Phwa.. long day.  2800 yard swim (with 15 minutes of balance drills), 52 mile bike ride (in 25-30 mph winds mostly cross and headwind) with a 5 mile brick.  Core workout for later tonight.  Not as tired as I should be, but still a long day.

Well, back from the beach.   I did PR by 3:00 for the distance, but I didn't reach my sub 1:50 goal.  Off by 1:04 - all lost in the last 3.1 miles.  Grrrrrr. . .

Awesome job on the PR!  We athletes are a funny bunch, goals and PRs sometimes can cause such frustration.

Hi All!
I just started week 6 of Jorge's Winter Cycling Plan (bike power improvement ) and today had the 2nd of four 20 min power test.  5 weeks ago I recorded a 20 min power average of 204, I was dying at the end and could barely hold 195 watts.  But I was focused on running and riding was only to get some time in when I could.  Today was so the opposite, after a 20 min WU I decided that I'd start out at 210-215 and see where it would go from there.  After 5 min I was working but actually just starting to get into the zone.  Next 5 min I increased the RPMs and started pushing 220 and was still feeling ok, 10 min avg was 214.  For the next 5 min I bumped up two gears pushing lower RPMs at 220-225.  Last 5 min I was down shifted a gear and increased the RPMs for 225-230 pushing it hard and ended it with a 219 average.  Still had plenty in the tank too, in hindsight I probably should have started it at 215-220 or so.  So in 4 weeks of not missing one of the bike WO I've increased my 20 MP 15 watts.

Thurs or Friday I have the 5 min MP test to do, 5 weeks ago I pushed a 233w 5 min average suffering the whole way. I was basically doing that on the last 5 min segment today, looking forward to that WO!

Oh, so the moral of the story is: stay on the training plan!

That is so true Donto!  Consistency is the key and jumping back in even if you get off course.   I think a lot of times folks will get discouraged if they fall off the routine for a week then throw in the towel.  Don't give up weeks and weeks of training for one or two bad weeks.  Even if you have to back up a bit on the training - just jump back in and get started!!

My legs are finally functional again so I'll be biking today!  Huray for getting back out there!!

Man, sometimes training is one step forward, two steps back!  Got to get outside for a ride yesterday, only to get sick on the ride (I got gluten in my body somehow b/c that was definitely celiac sick) - had to cut the ride short at an hour.  I guess right now I'm at Kati's training 0 Kati's gut 2 (I had a stomach bug on Tues. so no training)  Lets try today .. . .

I don't know why, but I had a really crappy workout this morning.  My nutrition has been real good lately and I've been getting in great workouts with only a little soreness this week.  I got up early to swim before work and by the time I got there, I didn't feel much energy.  I jumped in the pool anyway and it was a little colder than normal (maybe it was my imagination).  I started swimming and just felt "blah."  I couldn't seem to catch my breath and started doing a lot more backstroke than normal.  I ended up cutting my workout short.  Do you guys ever have days like this?

To answer your questions:
1.  I'm very pleased with my training so far.  I can run farther and faster than I thought.  I used to dread long bike rides but now they seem to fly by.  I feel great about the way I look and I'm losing weight still.
2.  My greatest triumph thus far is running in my first 5K and finishing it faster than I expected!
3.  My biggest challenge is the pool.  Finding the time and/or motivation to get to the gym and swim.  Also, the mechanics of swimming are so much more complex than I thought.

I'll start with the easy one, greatest triumph & challenge so far this season was the 1/2 marathon.

Training is progressing well, I should state Bike training is progressing well now, run training peaked in Feb and more or less is n maintenance mode.  Swim is going to get a great big kick in the @ss when I get back from vacation!  OWS will be starting now that the super cold winter is over with and the water temps are finally getting back up to sleeveless wetsuit range.

It's been a while since I have posted.  I am still here--just kind of quiet on my end.

1.  My training is going ok.  I am trying to keep up with my schedule but I feel that I have fallen a little behind.  I really need to step it up!

2.  Biggest triumph has been running 2 miles straight.  May not seem like a lot--but it is for me.

3.  Biggest struggle has been consistency with training.  I am trying to balance my training time and schedule and it's been difficult.

I guess I should answer too!  I am o-k, I was doing great then last week was a taper for a my half marathon and some stomach bug has me laid out this week, I have totaled 2.15 h. biking this week - total.  NO running, no swimming.  Just feeling cruddy day after day!

My greatest triumph the season is bumping 10 watts on the bike.  I am keeping up with folks outside better and now finding it pretty easy to avg. 150 w. on an hour course in low z3.  Yay!

My challenge is really balancing my health.  With celiac I am kinda constantly watching my body wondering when it will give in, I guess the answer was this week : (  Rest now, back at it next week!

Biggist victory was BQ my 2nd ever stand alone mary in January.

Training is going alright.

Challenge is getting the vollume up while increasing speed with some sore calf issues.

So I got to a real pool yesterday, here are the results:
6x 50 yards average 51 seconds.
20x 100 yards average 1:54 (fastest 1:49, slowest 2:01)
All out sprint 25 yards after workout was 24 seconds.

Not as good as I had hoped, but better than this time last year.
Er nm I checked I guess I am not any faster.  Swimming sucks.

Bright and early tomorrow morning I leave for camp.  Our Middle School takes the top 50 sixth graders to a week-long Science camp up on Oklahoma called Camp Goddard.  We stay in cabins, hike, fish, canoe, and dig for fossils.  It's my third year going and every year I can't believe they pay me to do it.  This year I'm going to try to shoe-horn some runs into our busy schedule because there's no way I'm going to swim in that cold lake water and biking is out of the question.  My tri is coming up in less than a month and I hope this week doesn't knock me off track.

Hi everyone,

I am in desperate need of a bike.  I don't have a huge budget (around $300) and when I went to the bike store, I almost had a stroke when the salesperson was trying to sell me a $1000 bike.  Can anyone provide suggestions?  I also don't want to purchase a bike solely for the sprint trialthon.  I want to have a dual purpose bike that I can use for the race but also for using the paths and trails around my house.

Thanks! I hope everyone is still training away!

Your entry level racing bikes are around $800 to $1600.  However, you can complete a tri on a $65 mountain bike.  There was one guy at Boise HIM on a mountain bike.  He was going around 14 mph and all the road bikes were passing him at 18 to 22 mph.  But none of the road bike folks will be riding their bikes on trails.  It kind of comes down to what you want to do with your bike and how important speed is.

I would say if you are looking for a dual purpose bike for sprints and trails than an entry level mountain bike (much cheaper than entry level racing bikes) OR a hybrid bike will suit your needs.  I started out on a beginner road bike (right at $600), but every time I upgrade I am able to sell my old bike so I see it as an investment.  Having said that I still wish I had a mountain bike, even a cheapo one to get out on the trails every once and a while!!

Another great place to check is craigslist.  Ebay bikes are too expensive and you have to buy sight unseen, but we have had good luck with craigslist - just be careful!

Kind of bummed out here.  I have a minor calf pull that is not rehabbing well, so I am going a full week with no run and then well build up walk run from there for 2-3 weeks.  The timing really sucks as the next two months are supposed to be peak IM distances.  Not sure if I will even be able to race and even if I can race, not looking to PR or anything.  Very sad.

Baowolf, bummer to hear about the calf, I had the same issue in Dec.  If you can get a massage.  Does it bother you riding?  Mine did not.

Hello all,
Back from a great family vacation.  Drove up to Chicago so my daughter could go to the American Girl store for her B-day and did some sightseeing.  Also stopped by Indianapolis to visit some friends (use to work there) and did some more sightseeing.  Caught a cold and had to drive back feeling god-aweful with every northern spring breaker heading down to FL.  Suffered through the weekend and today am feeling about 90%.  I'm hoping that I can get back on the training wagon this evening with an easy run per the training plan.

I'm back from camp and getting back into the groove.  Even though I took my running shoes, I was so tired (and busy) every morning, I couldn't get in any running.  I did do a lot of hiking, though.  I weigh 30 pounds less than I did last year at camp.  Keeping up with 6th graders isn't as hard as it used to be!
