So it’s your fortieth birthday; four decades have passed .

They say when you get older time goes twice as fast.

I wouldn’t know, of course, since I am still quite young,

But for you, the music’s not over; your last song hasn’t been sung.

Turning 40 brought with it a new age group,

Men with hairy backs in tight spandex suits.

But you’ve stayed in the game, it isn’t time to fold

A podium finish you’ve still to hold.

Up way before dawn, bike on the rack,

Standing in potty lines with the rest of the pack.

The water’s too warm.  Damn, no wet suit again.

You’re passed by a kayak, you never could swim.

Finally to shore, there’s a leech on your toe.

“Just give me my bike and get me away from this water hell hole.”

Off on the road no one can stop you

Crap was that Whaley? Don’t worry; you’ll pass him at mile 2.

Bunny hopping speed bumps, powering up hills,

A focused determination and a power output to kill.

Certain parts are starting to hurt; your hands are going numb.

Back at the start, it’s now time to run.

Where are you legs? You’ve left them somewhere.

You look down to check and see if they’re still there.

Gus are giving you the wrong kind of gas.

Passed on the left.

Passed on the right.

Sprayed by a hose, you’ll finish by night.

Just passed by Paul; caught in the run

“Come back Paul, you said this was fun.”

Volunteers keep saying you look great.

Liars!!!  What will be your fate?

You can walk the course if need be,

Heck, you can’t beat Paul but for sure will beat Tracy.

Oops there’s the camera man, gotta look cool,

Even though you’ve involuntarily started to drool.

There’s seaweed on your face, blood on you knees

Sunburn on your shoulders and you look like you’ve gotta pee.

Two miles away, the finish line is near,

The purpose for the race is coming quite clear.

At the end, it seem everyone is your fan

You busted it, you’ve joined the elite clan.

With energy like that pink bunny

You make us look lazy, that’s not funny!

If you manage to forget

We’ll remind you don’t you fret.

I have known you for quite a while

When you talk you make me smile

A special friend, I will probably keep

If on my birthday I get some race wheels to keep!
