What would you buy or use the money for? Coach, power meter, race wheels, travel/entry fees, new bike/frame/components etc.......? Curious what everyone has at the top of their "wish" list. I'm a bit embarassed to say that I have accumulated almost all of the goodies over the 5 years I have been doing this so I will hold off on my response until I can give it some thought.

I would actually start with a towing bar for my car and a bike carrier to attach to said towing bar... I struggle to trust my bike to my strap on bike carrier, and I'm finding more and more opportunities to ride away from home. I want a secure solution... And then, Some coaching... As much as I could get with the remaining $1,000 - $1,200.

Here is the best bike rack I have found. I've toted my bike all over the place with this carrier. A little pricey but well made and super easy to use......and within your $1500 budget.

Well, I have given it some thought. Initially, I thought I would use the money to get a massage every week until the money ran out. Might not make me any faster but would sure make me feel better. But, then I went to swim and after a frustrating workout realized that if I had the money and there was someway to work it out I would want to have a swim coach work with me 2-3 times a week until the money ran out. Not just lessons but someone there at almost every workout tweaking my stroke and keeping me from falling into the same old bad habits. I told my tri coach one time that there was no way he was going to make me into a swimmer but I think frequent and intensive swim instruction would be money well spent. Not enjoyed but well spent.

Now if only a way to find the money and willpower to commit to such a program.

Daily, on-deck swim instruction would be very cool.

I would consider a Wahoo Kickr or a set of your E-Motion rollers.

I like the idea of race entry fees and travel expenses.

All really good ideas.

Kevin Sounds like you had an exciting time at the race. I keep telling myself that I need to figure out how ton use the co2 thing that I have but, I have never quite got around to doing it yet. I'll be trying to figure it out on the side of the road one day. I can only imagine how that will go.

Jason I'm glad to see that I am not the only on that feel like swimming is like trying to pat your head and rub your belly at the same time LOL your post made me feel better about my struggles.

Randy Oh the possibilities, I think that first and formost I would get some swim lessons or a swim coach, then a wetsuit and a tri suit or two. The rest of the money would go into the new bike fund.

Well gang been busy the last two days yesterday was 2600 yrds at the pool and tonight was a bike/run night 20 miles on the bike and 3.2 mile run. I rode with a group tonight and was almost two mph faster! Funny how trying to keep up with the group will add to my bike.

WOOHOO!!!!

Off road tri night last night. Of course I'm exhausted today

3/8 but there's no prize until the end of 10 weeks. Not sure I can keep THAT up! LOL the #2 beat me by 6 minutes and the #4 is 5 minutes behind me so I might be in a decent position. Time will tell!!

Now my BIKE time was 55 out of the total field of 139 (including men) and 4th out of the 40 women so I'm feeling pretty good today. RR up if you are interested but I put it up more for me to be able to document it.

BTW< I have a few race reports that seem to have gone from done and public to "draft" with all the data missing Anyone else?

got 21.8 miles done in under a hour!!

Then I jumped in the pool to cool off and headed out to Ref 3 lacrosse games where I got in 6 miles of jogging!!!

Decent night of training

Hmmm...$1500 for anything tri related? That's a tough one. There are many things I'd like to have, but I sort of feel that until I improve my own engine, those things (wheels, etc.) are sort of wasted at this point in time.

I'm buying a new car this week, so a hitch mount bike rack would be nice (though the bike will fit inside the back of the new car--I brought it home yesterday and checked first. Also made sure my 3 dogs can ride comfortably in the back. Priorities). Randy, thank you for posting about that bike rack. I like the simplicity of it. Are they only sold through the manufacturer or are their dealers in the U.S.?

A coach would be nice. I've not been too accountable to myself of late, and knowing that someone was expecting me to load my day's data and who is giving me feedback would be beneficial. I was considering a coach for next season, but now I'll have a car payment instead.

A couple half iron or full iron distance entries sure would help making register easier, wouldn't it?

Nancy-I don't know if they have dealers. I ordered online. I have had the rack for 5 years and it is one of the best pieces of tri related equipment I own. So easy to put the bike on the rack and secure. I use mine on a Honda Accord. Great thing is that it adjusts easily to pretty much any type of bike. I've used it with a mountain bike and my wife's "granny" cruiser. I've had lots of people come up to me at races and such asking about it. First class product.

Randee-Nice job in the race!

Recovery Boots!  I have most of the stuff I really need too and this would be my definite next purchase if some $$ fell from the sky!

I don't want to put a RR in my profile so...

WARNING: RACE REPORT CONTENT

First race of the season last night, a 5K trail race. I've raced this race before and it's mostly single track. My strategy was to not get stuck behind a group and be unable to pass. Right at the gun I sprint to get the "hole shot" and I make it into the woods in second place. I hear someone say "I bet we catch these guys in less than a mile".
After about 1:30 I'm frikken dying from the sprint and the trail is climbing steadily. Still in second we break out onto a woods road and I start getting passed until I'm in 9th place. We duck back onto the single track and I pass two people (one who flew out at the gun in first place). I'm really suffering now just trying to keep within sight of the front pack. The rest of the field is probably being blocked on the single track.
Around the one mile mark I slip and fall, my adrenaline and HR spike. I start to see some chasers behind me. 2 miles and the climbing has leveled off. I've lost sight of the front, but the trail switch backs and they suddenly appear. This turns out to be a false sighting because they are WAY ahead, but the winding trail brings us close together.
2.5 miles and I trip really hard on a rock and tumble but get right back up. OUCH. The chasers are a 100yds behind. My knee brace (for IT band) is slipping so I reach to take it off. OH NO! it falls to the ground. I turn around to get it. Now I can here footsteps. I'm in SO MUCH PAIN from the effort. I'm arguing with myself: "it's ok if they pass me", and "FK NO they ain't catching me".
Hold my position for 7th out of 75 racers. 27:30. I was pissed at my time, but it really was some of the fastest I've ever run. I forgot trail racing is just a little slower than road racing.

Very cool. Sounds like you got the most out of your performance.

If you haven't ever read it, There is a very fast runner named Dave Roche, his blog is called Beauty and Change. He does a lot of trail running and seems to trip over a lot of things while doing it. Made me think of him when I was reading about your tumbles. Google Beauty and Change. Worth the read.

Great report.....like how you included all the things going on in your head during the race. I'm afraid if I did that in my race reports they would be "R" rated at best. Sounds like you left it all out there.

Tough Question.  Just got my 910XT and the associated accessories.   Probably spend most of it on some coaching and training to help make me more efficient faster.   1500 would buy me a couple months of strong training I'd think.

Well, last couple days I've focused my runs REALLY HARD on managing the HR.   I believe it might be helping a little bit.  Maybe I have been running the red line a bit too much.

Yesterday, did 5k, and focused really hard on keeping HR in the mid-upper 150 range.  Ended up with 25 of 34 minutes in that z3 range.  Average HR was 154 for the run.  Pace was clearly slower at 11:39/100 but I felt generally pretty good.   Did the same thing today, HR was average of 154, although I did have a few higher spikes as the route ran today had the hill that I've talked about in the pace.   Pace was overall better at 11:21.   I'm going to keep at this strategy for a week or two I think, and see what kind of improvements it will produce for me.   ANY RECOMMENDATIONS from the gang?

Monday night and tonight did some swims.   For those that use it, what do you consider a good and efficient ROLF score.   Mines running upper 40's to low 50's on average.  Don't know if that's good or bad, but would like to know what comparisons others might use as a good measure.

Thanks!

The past two weekends I have been traveling on business, and this weekend I am traveling with my family. I asked my wife if she would mind if I brought my bike along and I got "THE STARE". So, workouts are restricted to after she goes to bed, which means it's dark and I am relegated to the hotel gym for the next five days, which is better than nothing, but not much...

I don't like machines and their calibrations though. On my bike I ride twice as far with the same effort, but of course in a gym there is no where near the wind I experience on the road, so I sweat profusely.

I do have to say, I bought a pair of Jabra Bluetooth headsets to use while running because I hate running and I thought music might make the time pass more quickly. It does. I love the Jabra Sport headset. They are supposed to be sweat proof, something I definitely needed, and they sit very comfortably on my ears, I have seriously forgotten I had them on. NO WIRES is FANTASTIC!! I will do a product review after I have used them for a few more weeks, but thus far, I like them a lot!

Good work on the HR work. However, I think it might take longer than a week or two to see results. What I mean by results is running faster at the same HR. It takes the body longer than a few weeks to adapt and it is going to be hard to be patient if you are worried about your pace. I would think 6-8 weeks minimum to see some changes. You may want to look at some of the information out there on running in Z2 or below. Mark Allen had an article about this some years ago and another big proponent is Phil Maffetone. Here is a link to the Maffetone site.http://www.philmaffetone.com/what-is-the-maffetone-method

Link to Mark Allen article: http://www.markallenonline.com/maoArticles.aspx?AID=4

I think there are alot of good ways to set training zones/paces including HR. Hopefully, these sites will explain it better. Patience is key and that is where I come up short.

I am responding to Paul but this is a whole group message

The thing is that consistency trumps intensity in the long run. What you are doing, committing to get in some training, even while on vacation or travelling for work, will pay long term dividends. Even if you only get in 20 minutes in the hotel gym on the treadmill or 30-45 on a spin bike, the consistency of working toward better fitness will lead to great results in the long run.

I have been very impressed with everyone in our group, with how consistently we all are working toward our goals. Life will some times get in the way. Training may not always happen. But, if you can find just 20-30 minutes a day to get in a short run or swim or bike (or even a walk with your spouse) it is way better than nothing. Almost without fail you will feel better for having done it no matter how you felt going in.

Years ago I made the decision to not miss work outs. Now, when I don't feel like it, or time is short, or I'm tired, I don't have that internal debate about whether or not I will train. That decision has already been made. I am going to get in the training. Of course life is going to happen. I do actually miss the occasional workout for family events or work things or complete exhaustion but it is pretty darn rare. My wife woould say that it is just my OCD that makes me this way......

Make a consistency goal. Something like training for at least 30 minutes for seven straight days. When you get to seven, see if you can get to 14 days, then 30. Give yourself some wiggle room. If you want to count intense stretching (yoga?) then count it. See what happens when there are no empty boxes on your training log for a month. Good things I bet.

To Jason's point, and it might have been him who posted this in the larger forum some time ago, but if you look at the logs of the people who are at or near the podium more times than not, it's because they don't miss workouts. Ever. It's scary to see their 4,000 yard swim workouts and sub 7 training miles because I always think I'm so far from that it's barely even the same sport, but everyone starts somewhere. Of course as I say this I'm on my taper for my race on Sunday. I hope my consistency (which hasn't been great) pays off.

Good morning gang, hope everyone is well. Had another great day of training yesterday. Joining the triathalon club has been great motivation to push myself a little more. Swam 2600yds first (that makes 2 of the three swims that I set as a goal this week). Then met the guys for a nice little run, Hill repeats on the menu last night. Was a really tough 6 miles. Felt great when we were finished! Jason what a great point about consistency, I really have a hard time remembering consistency over quantity.

It's only very recently that I've started to become consistent. PAYING a coach is certainly one way to make sure you don't miss a workout And I agree with what Jason says above.

There have been a few days here or there where I just felt crappy or just too beat up to train so I'm in a strange place where I'm trying to figure out if it's really my body telling me to take a day off or if I just need to get my mind over the matter and do it. I did take this past Monday off and I don't really feel guilty about it because I know I worked hard Sunday and Tuesday. However, if you look at my logs for the past 2 months compared to February and March you'd see WAY more consistency. I feel like I'm finally getting somewhere too :D

Today I went to the pool and weather permitting tonight I may hit the lake. Big swim on Saturday - my first 1.2m distance in a "race." It'll be a relay with my cousin and husband. Like 6 months ago I decided I needed to get a good swim in without worrying about anything else. And now it's in 2 days. EEK!! So we're off tomorrow and today is my "Friday!"

Have a good day and a good weekend. Catch ya next week all!!

Fun times on the trainer this afternoon. Trying to get short hourish rides in frequently over the next week or so per the ISM saddle guy. Need to toughen up a 1" area on my sitting area.

I am headed to Northern Michigan early tomorrow morning. My wife and I are headed up without the kids for a couple days of reconnect time. I am really looking forward to it. We have a place right on Lake Michigan that is smack-dab in the middle of training heaven (unfortunately Lake MIchigan is still a little too brisk right now). I'm bringing the bike and some running shoes and will get in a bit of training but I will be keeping it pretty moderate. I do have the instructions to do 60-90 minutes "hard" on the bike on Saturday morning. I think I have a plan that will get me some great scenery and a great workout.

Internet connectivity is fairly sparse up there but I will check in as possible. Anyone racing or doing anything special this weekend?

I'm bringing the bike and some running shoes and will get in a bit of training but I will be keeping it pretty moderate. I do have the instructions to do 60-90 minutes "hard" on the bike on Saturday morning. I think I have a plan that will get me some great scenery and a great workout. Internet connectivity is fairly sparse up there but I will check in as possible. Anyone racing or doing anything special this weekend?

We're headed down to Ocean City, MD, for a few days starting Sunday.  Looking forward to watching the US Open and the World Cup, and just relaxing for a few days.  I plan to get in a couple of runs down there but nothing big planned.

While I wholeheartedly agree with Jason, et. al., regarding consistency, I'm enjoying this couple of weeks of unstructured training...just doing what I feel like doing and not worrying about a plan, HR/wattage targets, minutes @ so-and-so pace, or 90 minute Masters sessions. I had probably my best Bikram session ever yesterday and that's definitely a result of not being fatigued going into it.  I even blew off spin class this morning just because.

I'll be back at it soon enough to start training for Waterman's Half but it's nice to work out like a normal person for a little while.

I have my first Olympic this weekend, Sunday. I feel like I'll never be 100% ready for a race because there's always something more I could have done, but I'm as ready as I can be. Took this week pretty easy with an easy-ish spin on Monday, Yoga on Tuesday, 2000 yard easy swim on Wednesday, yesterday totally off, today another light swim and tomorrow maybe 5 miles on the bike just to make sure the wheels still spin. I feel rested but antsy to let it all out. Since this is my first Oly I'm being conservative with my time goals but I'm thinking somewhere around 2:50 is probably realistic. T1 is this terrible run up a hill and the average time is around 6-7 minutes, so between that and a hilly course I'm not going crazy on a goal time. Figure 1:4X/100 on the swim, 1:20-1:30 on the bike and right around 50 minutes for the run. I know I could harder on the bike but I really want to set up for a good run as this is my first shot at this distance and I want positive memories of finishing, not limping the last mile.

The most valuable thing you can do for your endurance training is to schedule a weekly 2-4hr long ride from now until the end of time. Simply make this “what you do” every Saturday or Sunday morning.

Individuals are just that, individuals and need individual programs. However, with a group the size of yours, it may be difficult for your coaches to do 25 individual workouts.
