I had a close call tonight.  As some of you may remember I had a season ending crash during training for IMLP 2009... and deferred to 2010.

Tonight I was doing a ride in my full IM kit - aero helmet, race wheels, bike-stripped to nothing, kit I will wear at the race.  It was my first ride on race wheels and low crr tires and latex tubes, and I have to tell you it was amazing (ride quality and speed were noticeably improved... especially the ride quality/comfort).  Didn't notice any problems with handling so was very happy.

Just over an hour into my ride, I was flying down a hill to make sure I could handle them fine at high speeds in a cross wind... gps shows a speed of ~40mph... and I snapped my chain hammering in the hardest gear I have!!!!  I have never snapped a chain before!

Thankfully it snapped and came off with a terrible noise (looks like it may have grabbed my front derailleur) but did not get tangled up in any moving parts.  If it had gone into my spokes I'm positive I'd be out a race wheel and having a vacation in the hospital instead of lake placid (for the second year in a row).

Scary... but I'm glad it happened today and not in the race... because I would not have been prepared to fix it in the race.  New chain goes on tomorrow and I'm leaving a couple links in my seat bag for the future.

Yikes.  But with a new chain at least I'll be 1-2 mph faster (bling = speed).

Holy cow, one week!!!

Hoping everyone gets all of their bike issues squared away!!

Me, I am just hoping my body can handle the run....pulled my psoas (do you know how freakin hard it is to strecth one of those??) and havent been able to run for two weeks :-(Well, I can, but its pretty amusing to watch!!)  I am bargaining with my body that if I am nice to it all week, hopefully it will return the favor!!

PennState - 2010-07-18 9:42 AM Completely crappy workouts and more aches and pains going on here.

Must be taper season

Heading up Tuesday myself, but won't get to LP until Wed. as we are stopping in Albany for the wife's 'J-Crew' trip.
Honestly I think the taper is the worst part of this process

glad to hear.

i'll be up there wednesday early afternoon.

golden arrow wednesday night, northwoods rest of the stay.......

Ok be honest. How many times today did you look at a clock and say to yourself, "this time next week I'll be just finishing the first loop, or getting off the bike, ect."

Monty, how did you read my mind? Definitely doing that. "This time next week I'll done with the swim!" Haven't yet reached the time of day when I'll be done with the bike though, unless I have an amazing day.

Thanks Josh!  I actually took an hour ride up route 2 early this morning and I have access to the Naval Academy pool.  Looks like I only have one other 1hr ride before I head up to LP, but if I need anything I'll definitely give you a call.  I'll definitely pick your brain about the area as the wife wants to take orders to the Academy and the last time I lived here I wasn't into tri's yet.

Good old Lejune Hall! Home of the 40 year swim and the Lejune Leap! Those were two requirements for grad. First you had to complete a 40 minute swim in full uniform. They took the lane lines out of the full Oly size pool and you swam in a rectangle. Number of laps determined your grade and if you passed and if you touched the sides - auto fail. Then you got out and everyone had to jump off the 10meter dive platform. Good times.

Did a sprint tri yesterday... for folks who live w/in drivable distance from Whitney Point, NY I think this is a good race for future IMLP racers.  The hills were a good prep for LP, that's for sure!  The swim was in a calm reservoir, which was nice when all 140 swimmers started with a mass start (okay, doesn't compare to 3,000 swimmers starting at the same time, but there definitely was a big of jostling and a good pull from the first swimmers in the water).  The run didn't mimic LP too much... we had to walk up a damn dam and that was it for hills.

Aside from determining where I'll be this time next week, I'm also composing a list of people I'll email my bib # too so they can keep tabs on me. =

Would love to sit with all of you and talk irl--you guys have been an amazing support team and I want to meet and thank you in person!

Can we all park at the horse grounds? I'm assuming so...but I don't mind carpooling from one point with other folks.  We could fit three others in our truck.  Anywho, I gave my cell # to Kelley, Rob, Dylan, Josh, Fred, Mike and Mirjam.  I'd be happy to give it to anyone else.

I have a BT tri suit that I'll wear on Saturday for a short swim/bike/run so I'll be easily picked out on that day!

Silly question... who bought IMLP clothing, etc last year at the expo? Anything really nice I should bring extra $$ for? Does it get discounted online after we all get home?

I got a IMLP polo shirt embroider $40-$50, and Sugoi RS Tri top Ironman LP $70 (These are the tri top I wear and will probable race this for Stacy thing I look hot in it).  I also got a K-Swiss polo shirt that was a transfer. $40 I think.  The transfer top didn’t last so I wouldn’t get one of those again.

After having riden the course many times over the years I think I might have
a clue where they "jack" up the hills from. As you may have heard - the hills
seem much bigger on the second loop than on the first. Thought is, the
hills are some how raised between loops. If I'm correct in the location I have
spotted I will do my best to disarm the equipment so the hills stay the same
size for each loop. If for some reason I can't  -then on first loop when you
find a good comfortable pace, click it back a gear or two to save yourself
for the second loop when the rotten stinkers raise the hills.

Quite morning!

I am planning to swim Mirror Lake 7am on Thursday and Friday.  So those early bird like myself shouldn’t mind.  Then again I am flexible.

I was thinking of meeting up on the back deck (Beach Side) of the Essex County Visitors Center.

Google map “Lake Placid Essex County Visitors Center” use satellite and zoom in.
