New user 22 Maple Valley, Washington | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Thanks for the suggestions. Turns out I can swim with the cast as it is mostly waterproof (just have to make sure to rinse out the pool water and dry it well). The bike is still giving me issues as I can't find a comfortable position. I can somewhat manage in the aero position with the bike on the trainer. I definitely won't be taking it out on the road. I might have to make some adjustments to the aero bars or just use the spinning bikes at the gym. Best advice I have is to not break any bones while in training. |

Member 262 | Subject: RE: Mapping the course with GPS smithe68 - 2012-02-15 6:45 PM I was just going to post this, figured I would keep it separate from my last post. Saturday I am going to drive the entire bike course, if I used my Timex GPS watch, and maybe my phone GPS, to map it out, would it be of any use? That would be great. Also, if possible, I would love to see a graph of what you get for Elevation. (like the ones that can be seen when you upload to Garmin Connect) I am not sure how accurate the course profile as it shows the "Max Elevation:2749" and yet none of the hills on the profile go above the 2700 ft line on the graph. |

I will do what I can, also it wont be until Sunday now, weather is going to be completely crappy tomorrow, with higher winds. Plan is to drive the course, then go run one loop of the run, since I have never done it. I can take cold, snow, rain or wind, or even a couple of them, it's supposed to be doing all 4 tomorrow. Not sure how accurate the Timex GPS watch is for elevation, guess we will see. |

Expert 1115 Spokane, WA | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread So not sure what other way to do this so I am uploading a screen shot. We did deviate just a touch to stop at Subway on a flat section of road, but that was just as you go up the ramp to get on US95. If you want more info, let me know and I will do what I can. There are some big stinking hills that seem to go forever! Could have missed other signs but I saw at least one that said 6% grade. Edited by smithe68 2012-02-19 5:33 PM |

Extreme Veteran 555 Carrollton, TX | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Thanks for posting, smithe! So folks, it appears that I am in the market for a new (tri) bike. I just returned from the LBS, where they're going to start the search. Question though - is there any reason I shouldn't go the tri bike route, assuming I can find one that fits me well and ride enough on it to be comfortable before 6/24? I've heard a lot of folks who primarily ride a tri bike that switch to a roadie for CdA... which makes me question if getting a tri bike for CdA is the right answer. Advice needed please! |

No problem, I hope it's of some use to everyone. On the tri bike question, I agree with everyone else, I don't even ride my road bike anymore around here, haven't found a good reason too. Plus why train on one type of bike and then race on another? Good luck on your search! |

The course was only just recently announced, I don't know that we have had weather decent enough to ride it yet this year with snow/ice and the gravel/dirt on the shoulder. I drove it Sunday, it wasn't bike able then, and a few weeks from now doesn't guarantee it will be any better. |

Member 140 Maple Valley | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I grew up in Spokane and definitly know the middle of March can be beautiful, or awful!!! I am keeping my fingers crossed!! I am on a team over here and there around about 15 of us doing the race and many of us are heading over there the 3rd week in May for a training camp. I really want to be able to ride the course before then. I am keeping my fingers crossed for an early spring. Would be great to have a big group heading over there for a ride. Bigger group = more visable!!!! |

Extreme Veteran 408 Spokane, Wa | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Kristine I have ridden the upper part of the course out by the casino a few times and it's great. However that is where the highway is 4 lanes with a large median and huge shoulder. What team are you on over there? |

Member 7 | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Be very careful putting weight or resistance on the injured hand, be it on your bike or while swimming. I broke my thumb in highschool and was told I could do "whatever was comfortable" with the cast on, but training (downhill skiing, duct taped onto my pole,) made it take twice as long to heal and also gave me limited range of motion after the cast was off. If you have any mobility in the cast, be sure you're not using the broken bones. Hope it heals quickly for you! |

Expert 1115 Spokane, WA | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread How was everyone's weekend? Any long workouts, good workouts, bad (hopefully none of these)? I managed my longest continuous swim ever of 1850 yds followed by my longest treadmill run of 8 miles. I am feeling really good about my training for my first IM. On a side note, more snow is coming our way and the mountains were pounded this past week/weekend. |

Expert 1535 Coeur D'alene, ID | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Thought I'd throw a couple pictures on here for you out of town folks. This is the IMCDA transition area yesterday during my run. Well, best intentions. File is too big to download. Will try to make it smaller but if not, there's about 5 inches of snow in the park and another 6-8 inches expected starting tomorrow night. Still no OWS in the lake. Happy training to everyone. New user 339 Salisbury | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Long Run also around 12 miles, last week I was a test subject at the Human Performance lab at the Dole research center run by Applachain State 2.5 hours of trainer 3 straight days...did not want to see the bike the rest of the week, I will get outside for 3 hour ride this week. Swim between 2000 and 3000 a couple times a week. I am not a fast swimmer, but seem to be enjoying it more so hopefully that translates to better, faster....OWS will start next month Keep up the good work all |
