MotoQueen 13195 | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread Baowolf - 2007-10-14 10:58 AM Yay my first 6 mile jog/run without any walking and kicked the last mile at 7.0 with the last lap at 7.5 mph... Probably shouldn't have done 6 miles in the new running shoes... The blister isn't bad, I am hoping it heals up in a couple days. Grats all you guys on adding the miles. Still out of town. Super run, great job. Put some neosporen on the blister and it will help it to heal quicker. |

Expert 1580 Ankeny, Iowa | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread Hey everyone, Just got back from a 2.1 mile walk with hubby - since I am only using my run miles this walk was kind of to stretch the legs on an "off" run day. Lyssa is still in the lead with 80% (40 out of the goal of 50 miles) - I think if she surpasses it we should get 100 and something percent. Right now we are all over 40% of goal with the exception of Husker Tri Girl. I left her an inspire to hopefully log something because if she doesn't complete her miles we are going to have to potentially show our hineys in spandex. Not sure about you guys but I am not looking forward to that. She could still make it but as the days tick off the more 30 miles is going to seem like a big hurdle. Everyone that can go over and inspire her and maybe we can find out how she is doing. As always I need your runs through today (Sunday) posted in your log by NOON CST tomorrow so I can get our spreadsheet to Cat. Way to go Poison Apples.

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread I also wanted to make a brief brief statement to the gang. I wanted to thank D001 for helping me to put things into perspective. I occasionally get myopic in my focus on getting from point A to point B. Training for a tri is a highly involved task involving learning a ton of new information, balancing family, work, and training without burning out, some $ for equipment and progress never seems to come as quickly as we would like it to. Things like how old/young we are, what medical conditions we have, or how physically gifted folks are or are not doesn't really matter.... it just changes the pace and duration of exercize we can do to improve our current performance. One person's first mile walking, is another person's tripple ironman completion. Each started with a first step and is physically pushing the envelope for them. That said, we are all challenging our selves to push things in running for the month. As with some of us, I am competative and voiced some frustration in the forum here. We all get frustrated, it goes with the sport. So I just wanted to give D001 a public thanks for helping me with my forrest/tree problem. All of us newbie's can probly learn a thing or three from her. Edited by Baowolf 2007-10-14 5:46 PM |

Expert 973 Berkeley, Calif. | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread WOW! You guys are really racking up the miles. I can't believe how many of you are well over 50 percent of your goal when we're not even halfway through the month. I'm pretty much on target and you make me feel like a slacker! I went wetsuit shopping today and it wasn't as scary as I'd thought it would be. For the record, I wasn't scared of how I'd look in a wetsuit (trust me, I've known all along it wouldn't be pretty, and I'm totally OK with that), but just being completely out of my element and feeling like a fool. But I went to a shop that specializes in women's athletic gear and they were super nice and friendly and made me feel very comfortable. The plan is to rent the wetsuit next weekend for an OWS and after that I'll decide if I want to buy the wetsuit. (I have to say, I was actually somewhat pleased with how I looked in the wetsuit. It's like wearing those body-shaping undergarments! It's so stiff that it kind of holds in everything. Hee!) I've swam in a lake a couple times, so I know how important it is to practice the OWS -- so different from pool swimming! And yeah, I freaked out at first at not being able to see the bottom. I did get used to it, but my tri is going to be in the bay/ocean, so I want to practice swimming in saltwater with pretty choppy water. OK, enough about swimming, this is a run challenge! I've got a bike ride today, and then more running tomorrow. |

If Husker_Tri_Girl doesn't report in tomorrow, perhaps we should ask Cat if it's possible to drop her from our team roster. I could be wrong, obviously, but I just don't get the idea that she was every really dedicated to this challenge. If she was, she'd at least stop by to explain why she isn't doing any running. (If she is around, but can't run due to an injury, she can ask Cat to revise her goal.) Dee |

A 30 min swim is harder than I remember, but I am now more confident that I can swim for 30-45 min without drownding, but ya speed isn't gona be anything special. I know that you've looked into the Swimex SwimSpa. (And Endless Pools, etc.) Have you considered a cheaper option: tethering? I was reading some interesting articles the other day. You start with a small above ground pool, attach an elastic cord and tether yourself. Then, you swim against the resistance of the cord. It holds you in place, and you just keep swimming. Obviously, this is a cheaper alternative to a SwimSpa or Endless Pool. And, well, you get what you pay for, I guess. But from what I read, it does appear to work. It was kind of an interesting option, actually. As for swimming in general, I've always found it to be like riding a bike. If you don't do it for awhile, you may not be as good when you go back to it. But you aren't starting "from scratch" either. (Can you imagine if you had to learn to swim or bike each time you stopped doing it for awhile?) Dee |

It's actually easier to swim. Although, the chop will make it more difficult. Oh well. LOL Dee |

Baowold, here is an article on strength training for swimming. I figure even if you can't get to a pool very often, it certainly wouldn't hurt to strengthen the muscles that you will be using. Just a thought. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=... |

Veteran 131 Tampa, Florida | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread So my running was horrible today. I was just not into it. I think the problem is that I was running on a treadmill at the gym. The last 12-15 miles or so that I've logged have all been outdoors, varying surfaces, but not on a treadmill. Anyway, at three miles I gave it up and hit the pool. I couldn't believe it but I actually beat my record(well records in the last decade anyway), and swam a 500m split in 8 minutes. When I checked my time, I started to think that maybe I had lost count of my laps, but I'm almost certain I didn't. WooHOO! So I didn't leave the gym feeling like a loser....I'm not sure what the moral of this story is. I wish some of you guys were local so I could ask you about OWS here. It's still almost 90 and only getting down to the upper 60's at night, so the climate is perfect, I'm just kinda scared to go out swimming in some random lake by myself. I'm a good swimmer, I was a lifeguard for 6 years and swam competitively, but swimming by yourself is so dangerous. I almost drowned once on the very beach where I worked. Way to go Lyssa!!! and Baowolf, I've heard conflicting advice about blisters. I've always thought that popping them and keeping them clean and dry helped them heal faster than if you keep them moist(as with Neosporin). Maybe Neosporin cream as opposed to the ointment would be a good option. |

Master 2339 somewhere over the rainbow | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread jessica, definately don't do ows on your own, find a swim buddy, or just ask a friend to come sit on the shore and keep an eye on you. i swam across the lake where i live, i had my husband drop me off on one side and drive to the other side and keep an eye on me. i was still kind of nervous, but at least i knew he was there. watching. he kept telling me i was fine to just run down to the lake and swim on my own. to stay where i could see the bottom. but i never did, just too dangerous i think. good luck though, and congrats on the AWESOME swim time!!! you rocked it!! oh yeah, i keep meaning to tell you, i LOVE the quote on your sig! Veteran 131 Tampa, Florida | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread Lyssa, you rock. I'd be willing to absorb some of those miles too. I love that quote too. Keep thinking I should change it to something shorter, but, well, dammitt I just don't want to. Have you heard from Jason? I'm sure he's fine, but I've been thinking about him. Hope he's doing okay. As far as your advice, I never thought about it until you mentioned it, but I have some friends who go out to the lake almost every weekend and just sit around and drink beer. I'm sure I could probably ask them to watch me. My motivation could be to get back on dry land before they drink too much to save me if I need savin....lol |

Master 2339 somewhere over the rainbow | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread i talked to jason for a few minutes this morning, he seemed pretty bummed out. he just needs to grieve for a day or two, then i'm betting he'll be back to his competative self. family stuff can really sap ya. i know DEFINATELY get back to shore before the third round or so!! LOL but yeah, just someone to keep an eye on you, make sure you don't get in to trouble. and we could share husker tri girls miles totally. it's sort of intimdating to think of doing ANOTHER 40 miles before the end of the month, i think i can if i really pull out all the stops. hubby has a week off next week, and i could really go for it. but if you want some of the miles--i'll TOTALLY share!! LOL i don't know if cat will let us do it at all, i just thought i'd throw it out there, and see what you all thought. i feel bad just dumping her, but our team % is taking a nose dive because of her lack of miles. i feel bad even SAYING that |
