So....I had the opportunity to get down to Tampa this past weekend to participate in the Gasparilla races completing the 5K on Saturday and 8K on Sunday (some crazy people were doing the Michelob Ultra and doing all 4 races the same weekend: 5K, 8K, 15K and a 1/2 marathon!)

My challenge and question to the group....I train in Raleigh, NC where the temps are flip/flopping from 30's-50's but found myself in 80+ degrees in Tampa.  Does anybody know how to estimate the impact of temperature on pace?  And more importantly, how do you you prepare for a 30+ degree difference?

Thank you,

Martha

I've heard that Gasparilla is super fun. Never done it myself though. You had bad luck - the weekend before it was 40 in Tampa and then this weekend it will be also be cooler. You hit the one hot weekend!

The heat will slow you down. Sometimes a lot. I don't know that there is much way to prepare for it in a day or two other than to be sure that you hydrate enough the day before.

When the weather starts to warm up down here I'll do some heat runs where I run on purpose in the middle of the day. It's miserable but helps to get my body used to it I think.

Hi Amy -

The Gasparilla races are indeed a blast.  With all the options on distances you can really get a great workout.  The only major problem this year was a city-wide boil water alert....restaurants and hotels and especially bars ;-) were challenged to keep up with demand while keeping everyone healthy.  The race was not impacted at all and there was plenty of water on the course and the end.  Kudos to that race staff!

It was nice having the option of the various distances.  But that meant that the short races (5K & 8K) started later in the morning (after the 15K and 1/2 starts accordingly) adding to the heat issue.

May definitely be worth getting there next year !

Martha

Hydrate! I got it real bad one time in the Arizona desert and had to take in fluids via an IV at an emergency room.

May be a good week to take it completely easy as you should be tapering down for your marathon anyway. Sounds like you will need all your strength. I am sure you are going to do great DLB. Hang in there and good luck!!!

Crazy how we had the same injury at almost the same time. I am thoroughly pissed because I had a lot of miles in the bank and I probably lost it all.

Going to keep a good attitude and try to turn this ship around. Actually wasn't bad timing with all the snow we have had plus I have been very busy with work.

I am saying it here so I will do it  - I am going to shoot for a big weight loss week.

Good luck!

I'm deff doing the Gasperilla run nxt year. Having lived in fort lauderdale and now tampa running in hot humid weather deff takes a toll on you. Even when it's cloudy and 70 out the humidity feels like a warm wet blanket weighing you down. All you can do is hydrate like crazy and try to get your runs in as early as possible. Like previously mentioned, we're having alot of temp changes. One day it's in the mid 30's with frost on the grass then 3 days later it's 80 and it's time to take the top off the jeep and head to the beachCool.

Redfly, lets make up for lost time and back on track!!

Here we are at Friday again. I hope that everyone is gearing up for a fun weekend! Here in the tropics we're expecting some colder (and possibly rain too) weather than we're used to so we'll see what happens to my training. I'll definitely be out there but my training partners tend to drop like flies when the temp goes down.

Ewwww! Is it dropping into the 60's ( Ha! Ha!). I hate you, just kidding!

The rain is finally washing away all the snow which is nice. I couldn't have picked a better time to be injured because it really hasn't been safe to run outside. Going to try running for the first time tomorrow, wish me luck. I am so psyched that it is finally March, it just makes me feel that we are finally over the worst of winter.

Hit a milestone in the pool today, although I take 20 second breaks at the end of each length I finally went over 1000m in a consecutive session.

Kids playoff basketball games this weekend in between my running and biking.

What does everyone else have going on for the weekend?

I'm starting a master's swim class today.  It's Wed night and Sat morning for 8 weeks.  The coach is the head coach of my son's YMCA swim team.  The previous 8 week session was the first they offered.  It sounds like only a handful of people signed up for that first session.  I'll report back after...

Dogpaddle - 2013-03-02 11:42 AM Totally blew the diet last night.  Two slices of pizza and 4 miniature candy bars... auuugghhh!  Plus I skipped one of my Jillian workouts Frown  Back on track today.... Jillian (I'm starting to hate her) and 30 mins on the trainer.  I'm considering trying a more structured diet next week and wondering if anyone has any thoughts.  I'm reading about Paleo for athletes, southbeach, and the Heller carb addicts healthy heart program.  Any input would be appreciated.  I'm beginning to think if you're 50+ and female you're toast.

My wife hates that Jillian  too (just kidding!!). I don't think 2 slices and 4 minis is terrible, especially if you save some calories during the week.  Now if you said you had a hole bag of minis that would be a different story. My sweet tooth is my biggest enemy, especially at Halloween time when I am imposing the daddy tax on the kid's bags of candy. I have just been calorie counting but would love to hear what you find out on your diet research. I am a little pissed off with my nutritionist that did a total about face on what she had me doing for two months so I think it is time for me to do some of my own research also. I'll let you know if I find anything good.

The master's practice went well.  One generally fit man maybe 50 years old.  One generally fit young woman around 25.  One overweight man approx 27 years old.  Me, 43 years old, obese.  The coach was not there but will be there on Wed night.  There will be 2 more Saturdays that he will probably miss due to age group swim team meets.

We created our own workout and generally did the same things.  The first 2 people were faster than me over a 100 meter distance and did 7x100M on 2 minutes.  I did the same for 4 100s, but then changed the interval to 2:10 and ended up doing 6 with the last one Backstroke.  We did a few sprints and nobody was excessively speedy.  Then we did some 50s alternating kick and swim of strokes other than free.  I held my own just fine on these.  Finished up independently.

I'm looking forward to a coached workout, but did enjoy swimming with others again.

BT training log does not really allow you to track some workouts as yards and others as meters.  Since this pool is meters, I have switched my default to meters.  It makes my previous swims look odd, but the current ones looks normal.

weighing in at 179.5

That leaves 10 more lbs to be overweight instead of obese.

Rusty - It was nice when I saw the obese go off my doctors report. That will be a great accomplishment.

Lost 2 pounds this week and I am finally back down to 178 where I began the Portly Tri Challenge. Not too upset with this though being that my nutritionist sent me down the wrong path and I have been injured for a month.

It was nice to get back out there running again but I am still a little concerned that I am getting some pain on the outside of my right foot (like a bad ankle sprain) even after this long layoff. I am going to try and run through it and just keep an eye on it.

Going to shoot for a weight number somewhere in the 160's by the end of the month. I haven't seen the 160's in over 20 years, so that will be really cool.

Only one month to go, the quest for the coveted Black Dog mug ends on April 1st .

Now with the good weather coming I think we are going to have a huge month.

Let's make it happen people! Good Luck!!! Smile

198.2. Down two pound from last week, but I don't believe it. I've had a cold for about 10 days now, so I think it's just water weight. Mucinex is magic, but it sure does make me feel dehydrated. I'm drinking 8-12 servings of water a day and it's still not enough. Oh well, hopefully I'll feel better soon.
