Good morning everyone. I hope your weekends were enjoyable.

I had a bit of a challenging run this weekend, as I continue to build for an HM in March. My long run last week, 8 miles, was great, quick and really just a nice run. This week I went about 1.5 miles further and it was a painful trudge. Slow from the start, I felt lethargic and just couldn't seem to get it together. I think that the build is taking it's toll on me, and it kinda surprised me, given the breakthroughs I had the past few weeks.

So, now the question for the group. I think I am going to cut back a bit this week, do some recovery, then pick up the build next week. Does that sound like a good idea, or does this sound more mental and I need to just run through it?

Thanks for any input you might have. Enjoy the week!

Do you log your training here or somewhere else? I don't see a link to your log at the bottom of your post, so I'm guessing either you have it set to keep your log private or only allow "friends" access... It would be easier to comment if I/we could take a look at what you've been doing.... But generally, I would say if your run feels like a painful trudge, then a little rest is probably in order... Have you been following a training plan? Have you been constantly building, or do you allow yourself some recovery days or weeks? The recovery part of training is important. To get stronger, we need to apply appropriate training stress followed by recovery. During that recovery, your body compensates for the applied stress, and comes back stronger. Without the recovery, the accumulated stress can eventually wear you down.

Here's a good article on the subject: http://www.racerxvt.com/article/recovery-training

OK, you should be able to see my logs now, I had a setting wrong. The plan I have been following is a modified Higden intermediate plan. 4 medium runs and 1 long run, with about a 10% build every week, mostly on long day. I think a few runs did not make it onto the log, but most everything is there. I have been biking a couple of days and swimming off and on as well. I have been building for about 5 weeks now, so I believe that a recovery week is in the cards for this week. I'm pretty sure I will cut back a bit this week, then pick it back up next week.

Thanks.

Chris - when is your half marathon? I would guess if your following a Higdon plan and are up to 9+ miles for your long run you're probably 4 or 5 weeks out from your race... is that about right?

There are a couple of things that I notice when I look back a month or so at your logs. One is that your long run has been building with no cut-backs. It looks like the Higdon plans cut back the distance of the long runs every 3 weeks or so, and call for a shorter distance long run at a harder effort. I also notice that your mid-distance runs haven't built up much over that time. So, I think there may be a couple of things contributing to your bad run over the weekend. One is, as you noted, that you may just need a bit of recovery. When I'm building long run distance, I usually cut back or hold steady the long run distance every few weeks. The other is that you should probably be trying to add some easy volume to some of those mid-week runs to help support your longer runs. Obviously you don't want to add too much volume all at once... Depending on how much time you have until your half marathon, you might consider holding your long run at 7-9 miles for a couple of weeks while you add a little volume to some of your shorter runs, then begin to add to your long run again.

Jenny, thanks, you are right the HM is about 5 or 6 weeks, early March. I guess I should have called it a modified Higdon plan, since I am not exactly following his plan. I just started adding midweek mileage, so that build has started. And long run builds are going to wait a couple of weeks for recovery. I do need to amp up the effort, but have been so happy with the "more and easy" method that I have been a bit wary of adding more speed. That said, I think the past 3 weeks have included two fartlek runs, which I kinda like. I believe that one day a week will continue in that vein as well. So, three easy days, one more intense day during the week and a long run on the weekend. The long run will actually decrease in distance this week for recovery.

Thanks for your input, you are too cool

Jenny -- that is great advise for Chris. I'm going to take it as I am also trying to build up to a half marathon in April. I felt like I was on the right track up before Christmas, and then we traveled and then I got strep.

LSU-- I'm sorry your daughter is ill. I hope she begins feeling better soon.

I made it up at 6:00 this morning and was at the pool and in the water by 6:15. I was pretty happy about that. I keep telling myself if I can keep it up for two weeks, it will be a habit, and I will be good for the rest of the year -- well, until May anyway, until the pool closes for the summer.

I worked until 8:00 tonight, but I managed to get away before 5:00 for a 30 minute run. I really wanted to run more, but that's all I had time for.

I hope everyone is doing well.

g.Hey everyone. We had icy snow over the weekend, my long didn't happen. Not that my long runs are terrible long. I am at 6 miles for long runs and want to hold that for another weeek. My aim is to get up to 8/9 miles by end of Fed and up to 9/10 miles by the end of March.

It was too icey to run Sat morning. I overslept and missed my swim class but I managed to get an hour spin class at the gym that morning. I am glad I squeezed in a 5 miler earlier in the week so I still got 3 runs in.

My bike training class went better this morning. My butt still hurt but it didn't feel like falling off like last week.

My week started out bad but ended ok. We had a leak from the bathroom fixture. Called a roofer and turned out it wasn't the roof but the pipes under the roof. Glad to get a smaller bill.
Then Friday my heat dies. We lit the fireplace and me, hubby and kids slept on the couches under lots of blanket to keep warm.
Got it temporarily fixed on Sunday.

It was a weird weekbut I got my workouts in.

Lovey

Yikes! What is it with all of the emergencies, illnesses, etc., in this group?!?

In reality, I guess that's one of the great challenges of this kind of training -- sometimes life just interferes with our best-laid plans, and the best we can do is fit in what we can fit in, and remember that this is our hobby...

I'm sitting in the airport right now, getting ready to head down for that visit with my parents. It's likely that I won't get very much training in this week, but that's okay. I did bring my running shoes and swimming stuff, and hopefully I'll fit in a training session or two, but if it doesn't happen, I'm not too worried...

I'l do my best to keep in touch this week. I think I should be able to check in pretty frequently....

I hope your trip goes well, Jenny.

Lovey -- sorry about the home issues -- I hate when my house doesn't cooperate with us.

I got my swim in this morning, early, again. I find that I am absolutely starving, however. It's only 30 minutes, and I'm not burning that many calories, but I ate a normal breakfast (toast/peanut butter and coffee) after swimming, and two hours later, I had to eat again -- granola bar, clementine, and a hard boiled egg. Then I ate a huge lunch (for me) -- chipped beef on toast.

Does anybody else get like that with regular swimming? Will I eventually adjust and go back to my normal eating pattern?

I find if I sit in the hot tub at the pool for a few minutes after swimming that I am not as hungry. But, like you, if I go straight from swimming to home, it is lock the fridge or I will eat us out of house and home!

Outstanding weather here today -- loved my run outside.  Hope everyone else is having some good weather.  Short run but I pushed it up into mostly z4 to get the most bang for the buck.  Not sure how much bang I got but I certainly paid my buck lol!  No bike tonight; heading to a game dinner.  Finished my latest testing phase on the bike and hit 317 for my 5 minute power.  So 256 critical power I think.  Steady gains.  Looking forward to see how the improvement over the winter translates to riding outside.

Anyone got any advice for better tolerating 2+ hour trainer rides?  I think I hit my breaking point around an hour and a half, and I really start suffering thereafter (mostly mentally).  Maybe there's a tasty treat I could save for the 1.5 hour point that I could spin easily for a couple minutes while enjoying to push through the final 45 minutes...

She's better-ish, in that her respiratory infection is gone, but she's still recovering, and will be in an in-patient rehab facility for a while longer - maybe a month or so until she regains some strength... I'm not sure there's going to be much training happening this week, but that's okay.

Jenny, good luck on your trip and a speedy recovery to your mom.

I had a great run tonight. My pace is getting faster. I am at a steady 14 1/2 min/mile whereas 6 weeks ago I was 15 1/2 min/mile.
Progress is being made. After my run, I went to the gym to grab the boys from their dad. They were playimg racquetball and had 15 minutes left. For 20 mins, I did some upper body weights and then more stretching (I stretch after each run too). All in all, a great workout.

Ouch, I feel your pain. My MIL was in Tampa General Hospital for about a month last year, then rehab for another month after a brain bleed (anuerysm(?)). It about wore my wife out as she traveled up there nearly every day. I feel your pain. I'm sure it will all work out in the end, and I'm sure they appreciate you being there for them.

It's good that you are there, Jenny. I know it's exhausting. But at least the weather is warmer?

Lovey -- great progress on your run time!

cd -- I wish we had a hot tub at the pool. This morning was better. I ate a bowl of oatmeal with dried cranberries and then I was in the classroom all morning. Toward noon, my stomach started complaining a little, but really, I was fine. I did eat a big lunch, however. :-)

As to the swim . . . . I keep adding up the distances, and I think I swam 1800m. That is by far a record for me. I did a ladder workout -- 50m, 100m, 150m, 200m, 250m. 300m, 250m, 200m, 150m, 100m, and 50m. I keep adding it up -- I even had my 11 year old add it up. The most remarkable thing is that I did it in 40 minutes. That's like speedy fast for me. To be fair to myself, I really didn't dally at the wall when turning, just pushed off and went. And I gave myself only 10-15 seconds between sets. I just never thought I would see that distance in a workout -- nor that I could last 40 minutes in the water swimming at one time.

K-Mom, that is quite awesome on the swim. Great job! The hot tub thing is something I read on here. Evidently there is something between cold and hunger and the body. I haven't looked into it very much, but I have noticed that if I warm up well after a swim, I am less inclined to eat the entire pantry.

Today was a fartlek run for me, and I pushed a few of the stretches out further or faster then I originally planned, which had the heart pumping pretty well. Another good day. I hope everyone enjoys their day.

My maddness starts today...

It's launch week at our gym.  What that means is that for the next 10 days or so I will be totally consumed with group x classes.  I will teach every day (sometimes twice a day) until next Saturday.  The good thing is about half the classes will be spinning classes, so at least that is applicable training.

Today's plan: Combat practice at lunch, then swim and run this afternoon after work (thinking 2000 yds + 30 minute run).  Tomorrow is more practice for launch.

I've got my next HM one month from today.  I'm trying to wrap my head around what I should/need to do to finalize preparation for that (and this is what happens when you train without a plan).  I'm thinking I will try to get in 3 runs a week, two short, one longer...but still keeping my "long" run a reasonable distance (8-10 miles)....I dunno.  Thoughts?

I hope everyone is doing well today. I had a pretty good day of training.

6:15 a.m. -- 30 minutes at the pool

4:15 pm -- 30 minutes on the trainer

4:50 pm -- 28 minutes running

I'm hoping for a "long-ish" run tomorrow -- about 7 miles. I'm still trying to work my distance back up to pre-Christmas levels.

I'm feeling pretty good about my swim -- I feel like I'm swimming from my core more and more. I'm pleased.

Hi!

I think  that I didn't manage to post all week. Sorry! My husbands been sick since Tuesday, so all evening activities have fallen to me.

I am on target to get my 3 runs in for the week.

And, I had my second swim class last night. I can feel significant improvement in my stroke efficiency. Plus, I had a major breakthrough! We were using the pool bricks and diving to the bottom, then pushing it as far as we could. It took me 4 tries to get to the bottom of the deep end, but I finally did it! My coach was awesome! He just kept reassuring me, and giving me pointers.  The others in the class were great too. Every one cheered when I surfaced after finally succeeding.

When the coach first told us what we were going to do, I said, "I don't think I can do that." He looked at me and said, "I don't think you've tried yet."  It was priceless! He put me right in my place.

Have a great night, every one.

Hey guys, I'm back home. The trip to see my parents was good. My step-mom is slowly making progress, and is in a nice facility. Dad gets kind of lonely at home without her, so it was good I was able to visit. I got 2 runs in while I was there, but that was it for training. I'll try to get back on track this week.

How's everything going?

Sorry I haven't been on this week. My daughter was hospitalized for a bad case of RSV on Monday and got out on Wednesday afternoon so I have been focused on being momma bear and protecting her and cuddling her. The beginning of 2012 completely sucks. Hopefully things will begin to get better. On the plus side we will be able to get back into our house in 2 to 3 weeks! Hooray!!!

I haven't been able to train, workout, or eat well. I am completely doing a 180 tomorrow. I have an hour swim and an hour run tomorrow. Back to training and eating right. I cannot afford anymore excuses.

Hope everyone else had a great week

Glad your stepmom is doing better.

My weekend started off being exhausted. Friday went to bed at 215, up at 5. Went couponing and then swim training at 6am.
Coach had us swimming nonstop. I am so not at that level yet, it was exhausting. Headed out for a run right after my swim.
My legs felt so heavy and slow, I kept apologizing to my running buddy. Since restarting running, I went from 15 min pace to
a 14 min pace EXCEPT after swimming. Believe it or not I've only been able to maintain a 16 min pace. BUT yesterday I ran and maintained a
14 min pace!

Slow Turtle: Great job with the swim class -- doing things we didn't think we could do is the best part of this journey.

Jenny: I'm glad you had a nice visit with your dad, and it sounds like your step mom is making progress. I'm sure they appreciated your being there for them.

LSURunningMom: I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter. That is very scary. I hope she continues to recover quickly. The training will be there for you when you are ready.

Lovey:  That sounds like a pretty intense morning -- good job with the run. I hope you were able to get a nap in.

As for me, I ended up taking a rest day yesterday -- from everything. I rarely do that, so it felt kind of good, but I also feel a little guilty. I went shopping with the family in Wichita, and we ate lunch at Doc Greens. I had the Dr. Beeks salad -- my favorite thing to eat of everything. I was able to get some much needed clothes for my oldest and my youngest -- I bought a few things for myself, and then we went to cold stone. I had the kid's sized berry yogurt with granola and it's the first thing I've eaten there that I really liked.

Anyway, I had a good training day today -- I did a 30 minute spin on the trainer before church, then after nap, the little guy and I went to the pool. He can only last about 30 minutes before his lips turn purple (I'm buying him a wet suit today, based on the thread on kids being cold in the pool in the main discussion room). Anyway, no one else went with us (which annoyed me), so I spent the time treading water and swimming around him while he did his stuff. I taught him how to blow water out of the end of a noodle, so we had a successful trip. Then just before dinner, I went out for a 40 minute run.

It was a beautiful day today -- almost 60 during my run. The high tomorrow is expected to be 65, so I'm looking forward to that run, too.

I hope everyone had a great weekend.

Oh no!! How scary to have your baby in the hospital! Glad she's doing better! You really have had a rough start to the year - but you have a great attitude. Keep up the good work!

Great job on the improvement! I think triathletes often under-estimate how much the swim can take out of them, so I think it's actually a good thing that you're doing some post-swim workouts - I'm planning to incorporate a little more of that this year as well.

Good morning, all! I had a good swim this morning -- about 35 minutes. I'm hoping for a run later this afternoon -- it should be a great day for it.

Lots of great swimming going on around here.  I finally get back in the pool on Friday for the first time in 5+ months.  Should make for a sore weekend!  At least it will break up the run/bike monotony.
