I have a wheel question for you guru's!

I'm currently shopping for another real wheel (700) and cassette for the trainer. I currently have a decent pair of Xero wheels, low flange hubs, and an ultegra cassette. I also have new GP 4000 tires on it that I'd like to last.

And a trainer is going to burn these puppies up!

I asked around and about the cheapest 10speed cassette I can find is $85. I still need a wheel (I have tubes and old tires). Can someone help me out? Any thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?

I thought of robbing the rear wheel and cassette off of the old walmart bike that's sitting out back, but it's only a 9speed. How messed up will that be? Should I suck it up and buy one that's right? Go cheap?

Or should I go ahead and look for a nice set of HED race wheels, buy up, switch tires on the Xero, and commence to trashing it that way?

I'd really rather quit trading out tires all the time b/c all I'm doing is burring the sidewals of the new GPs.

Someone's commented before on ordering a cheap wheel from Nashbar for the trainer.  You can check there or maybe ebay.

You can find new shimano 105 cassettes on ebay in the 50 dollar range.

They make trainer tires.

Edge 705 is an awesome gadgit. I have mine mounted on the inside of my aerobars. I wanna mount an aero bottle there, but not sure where to put the edge. Where is yours mounted Mark?

I used the stem attachment. It was part of the kit.

Nashbar had a rim for around $70, probably good enough for the trainer (if everything is the right size).  They also have cassettes, but I didn't really look hard at those.  You would have to buy the rim, cassette and tires seperatly.

sand101 - 2010-08-05 1:21 AM Powertap works!  I threw a tire on and went out at 10 tonight (complete darkness on the road) to give her a whirl.   A massive 3:20 long workout (as in three minutes LOL). 199 average watts.  Max 661.  Watch out Cavendish!

I just got off the phone with the shop that is going to build my wheel.  They said a week to 10 days depending on when things get ordered/delivered.  I'm pretty stoked!

That's awesome.  keep us posted, we expect pictures upon delivery.

I'm going to switch gears to running:

I'm thinking of getting a pair of flats for my shorter runs and some speed work, and just getting a new pair of supported Brooks for my longer runs.  Has anyone tried the flats for shorter runs.

I think there is something to the barefoot running (in that it builds the foot muscles), but I'm not ready to go barefoot, so I've heard flats can be good for this too.  Thoughts?

Not to bust your bubble pilot, but go slow if you change shoes. Give your feet time to adjust.

I have been running in the heavier Brooks Beast for about 2yrs now. I tried to go down to Brooks Adrenaline's to shave weight, but that was a HUGE mistake. Just the 8mi I did in those shoes, killed my feet.

I did 2 separate 4mi runs in them, and felt like I ran 10 afterwards. I'd say try them, but be cautious if you're using supporting shoes.

PS - Is it just me, or is everyone else dumping water out of their shoes after their runs? This morning's 6, I was ringing water out of my socks...

Personally I just like to have one pair of shoes that fits well and just go running.  I do some tempo and fatlek runs but that's about as creative as I get.

And yes... my shoes are drenched.  I got a pair of moisture wicking socks last fall.  I just bought one pair because was pretty skeptical.  They're fantastic so I bought more and that's all I run in.

80 mile ride with 5K run brick today. Kicked the crap outta me. I can hardly walk up the stairs. Cry

also got some really bad news about my training partner today. He's a great guy, and is the one who initailly challenged me to try IM.  We've been training for B2B together for months. This week his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. He's pretty crushed as you would imagine. He's thinking of maybe dropping the race. It's early though and they don't have all the results from the docs back or know what the treatment protocol will be. He asked my opinion and I didn't know what to say. My 5 year old has leukemia, so i sort of know what he's dealing with, but we are almost thru with treatment, he and his wife will just be getting going with their treatment right in the meat of our IM training build. Selfishly, I don't want to lose my training buddy, but damn, he might need to drop it. Whatcha think?

I do all my runs in NB 905s, which aren't a flat but pretty close.  Before I went to NB, I did all my runs in Asics Speedstars which are a flat.

If you do decide to start using flats, get fitted by a shop.  Then yes start out with shorter runs.

I have a pair of the VFF, which most people do their "so called" barefoot running.  I don't like running in them, but I do my cross-train/weights in them.

Yeah, I was thinking of starting really short, like maybe a mile or 2 at most (probably on a treadmill, or used at a track for some speed work).  Start with my shorter runs leading up to my HM in December, and build up to the 3-5 mile runs in the flats.  I probably would not run much more than that in them, unless they were just really comfy and I adjusted really well.

I ran 5.5 on Saturday, and was feeling decent about my sweat rate about mile 4 (as I wasn't drenched yet).  When I finished the last 1.5, i was soaked from head to toe.  My socks and shoes were soaking wet.  Mosture wicking socks only do so much....  If I had to run much more, i would have formed some blisters.

See if the 10 speed cassette fits the Walmart wheel before getting a new rim?  9 and 10 speed typically use the same wheel.

Look on slowtwitch and here for used cassettes.  I got a nice 9 speed one for $15 (retail was way more).

I've never had a trainer eat my tires, but I wouldn't put great tires on there, either.  Some $10 super cheapies should do for a season.

Tapering question.

I have been hitting it hard for quite a while, including this weekend.  Legs are quite sore.  Mountain Lakes is Saturday.

Most of my fatigue issues are from biking - I have really hit that hard.  Right now my plan is for my last ride to be Tuesday evening - tri group ride.  Maybe a very short ride on Thursday to make sure the bike is ready for the weekend.  Last real runs on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Good swims on Monday, Wednesday, and a short (1000yd) one on Thursday.

Sound reasonable?

If my bike is setup for a 10sp, would running a 9sp on it really matter that much? Or does the bike even know? I'm finding a good number of used 9sp cheaper than 10sp...

Oh, and I went to Bob's bikes and picked up a couple of their junk tires for $1 each. I figured I would put those on the wheel before trashing them on the trainer. For whatever reason, my trainer just about melts the tires off. There's a pile of black shavings when I'm done, even after just an hour.

I'm no expert, but looks good to me.

Looks like Thurs is your last real activity, rest day on Fri, and "competition slaughter" on Sat.

Two bike rides, two easy runs, and two easy swims. As long as you aren't lung busting and killing yourself on them, you should be okay.

Kill myself on the tri-ride?  And with a new powertap to "test" on the hills?

Nah, not me.  I'd never swing for the fences on that ride...

Good Luck. I wish I could have come over, but I've got some CE stuff to knock out.
