I want in the weight loss challenge also. I have had an internal debate since I saw the original post, and finally had a "come to Jesus" talk with myself, and I need to do something.

I am 5'9" and weighed in this morning at 175. I need to lose 7, and I want to lose 15. It does not get me down to pre-marriage weight, but it does get me down to a comfortable racing weight. I can do it but have not been motivated to stick with it. I am by nature a very competative person, so a challenge might be what I need to be serious.

I have a very simple diet plan that I used to lose 37 pounds before I started triathlon. Its called the "don't eat like a pig diet." The basis is volume reduction. I don't need 4 pieces of pizza two is enough.  I don't need 6 Italian cookies and 3 canolies (well, let me think about the canolies).

It really hit me when I was told "as much as you exercise you shouldn't have any body fat." Instead I have more body fat now than before I did my first sprint and my training volume was a lot less.

OK, confession is over, am I in?

"Should I eat before training in the morning"
yes, your body needs fuel for a morning workout. You have not eaten for 8-10 hours at least. So your muscles are now Carb depleated. It you don't eat your body goes into starvation mode. Which means your body will look towards other areas for fuel. The place it will look is the muscles themselves. So you end up with a bad workout, lose muscle mass, eat more after, but because your body is in starvation mode, the muscles don't take in the calories, but instead store them as fat. Nothing good about this scenario.

Not sure how im going to do on the other challenge. Turned my ankle during my long run today and had to call my husband to pick me up. Been icing and compressing all evening. Have to see how it feels in the morning.
Fine with me, but you can't put up your weight in stones!

I don't weigh myself in stones.  I do however use kg, which is probably even more confusing...  Will figure something out I guess ;-)

Sorry to hear about your injury.  Hope it's nothing major.

Thanks.  It's not too painful, but I've been icing it loads and had it tightly strapped up all day.  Had to be on restricted duties at work today, which wasn't ideal, but it was that or walk round on a dodgy ankle for 8 hours and I really didn't want that.  Sadly the 10k I was planning for tomorrow is out, but hopefully I can get it back to strength without losing too much - only 3 weeks till my HM!

Went for the last swim of the year.  Puts my year total over 20,000 yards.  I'm sure it was much higher since several workouts were never posted.  Had to laugh, with all those yards I think only the last 1000 were the most productive.  Our pool is closed for the next 3 weeks so it is the ideal time to look into a coach to at least evaluate my stroke.

Pool was good though and feel more like I'm gliding instead of fighting for every inch.  Kicking stayed slow and I relied on my pull to get to the other end.  39 minutes of switch and zipper drills.   Tomorrow is the kick-off of the Challenges.  Good Luck everyone!!!

. . .

First time I sent it back and Garmin supposedly fixed it, now it did it again....ahhhhh, anybody have similar experience with their Garmin.

They make you send it back pay for shipping and then you wait.....

I've had a totally different experience with Garmin.  They have been tremendously helpful.  They sent me a new 305.  They sent me a new heart rate strap and let me keep the old one.  They sent me a new cadence sensor when mine quit working and they couldn't get it to reset.  I have owned mine since Feb.

Thanks Jackie that is good to know maybe I just need to push a little harder with them. I have not called them back the second time yet so this time I will need to push my case and see what they will do.

ernestov - 2011-12-31 8:19 PM It is impossible to use the sitbones with the current saddle you have, the saddles that use the sitbones are the ISM Adamo and the John Cobb's ones. I have an ISM on my tri bike because of the aggressive riding position and a John Cobb SHC-170 on my road bike that is some sort of a hybrid between a roadies saddle and a V-Flow (by Cobb too).

You have to try at a bike shop, usually they have 30 day return policies. I have taken advantage of these policies in the past to try and find the right one.

I use a Specialized saddle that I was measured for to ensure I am using my sitbones.  You can check them out as well.

I have a question: I cannot keep my legs from getting bigger and bigger. I'm starting to have a cyclist's body with the small weak upper body and tree trunk legs. The issue comes when I'm running, if I trend my speed gains for the three sports, my running speed is pretty much stagnant for the last two years and it has ALL to do with weight.

In November '08 my average weight for the month was 165.50lbs and this month my average is 182.5, that is a whooping 17 pounds that went all to my legs, because my upper body doesn't have any less/more than back then.

Should I just start dieting and lose the weight (I recognize that I did gain some fat too), or just suck it up and keep getting bigger?

My diet has a lot of protein (before you ask) that comes from lean sources. I hardly ever eat beef, I'm more on the side of chicken and fish. I only eat complex carbs and the non-heme type (vegetables). No rice, potatoes or bread. Ocasionally I eat pasta and pizza, it's my Italian side (hehe).

Ernesto,
Maybe you could try a run focus training phase and put your biking on maintenance?

Eat small amounts. Whole wheat toast and some nut butter is about all it takes (along with a cup of black coffee to get the stomach going).

Happy New Year everyone!!!

Time to sum up 2011. It was a great year! While the volume is a bit down from 2010, the IM Australia was the best thing I ever did in this 'department'. Thank you Ernesto and the gang for helping me to get there!

Yesterday was the last run in 2011 (15k) and now I'm looking forward to 2012.  As far as the 2011 volume, here it is:

Bike:224h 59m 39s  - 5397.62 KM
Run:179h 03m 44s  - 1796.12 KM
Swim:25h 25m 32s  - 59772 M

Sorry to "piggy back" on your post, but I normally eat a GU gel with some water before going out . I train at 5:30 am so anything that requires preparation is out. Is this enough? Most of my training is under 1 hr. I am assuming the lenght/intensity of the workout will have something to do with how much is enough, or not?

Today I had a good ride with the teammates, I got on my tri bike after ages of not using it, mostly because I put new chainrings (Rotor Q Rings). I rode strong and pulled on the front for pretty much the entire ride.

My totals for 2011 are:

2011 totals
Bike:172h 04m 14s  - 3281.99 Mi
Run:145h 47m 10s  - 1071.42 Mi
Swim:40h 54m 19s  - 151392 Yd

I had incredibly good races, I did the inaugural Ironman San Juan 70.3 (Puerto Rico) in the most incredibly beautiful venue for all three disciplines, you could see the bottom of the ocean and look at schools of fish while swimming, rode my bike along the coastline with palmtrees for a shade and ran the most brutally hilly course on cobbles in a city that is over 500 years old.

I also raced the inaugural Ironman Texas (full) and had a blast, Jackie went to cheer for me and I beat my best expectations for over half an hour, in hot and humid conditions (92F at the start of the marathon). The course was gorgeous too and a lot of my teammates were there cheering and others racing, two of them even qualified for Kona.

And all of you that were part of the old mentor group had breakthroughs, great races, a couple of little setbacks but I felt really happy to see you accomplish all of your dreams like Mark with his first Ironman, Jackie with her first triathlon (that I actually went to watch), Gabe having a stellar first half IM in stupid hot weather and later a full marathon, Barry doing his first Oly and feeling proud of it, Chris had an incredible first marathon, even when he thinks he didn't perform that well, Mitch seeing results after months of being stagnant, Jennie growing as an athlete while raising kids and moving to another state, etc.

I feel great pride on being part of this, and I hope whatever I told you was helpful, I learned myself a lot and used you for inspiration when I felt beaten with my work schedule, travel and family obligations.

I sincerely wish that all of you see your goals become reality during 2012, and remember that there is no such thing as "humble" goals, everybody has their own Everest, being the first Sprint, or a super fast Ironman; we all have true love for the sport and that is what we ALL share in this thread. And when I hear your enthusiasm because of your achievements I feel the joy of knowing that maybe I had a little something to do with it.

Happy New Year!

P.S.: Let's kick some butt in 2012!

One other thing re: trainer boredom. The last couple of weeks I've watched ride the divide (mtn bike race from Canada to Mexico) and spirit of the marathon (about 2005 Chicago marathon) and I would highly recommend both. They're streaming on Netflix.
