Welcome Scott! 2-3 sprints is a good goal for year one. After that, you can decide if you want to move up or not.

Finally got my first swim in. It's been probably 18 months since I've gotten any serious distance in. 1500 yards in a little over 32 minutes. I'm happy with that. I noticed that my left stroke is off a bit. (Seems to be less coordinated). My neurologist told me that it seems that I still have a little bit of dysmetria on my left, so that might be why. This will hopefully go away after a while.

Welcome, Scott! Looks like you are in a great position for a first time triathlete. If I were you I'd commit to a sprint and enjoy the experience, and then from there decide if you want to try an push yourself harder in another sprint or bump up to an Olympic. With the weekly run mileage you describe, an oly is very reasonable if you have time in your week to fit in training for the bike and swim. Don't stress about the swim, if you know how at all you're ahead of many first timers. With some training I'm sure you'll be great. Have you thought about changing up your runs? It jumped out at me that you run 4 miles 5 days a week. Generally one would break it up into a couple short runs, a couple medium runs, and one longer run. I can expand on this thought later but I'm typing on my phone now. It sounds like you have experience running so you probably have your own thoughts on this.

Yeah I started training in November and the thought of an Olympic distance hasn't even entered my mind. Very confident that I'll get my 3 Sprints in this summer and just enjoy watching the pounds drop.

Down 3 more this week and 40.5 total since Nov.4th!

Evrryone very quiet around here, hope it's because you are all very busy training.
I was out last night but still got up this morning and done 20miles on the bike, pretty pleased with myself, hangover and all.
I want to try this week to do at least two turbo sessions. What are you up to?

I'm planning on getting out for a run this afternoon. Ended up painting the basement with my wife instead of running yesterday.

Just finished my longest run of the year... 6.38mi and started biking this week on my new bike! I think I'm going to sign up for an olympic distance in August... the Mountain Man in Flagstaff, AZ.... Am I nuts?

    Welcome Scott!

    This occurred yesterday.

Went to the gym after work and saw someone who may or may not happen to be an extremely attractive woman. So Old Greg here decides to run for 40 minutes at 6.5mph on the treadmill to show off. Mind you, the fastest I've ever run was 5.0mph, so needless to say I thought my legs were going to fall off and my shirt was soaked through. I then proceeded to pretend that I didn't notice her and act all surprised when she said hello.

An Oly in August is not nuts at all but I would suggest doing 2-3 sprints first. An Oly is no joke. Running 10k after racing for a couple hours can be hard. From your training log it looks like you have the swimming down and that is the biggest jump up from an Oly.

That said, I jumped from sprints to a 70.3 then back to an Oly. That's just the way things worked out for me. If you put the training in, you can do it.

    Howdy Folks!

Been gone a while but finally back in the land of cell service and wifi!

The camp I was imprisoned in for the last 7 days was something else! Food was well not good for you, but managed to stay away from the desserts (mostly ) And put a great big helpings of salad an vegetables.

No gym, but was working out side 2- 4hrs driving everyday and working 12 to 16 hrs a day and it was -25 to -37 all week! My skin is so wind, cold burnt and dry lol I need a steam lol!

Tried my best to watch what I ate, not looking forward to the scale tomorrow morning I'll be happy with a zero loss this week, gotta pick your battles right? And I will be ok with 1-2 lbs gain but any more will major suck!

Will hopefully start swimming with masters on Tuesday morning!

George I think it was you who complimented my pace. Thanks means a lot! I think I am slow as molasses probably because I ride with people push 40 km/h fairly often.

Well folks have a great week training!

Today was a rest day for me. I ran some intervals yesterday. Just a typical week for me this week. 3 swims/ 3 bikes/ 3 runs = 9.5hrs. Not sure when my training plan starts ramping up the hours. Not for awhile yet. I'll need to be able to bike and run outside to be able to go longer.

Mike - what kind of bike did you get and how did you like your ride? Did you get some kind of a fit? I got a bad fit and it is hard to correct the negative effects I've had from it.
6.38mi run is pretty good - just over 10km. A great start on your road to an Oly. I like the Oly distance races. EDIT: I just read Mike's post to you and he already said what I had here and he checked your swimming and found it good so just get to work on your training.

I had suggested you do a Sprint and Mike says several so do at least one if not more. It's a great way to see what it is like and give you lots of ideas on how to improve your performance. My first two Sprints were more of a learning experience than "races". I learned a lot in mine - especially about the swimming. My time on the second race was 11minutes better than my first. After this year I should go back and do a Sprint to see what it feels like.

Oops! Yes, welcome Scott. Don't be shy, jump in and start asking questions and telling us what you're up to. You'll get to know us all pretty quick.

Too funny Greg, obviously you weren't too aloof because she did notice you enough to say Hi. And, I'd sure love to be able to run 6.5mph for 40 minutes. The best I've been able to manage is 6.6mph for 2:30 (minutes) and another 7 intervals at 6.4mph.

    Hopefully she'll be back again.

I just found this post and that your race is the "Mountain Man". I just wanted to suggest you search for any Mountain Man race reports. It is really useful to read what others experienced in the same race. It's also pretty inspirational. Right after I post this I'll just check and see if I can find any RR myself.

EDIT: I just did a search and found three RR from 2013 (assuming they're the same race you're talking about).

Last Thursday I ran 8.05 mph for just over 39 minutes and my shins have been a little tight when I run ever since so I've been taking it easy and taking advantage of the chance to get stuff around the house done.  Hoping to get back into it strong this week.

I think my shins/calves/glut medii would be all seized up if I tried that. I'm stiff after just my modest intervals. But, I just have to keep at it to get faster...I hope.

I bit the bullet and bought a tri bike this weekend. Actually went to Nytro Multisport in Encinitas while visiting the area. So knowledgeable and friendly. Unfortunately, the bike won't be in for about 4-5 weeks.

Cannondale Slice 5 with Shimano 105 components. Got the tri package that's always advertised in the BT banner above. Shoes, pedals, cleats, wet suit, helmet, transition bag and a bunch of goodies. Getting me really excited for the new season.
