new wet suit felt good.  I have a full sleeve "19" wetsuit.  I think it gave me a little confidence boost.  It also helped that it was a 750m swim v. the 1000m swim I was expecting.  I had a very busy work day so I didn't have time to obsess about the race.  At 4:00 I packed up and went down to the race.

It was a cold day for Arizona.  Maybe 65 or 67?  Usually when it hits 70 degrees here we all have our sweaters on.  So this type of weather was not idea.  I couldn't imagine what the water tempature was going to be.

My Bro-in-law got to the race before me.  He was only 1 of about 30 people!  We were still a little early so maybe others would be coming.  The race organizers talked about how the weather might be keeping people away today.  By the time we were to start the race, we had 52 people participating.  Unheard of where we live, but I dug it!  It turns out that it was a no chip race this time.  They were going by our bib numbers.  This should be interesting!

I looked at the water and got a huge pit in my tummy.  The buoys were so far apart!!  How could that be 750m?  It looks like WAY more than that.  It was again a triangle format.  I can't believe how far they are!  I had to stop looking b/c I could feel my heart rate going up.

As we started to get our wetsuits on an older lady befriended us.  She was CHATTY!  Turns out she has done ironman races and does about 15 marathons a year.  She talked about how she was the last on across the finish line in IMAZ.  She didn't care one bit!  It was all about the finish for her.  I was so impressed with her attitude.  It turns out she is a slow swimmer too who is doing the same race I am doing on Sunday.  I think her chatting helped me get through my prerace jitters.  She didn't stop!  It was cute though.  I think she was happy to be with some folks.

Soon it was race time and we were to get into the water.  It was cold!!  I recognized some faces from last week and made some small talk with some folks while we were getting used to the water.  A few of us self described slow people talked about where to go and when to start.  So far so good.  No panic yet.

The next thing I knew the horn blew.  Deep breath . . . Here I go.  For a brief moment I flet a little uneasy.  Not getting into the flow but that soon passed.  I tried to get a little chant going in my head.  "1, 2, 3 . . . Breathe!  1, 2, 3 . . . Breathe!"  I decided I would try to sight about every 10 strokes.  I realized that I wasn't freaking out!  I am doing this!  I take my first sight and put my head right back in the water and didn't skip a beat.  Hey, I just passed a guy!   "1,2,3 . . breathe!"  The next thing I know I am at the first buoy!  How did that happen?  I am doing this!!  As I am going I see some folks floating on their backs.  I haven't had to flip over yet.  Hooray!  As I am swimming I realize the longer I keep stroking the faster I will get done.

As i reach the final stretch I got pretty emotional again.  This week I'm emotional for a different reason.  I totally concurred my fear!  I didn't give up and worked to get over my issue.  Pretty cool.  As I started to walk up the boat dock and man was right behind me.  He asked the race official "Are we the last ones out?"  AND the race dude said "NO!"   I can't believe it!

I quickly went to the transition and got my shoes on.  The the running begin!  I was about a mile into the run when I saw my bro-in-law coming the opposite way (We had to do two loops)  He said "YOU DID IT!"  It must have been obvious b/c he was still on his first lap.

I was on cloud nine.  I knew I was still back of the pack but I was SO OK with that!  When I finished Peter told me that I was only a couple of minutes behind him!!  He thinks I really cut a ton of time of my swim!

Here are the results.

Today:               750m swim and a 4k in 43:46
Last week:        500m swim and a 4k in 45:52

I was trying to calculate the numbers.  I don't know how this time can be possible though.  It is pretty darn good if you consider the time includes the swim, transition of getting my wetsuit off, AND a 2.5 mile run!  What ever.  I'm not going to over think it.  I'll take it.

I drove home with a new attitude.  I can do this!  This is a whole new ball game now!  I can do this!  Now that I know I can do the swim, I can start thinking about how to become faster and stronger v. thinking about surviving the swim.  Thank you all for your support and tips.  I think I used a little bit from everyone to do this!

Now I'm really looking forward to my race on Sunday.  (1/2 mile swim/ 17 mile bike/ 3.1 mile run)  I'll be racing in the Athena division and I will be ok no matter where i finish.  (at least for this race . . . )

Thanks again ladies!

Awesome Kate!
It only gets better, faster, easier, and more fun from here...

Good racing to everyone this weekend!

I will be partying as Alexys from Dynasty tonight at our BoobToob Blowout halloween extravaganza - costumes, potluck, board games, and spiked cider... and probably one or two pieces of candy... But have to get my last pumpkin run in first - good thing it's short and sweet cause I gotta lotta tidying and shopping to do.

Yeah Kate!!!! Congrats and GREAT job!!

I went shopping Friday to the Lancaster, PA outlets and got quite a few things for ME and only one thing for my Christmas shopping. But I had a great time!!

Yesterday I did a small 5K at an area high school and was supposed to walk it but of course got caught up in the moment and did my interval running. I tuned in to how I was feeling and told myself I'd just run for the first 10 minutes then walk..I got to the first mile marker and was coming in under 14:00..not bad considering I haven't run in a month! I still felt pretty good so I kept it up...since I run really slow I figured my running couldn't truly count as "vigorous" activity..LOL. I know probably not one of my brighter moments but it felt so good! I finished in 44:10 so I was happy. I worked on picking up my pace during my walks and kept the running slow and light. The best part is that they had random drawings for prizes and I won a free pair of shoes from the local running store!! SWEET!! The first place finishers male/female overall won a free pair of shoes and trophies, so this was pretty cool. As they started running through the age group winners they called the 2nd place female 30-39 and I won!! My co-worker and I were hysterical laughing because they called my name and my time!! LMAO!! Seriously?? There were only 2 maybe 3 30-39 year old females in this 5K?? So I won a trophy AND a free pair of shoes like the overall winners!! GREAT RUN!!

Today I'm hanging out watching tv on this rainy November morning. Going to figure out my meals for the week and go to the grocery store tomorrow and hopefully get plenty of fruit...apparently my super human power is the ability to eat endless amounts of chocolate and not get sick...not sure Marvel Comics would make a comic of me and that's really not the superpower I'd envisioned for myself but I need to go detox now!

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Kate - I am soooooo happy for you.  Nothing like staring down your demons and coming out ahead.  Your story was wonderful to read.

KiwiJDRPH - 2009-11-01 8:18 AM Yeah Kate!!!! Keely - I know how it is when it just feels good, feels right, and you just keep going.  It doesn't sound like you did anything that would make your doctor cranky and you got a trophy and a new pair of shoes.  Sounds like a terrific race.

Hopefully everyone survived Halloween and now back on track to RUN MORE and EAT LESS.  (Keely and Laurie - that is kind of our weight loss/training motto.

I got in my first run of November, which was 1:08, but not the 1:30 my coach had planned so I have 22 minutes I need to make up tonight.  But, I did my usual trick of running to a restaurant and got a delicious omelet (actually 1/2 omelet since Chuck and I split the breakfast) and a ride home.  No bread or potatoes, just fruit with the omelet.

I know Debb said she wouldn't be reporting in until Monday to talk about her race, but I'm anxious to hear how she did.  15K is a serious distance.

What are the next races we have planned?   I have a 10K planned for December 5.  It is a local race - the South Pasadena Tiger Run.  The 5K is very flat and fast and the 10K is hilly and brutal.  And because it is a local race, the less serious runners do the 5K, leaving only the real tigers (pun intended) to do the 10K.  Which in turn means that I have a very good chance of coming in last.  Two years ago I was last and last year I was next to last.  I am in better running shape this year and should be even more so and am hoping to beat at least TWO people !!!!   Ha ha ha.  My training program has just started incorporating hills and I will certainly need those to do this race.

I might do a Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot with my grandson, but the closest one is about 25 minutes away and am not sure if that will work out for us.

How about everyone else?

Hey gang!  I just wanted to check in and let you know I survived my race today.  It was by far the hardest course I've competed on to date.  There were a ton of hills on both the running and the bike course.  UGH!  I'll share my race report later.

BTW - I won the Athena division.  I am waiting for race results b/c my fear is that I might have been the only one signed up.  I got a cool trophy though.

Talk to you all soon and catch up on everyone's posts.  I'm taking a rest day tomorrow.  I'm spent!

I don't have any races planned as the race schedule here is sparse and run/cyclocross oriented during the winter months. The first tri of the season is in april - but i'm going to try to find someplace warm to travel to for an earlier oly (maybe). I might do a jan/feb run race, but focus for now is still all run all the time.
