I naturally run with a cadence of about 87bpm.  I know this because I've used a bpm analyzer to give me the bpm for all the songs on my computer and the ones that I love to run to are all in the 86-90 range!  I also have a Garmin Footpod and it has confirmed this.  I will vary my speed slightly by increasing cadence up to about 92, but I don't go higher than that.  If I want to be faster, I do increase my stride length, but I do it behind me, not in front.  Chi running taught me that!

I happen to have very short legs, so a high cadence feels very natural (always has).  It absolutely took me awhile before my CV system could handle the quicker turnover though, so I spent a lot of time getting my heart on board with it when I first started running again last year.  It might be worth noting that I also have a natural cycling cadence of about 90 rpm so it feels very comfortable for me.

I used to run with a cadence in the high 70's - low 80's and I felt fine all the time.  Since I ruptured my achilles I cannot stride like that anymore and I've been running in the low 90's.

Because I had to start from scratch after the injury it wasn't a hard transition and I like it a lot more and feel great.  I also feel like I can be faster than I was before.  I'm 5 months out from surgery but I've been having some great runs that were almost as fast as I ran before.

It also seems like my legs recover faster with the new cadence, although I may just be crazy.

The new pattern of foot fall sounds is harder to get use to than the new cadence.

Hey everyone. Sorry that I've been MIA as of lately. I've got pneumonia and am laying low. No training/exercise for at least 10 days. I've had to take time off of school and am basically on bed rest through Monday. I'm glad the doctor caught it and that I'm on a slow road to recovery.

Wishing everyone great training this week.

Sorry to hear that news.  Better to rest that then to keep damaging lung tissue.  Hope recovery is quick.

Rest up indeed, I had it a couple of times post chemo, and every time I tried to get back into things too early it put me a couple of steps back. Enjoy the chance to be "the sick one" while you have the chance

I suggested to my PT that he might want to let me run for my birthday present.....that's 2 weeks away.

Apparently he is unimpressed with my timelines.

Haha, I have alrady tried plying him with baked goods.

The rest of the staff ate them before he got a chance.

Dud has suggestesd scotch.

If they can graduate me for more than a month they get sushi.

Hmm ... what to bribe the PT with ... scotch might be the way to go ... if not that an expensive bottle of wine. Better yet, have him drink it before you leave, he may be more amenable to let you run if he's liquored up. Just a thought.

If I can't train or go to school the least I can do is give bad advice (or good, depending on how you look at it).

I'm getting the link for a couple articles.

Levaquin and other quinolone antibiotics have a high affinity to the less vascular tendons such as the achilles.  Combined with steroids, which I assume you are also taking these days is BAD NEWS on the tendons.  We suspect my leg issues are related to my being sick as a dog with the asthma flare last spring and having the 2 full weeks of high dose steroids with the 2 taper weeks of them as well as a week of levaquin.

Well crap, I'm off the training until the antibiotics are finished. Perhaps I need to lay low longer.

Thanks all!

I've been trying to break through that 150lb barrier since the end of last summer when I first got close and I'm THRILLED to finally be on the other side of it.  I still have a long way to go, but at least now I feel like I'm making good progress again.
