It's always smart to drive the bike course and bike the run course.

I always drive the bike course, but I never thought to bike the run course. You, sir, are a genius!

mrbbrad - 2010-07-20 11:30 AM Quick question about the bike course (I didn't scan through all 230+ pages of this thread):

How much climbing is lost with the new route this year? I plan to ride the course on Saturday as a look ahead for 2011 but I just read about the change in route due to construction.

I'm guessing the original route will be back for 2011 so I want to know what I'll miss. Is the bridge closed or just not race suitable? I supposed I could ride up to the bridge on both sides and see how far I get.

Hey MrB: The bridge is out on haselton road. This years route is a little easier, but the
normal route isn't bad. Expect one decent hill at end. You can ride out to where bridge
is out, but it's only two miles, but you go down the hill that you have to climb to finish
the out-back. There's some rollers on the other 4.5 miles of road but nothing to bad.
To see the "other" side of the bridge you would be going out of your way a little (but
not too bad) and you would join back up with haselton road about half-way down
from where the bridge is and normal turnaround is. I hope this helps. Enjoy your ride.

Thanks!!!

Yeah very rough taper here....crushed my last workouts but the short taper ones have all felt crummy and forced. Body is confused and nerves are starting to kick in....In retrospect taking off entire week before race may leave too much time to sit and think.

I have a feeling as rough as the swim start may be, I will feel better once we are underway.

Thanks to everyone who posted to this thread. I learned so much. Whatever happens with my day on Sunday I am starting the race healthy and as prepared as possible. I did everything my coach suggested, read everything I could get my hands on, and sucked up as much info as possible from this thread. Seriously, it was unbelievably helpful for a first-timer like me.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Brian

P.S. Some have talked about being emotional at the finish...and I will be. I think I will also be emotional right before the start when I look around and realize "I am really doing this!!"

Everyone have a great day!

Man I'm gonna have to post some Hoyt or Blazeman or Reinertsen youtube videos to get all you crybabies going.

I'm headed to LP to race, not get in touch with my inner self.

PS - it's been an incredibly emotional year for me personally (unrelated to tri training)... the wife that a year ago I didn't expect to be married to by this time will be there waiting for me with some friends I expected to lose in the divorce that didn't happen all wearing custom shirts in support of me... so no one better take a picture of me bawling my eyes out because then I won't be able to deny it!

Hey IMLPers, I'm just back from Italy. We extended the trip to 12 days and flew back tonight. I've been away from Internet and phone access for over a week so I just got my race number - 2554. I have one day to do laundry, pack and get up to LP. Wild. I'm sure I'll be a little jet lagged and I know I've gained a few pounds, but it was worth it. I biked 7 days and did some hiking too, so much fun. See everyone there!

Inflammation & Pain:

My wife is an emergency room physician with a top New England Hospital (and before this, Dartmouth Medical School and UMASS residency). Her advice to me for managing inflammation and pain during IMLP is below. As always, check with your doctor as your situation may differ.

Anti-inflammation. Take two (2) 200mg of Advil (Ibuprofen) a day during Thu-Sat, after a meal. On Sunday, take two (2) 200mg at 6am and then another two (2) 200mg at T2. (So, put one pack of two capsules in pre-race bag, and put a second pack of capsules in T2 bag.)

Pain relief. Take two (2) Extra Strength Tylenol (Acetaminophen), which relieves mild to moderate pain from headaches, muscle aches, colds, sore throats, toothaches, backaches, etc. Take Tylenol at T2, if needed. (So, put one pack of two capsules in T2 bag.)

Like PennState said earlier, I know there's a lot that's been said about whether this is a good or bad idea, but just to offer some more information, here's a New York Times article on whether taking ibuprofen during a race is such a hot idea to begin with, as it doesn't appear to change an athlete's perception of pain, and it also seems to slow the healing of tendons and muscles after the exercise:

http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/01/phys-ed-does-ibuprofen-help-or-hurt-during-exercise/

This sentence also sort of grabbed me:

The ibuprofen users also showed signs of mild kidney impairment and, both before and after the race, of low-level endotoxemia, a condition in which bacteria leak from the colon into the bloodstream.

Ick.

If you really want to take something, I'd skip the "Vitamin I"...Tylenol seems like the better idea here.

Anyway. No disrespect for anyone who wants to try this, but for me the risks do not seem worth it, especially if it doesn't really do a whole lot for you...

I've thoroughly researched the subject and NSAID's are a HUGE NO-NO during Endurance Activities (marathon, HIM's, IM) for many, many reasons including kidney failure and hyponatremia.  You can easily DIE from either condition.

Here is a Race Report from a week ago where a seasoned triathlete ended up in the Emergency Room after popping just a couple of ibuprofen pre-race:  http://sites.google.com/a/mpstraining.com/services/elaine-s-blog

This is so hard now watching you all trickle into Lake Placid, knowing I can't get up there til Friday.

I did a short brick today with some pick ups and on my run my legs didn't feel like they wanted to pick up.  This better go away soon - I haven't really had taperitis up til now.
one swim (40), one bike (40) and one run (30) to go and then the BIG DAY

Safe travels everyone as you head up to Lake Placid!

Enjoy the vibe and excitement as it builds to Sunday. You've done the training now you get to have the reward and do the race. It really is a magical place.

Even though I'm not racing, I've read this thread all year. You guys are awesome group of triathletes who have learned a lot from each other as well as supported each other. BT is a special place that brings together folks of all ages and abilities. I bet the BT gang up at Placid this year will have a blast and I know we'll see a lot of individual goals reached. First timer soak it up and it will be a special day.

Good luck everyone!

I know others not racing are reading this thread so if you'd like to help with the updating of the BTers progress throughout the day Sunday, check out this thread and volunteer.

Bike is looking fast Fred! We leave at 6am tomorrow and will probably arrive in town around 1 or so. Definately up for a swim Friday morning to try out the new sleeveless. Yes I pulled the trigger and bought it. I will be the extremely handsome man in the black wetsuit. Stay thirsty my friends.
