Hey Gang...

Just got back from our weekend in White Lake. I am exhausted. Scott and I volunteered at the 1/2 IM yesterday and then raced today.

I came in 3rd in my age group but the official times are not yet posted so I won't be posting my race report until they are. Set Up events is usually good at getting them posted by the next day!

I had a great swim, bike and run today and I PR'd this race course from last year by close to 5 mins!!

I hope everyone had a great weekend racing or training!!

Leanne

Mike and Dave...how'd your races go this weekend?

Congrats on your 3rd place!!! Whoo hoo! Glad you had a good race!

I don't think so at all. The best way to get better is by doing events.... but that is coming from a person that others call insane as welll/////

Hey all

I have been busy over the last week, wanted to stop by and see what I have been missing. How is everyone's training going? Anyone competing next weekend?

I found out that getting in to triathlons can open other oportunities for competition. The young guys on my fire department 20-26 yo put together a relay team for the firefighter combat challenge competition in Ashville, NC May 23-24. They called me and asked me (43 yo) if I was interested in joining them and I accepted. We trainined right after my "try out" and we did the whole course 3 times and man, that was a good cardio workout. So if anyone is going to be in Ashville, NC that weekend come check it out.

canadarn, what is the New Bern Tri called and when is it?

Mike, have you recovered from the hangover from all the beer we sent you from BT?

JT, how is your training going?

firefighter5765 - 2008-05-11 8:00 AM  JT, how is your training going?

My training is going well except instead of taking a recovery week from my 1/2 I took 2 weeks (or should I say I was lazy the 2nd week?). Greg gave me a swift "kick in the rear" and now I am back in form. I've started out this week pushing very hard and plan to continue into the middle of next week with hard training. About Wednesday of next week I will start to taper a little for my Memorial Day super sprint (my first tri). I am still focusing on the sprint on June 7. I need to get better in the water so I am really focusing on the swim. I really would prefer not to drown

Congrats on the combat challenge. That sounds like it will be lots of fun. It's also a great time to show the "young guys" that us "older men" still have some fight left in us.

firefighter5765 - 2008-05-11 8:00 AM  JT, how is your training going?

I need to get better in the water so I am really focusing on the swim. I really would prefer not to drown

Thanks for all the advice....I think, lol.

I thought my training volumne was not bad. I have used the 1000 yard benchmark since I have a sprint with a 200 yard swim and another sprint with 1000 yard swim. I guess it makes sense that I should swim even more. Hopefully towards the end of the summer I can do an oly, if I can get the swim distance conquored.

I do have a coach, but he coaches 10 of us at one time. Several of the people I train with are experienced swimmers. We only train once a week so it's hard for me to learn everything, especially when my peers are comcerned about their own training. My coach gives me pointers but he has several people to help at the same time.

The problem I have with swimming more is that I am plain tired out by the time I swim 1000 yards. I only swim  100 to 150 yards at a time because I am tired. I take a break and swim more. It used to be my breathing that held me back but I think I have solved that part. It goes back to my OP that my arms feel as if I am lifting weights. FYI, I think I would be considered a fairly fast swimmer. I can swim 50 yards in :40 and 100 yards in 1:33. I am just having a hard time with the endurance due to my arms killin me.

I appreciate all the suggestions.

I think you should keep doing the golf until you can swim real slow strokes. I was just like you last year. The golf strokes worked down to the teens but time dropped. My HIM training had me keep a time plus stroke for the 50's and that worked out the best.  My advice is to keep pushing the drills for 3 to 4 months. I made it my focus all winter long. My 100's are now down in the 1:40s from 2:10s. To let you know it is a constant effort I need to speed up my turn over 25 fast 25 slow & long ...  as so it goes on ..... PS about the coach ... one thing every two weeks is a lot to change and get corrected ..... keep up the nice work ... it does come ...

Thanks Greg. Right now I am trying to get as many swims in as I can. I keep trying to keep the "technique" in mind. I just have to convince myself that at this point it's not about speed it's about distance. If I can get the technique down I know the distance, and then the speed, will follow.

I'm heading to the pool right now. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hey Andrew...

The New Bern Triathlon last weekend was in the "Trysports" series which can be found on the Set-Up Events website. It was called the New Bern YMCA Triathlon. It was a great race for 'newbies'. The pool at the New Bern Y is very nice!

I hate open swim. My pool has lap swim until 6. From 6-7 they have some sort of water aerobics. From 7-9 Open swim. Usually when it's open swim I can still find a lane. I couldn't make it until after 7 tonight. When I arrived there were over 100 Boy Scouts in the pool getting certified. There was no way I was going to have any room to swim. I jumped in the car and came back home.

Man I had chills reading that, we have the same "problem" here at our YMCA's. I would like to see it set up where you could reserve a lane in the pool like you do a racketball court I don't mind sharing a lane as long as the other person is willing to swim with a newbie.

I am glad to hear everyone is training well and I am looking forward to hearing how your events go. I have been told that the firefighter combat challenge will be on VERSUS I just don't know what day or time.

Just worked thru some of my plans for HIM tomorrow.

Any special things like sunscreen etc ... I should think about?

Taking 1/2 day off to prep for race tomorrow. Load up the car so I am set for morning. Slow run (9pace for 30 mins) this afternoon so I can sleep tonight 10 PM if I can....test out new water bottle ....  Started carb loading last night and hydrating today .... another 3 more GE before bed ... Waffles and honey at 4:30 AM ..... PB and Honey w/ GE  at 5:30 on my way to event ...

6:45 Sun screen, Pick up packet at 7AM ....  7:10 do a brick 10m + 10m and set up.. Put on Wet suit at 7:45 .... race at 8:00AM.

Targets: 35 swim: 5 min T1 : 3:15 Bike : 5 min T2 : 2:00 Run    {6 hrs total}

Swim: Wet Suit 68F; Lub up the neck.

T1: nothing (sun screen) (put on shirt, Number strap, and then shoes (? no socks), gloves on bike)

Bike : 4 gels + Water, 3 GE, 2 Shots (HR 130 to start and move to 140's) 30/60m:gel 90 shot 120/150m:gel 180:shot (1/4 GE (5 oz) every 10 minutes or one per hr)

T2: Gel and water (may change shirts) Sock and shoes for run, (I don't like the rocks in my shoes)

Run: 3 gels + water (1/30min)(may carry a bottle if not enough aid satations) , also what I want on aid stops (HR start 140-145 for 5 miles: 9 pace), move to 150-153 if ok (else stay at 140-145) for 5 miles and do what is right for last 5K....

Coach Advice for Bike: Your target HR for HIM is going to start in zone 1 and gradually move into high zone 2 through mile 40-45 and then into low zone 3 over the course of the last 10-15 miles...........if your training has prepared you for this and if your fitness is there. The reason I make the last comment is the knowlege of needing to run off 13.1 miles.

Your HR for this is specific to you. Based on the numbers below you will startbelow 131 and not want to be beyond 144-145.

Greg...

I volunteered at the White Lake HIM a few weekends ago and I was a body marker. I learned that it was best for people to body marked BEFORE putting on sun screen. The screen does not allow the marker to stay put. So...get body marked then apply the sun screen!!

Don't foget to take a hat or visor!!!

Good Luck this weekend!

Hey Everyone!! Haven't checked in for a while. Hope everyone's training is going well

I'm seeing a lot of my fellow BTer's starting to race. The only races i have lined up are a series of slightly shorter than sprint races (400 yd swim/12 mi bike/5k). Got a new road bike thanks to a BT post (Javelin) that i love. Been doing some group rides. Swimming is going well and running is going well. Knee is holding up.

All-in-all - think i'm ready give racing a shot.
Oh, with one exception - still need to get some equipment (tri-shorts especially).

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for all the support!!

Have a great race season!!

Had my second race of the year this morning at Bakersfield, CA. First step into the water - pulled a calf muscle - had a decent swim, really good bike but had to walk the 5K with a major limp. I wasn't going to accept a DNF. Now I'll rest the running muscles and keep to the pool and bike this week - TT in two weeks and an Olympic on June 15. Hope I am 100% for that one.
