Tried Grace today - lots tougher than I thought. Time was 13:19, which I guess is forever in CF land. The problem wasn't strength - I breezed through the first 5 reps like they were nothing. It was anaerobic endurance. At least I know what my weakness is now, which is good. Grace and I will meet on another date for sure.

Finished up my cleans from yesterday, 3x3 power cleans @ 195lbs. After that I decided to check what my 1 rep max is for the clean since 195 was my previous PR, ended up hitting 215, and I think I might have even had a little more in the tank too. Very happy with my progress.

After that went to the park workout, oh man was this one tough!

15 burpees, 100m run, 1 pull-up (chest to bar as always), 100m run.
14 burpees, 100m run, 2 pull-ups, 100m run.
13 burpees, 100m run, 3 pull-ups, 100m run.
etc...
until 1 burpee, 100m run, 15 pull-ups, 100m run.

Doesn't sound so bad but it ends up being 120 burpee, 120 chest to bar pull-ups and 3000m of running, and it's all split up just enough so you never have to stop, it was tough!

Time was 29:12

Yesterday did the filthy fifty... brutal as always. finished in 32:22 though, which, though not amazing, is still pretty good for me. I seriously would be in the low twenty minute range if not for the D@mn Burpee's. Bane of my existence.

Today... Isabel.

What a total waste. I just can't get the hang of a Power Snatch. I can tell the problem is in my catch... I hit a full squat position, but my arms end up being in front of my ears, throwing my balance all off and making me miss an (otherwise) easy lift. Had no problem throwing the 135 up, and no problem hitting the depth of the squat... I just can't hit that sweet spot at the top. My Overhead Squats are also only so-so, I suppose that is part of the reason behind it. Anyways, I didn't time myself considering I could never catch more than 1 or 2 in succession, but probably ended up doing over a hundred. Hope everybody else did better.

Power snatches are done with only a partial squat. You were doing full squat snatches or the "classic snatch" as some call it. Sounds like you diagnosed this problem on your own. You're not stable in the squat position. Overhead squats and drop snatches will help you here. I have a similar problem. Nice job on the 135.

Was planning on a rest day this morning but it turns out the workout at my gym was Fran and I got talked into doing it anyway.

21-15-9
Thrusters
Pull-ups (chest to bar)

time 4:34

I was pretty sore so I went in with a mindset to go easy and ended up getting a PR (with the chest to bar mod) by 30 seconds, not too bad. I think if I would have really gone for it I could have shaved another 15 to 20 seconds off that also. Very happy with my recent progress.

Worked up to a heavy power snatch of 57 kg. I know, that's not all that heavy. Seeing as how I don't have bumper plates and I work out in my basement, I'm afraid to drop under into the squat. I know I could. Then did kettlebell snatches with the 32 kg KB, 30 total reps per side. That's sort of like Isabel, but it was a good workout.

Last night PM: 3xCFWU + "Isabel"

Messed around on form for a while with a 30lb straight bar, then went 20 reps at 80lbs, then 95lbs for the remaining 10 reps

5:37 for Isabel, another 12min for warmup and technique reps

This morning:

30, 25, 20, 15, 10, 5 reps Virtual Shoveling (check out the vid on CF site)/pushups 13:51 after 5 min jumprope

I guess they are prepping everyone for a rough winter!

Had two clients this morning so had to go in extra early to get my workout in before training. Unfortunately I didn't get my intended workout in because I got interrupted. Another guy at my gym had a friend of his come in to basically give a sales pitch for Bulgarian Sandbags. They were kind of cool and the guy was nice and all, but I was pretty pissed that I had woken up at 4:00 am to get down there early for my workout and then I couldn't get it in because of this. With my limited time I just did some clean and jerks, 5x3, don't remember all the weights but finished at 175lbs (I have a really good clean but my jerk is pretty mediocre).

How was the vitual shoveling?  Did you switch which leg was forward?  It looked like it would be one of those sneaky painful exercises.

Oh, hi guys.  I've been on quite a crossfit hiatus!

Wasn't bad at all, mild shoulder burn, but I did split the sets with 1/2 reps done on each leg...for you guys in MA it may help prevent future winter back injuries!

Did the Wod Today... gotta love the shoveling. I switched leg/hand forward on each set. Lower back was burnt out after this.

14:45 - had more in the tank for a lower time, but when the lower back feels that tender I prefer to back off.  I can't think of any time in my life I've had to shovel 45+ lbs of stuff. At least they didn't want us to throw it over our shoulder! Now there would be a workout. Got some of the strangest looks ever in the gym too, thats always fun.

I had an exam today so I was out of the fight. But I'm back in it tomorrow and I'm doing this WOD. It promises to be fun... or not...

I may try the shovelling just for the novelty of it. At first I thought it was a stupid lift, but then I recalled that Steve Justa had high praise for the lift in his book "Rock, Iron, Steel: The Book of Strength." That's one of my favorite books. Justa looks like he could be a lost Belushi brother who took up strength training instead of acting. I believe he's a blue collar guy with no college or anything, yet his writing style is great. He could have had a good editor, I suppose, but still. The book is more philosophy and personal memoirs as opposed to a "training" book. His house and yard are filled with barrels and assorted junk which he lifts and carries around. He's not so much about brute strength as he is about strength-endurance and functional strength gained from lifting awkward objects and heavy barrels filled with sloshing water that challenges your stability. He once hiked 2 miles wearing a 200 lb. weight vest. Steve Justa is my kind of guy.

400m run/max pullups

rd 1: 16

wasn't as much the strength that kept me from doing more pullups/round it was the fact that I was winded from the sprint...thinking of dialing back the sprints to max out more reps

I'm doing this tonight before swimming.  I ought to sleep well tonight.  This looks like another of those that seems easier than it will be.

The shovelling is weird. Very weird. My buddy and I completed it in 27:20. I had to dial back to 35 pounds rather than 45. I got into a groove though. Half the battle was holding the bar. It was like doing a combo of a deadlift / lunge.

You're right, Steve, it felt like a deadlift-lunge type movement. I liked it; didn't feel weird at all. I can feel it in my abs today, which doesn't surprise me.

My lower back didn't appreciate yesterday haha reminds me of my youth.

Anyways, todays Wod is one of those that just sneaks up on you. Me and Pukie almost had a reunion, which is rare nowadays, but oddly it always comes on the days you least expect.

Max sets in 20 minutes of:

400m sprint

Dead Hang Pull-Ups, max reps

8 sets completed, every sprint took 1:34 - 1:37 seconds (treadmill is weird, same speed but different times...) pull ups looked like 10, 9, 8, 8, 7, 6, 6, 8

I'm pretty excited about it really, not so much the pull ups, but the sprints were all close to my max 400m sprint speed, although the last ones my running form looked rough.

Today's WOD.  Felt great.  I didn't do a good job of hitting lap on my watch at the same time each round.  I used 9.2 mph for all rounds but the first where I used 9.0.  I can go faster next time.  This one is strange though.  The better you are at pullups the less rounds you can complete (not that I have that problem).

7 rounds + 1.01 of run

rx'd: AMRAP of 400 meter sprint then max pullups (I can't kip yet unfortunately).

10/10/10/6/10/10/8
1.28/1.37/1.43/1.47/1.38/1.38/1.42

Today was my first day of Crossfit.   Got to reading the site for the past couple of days and thought "Nicole" looked like a good easy one to start with.   After trying this I don't know if it's on the 'easy' scale of Crossfit, but it sure was tougher than it read.    I got 5 rounds in 15 minutes done.   At the 15 minute mark my wife and kids came home and wondered what I was doing.   Kinda hard to stop to explain, but then we had our 1 year old all happy to see Dad so I just couldn't keep running away and having her chase me down the street.    Looking forward to the next challenges!

I also started working on a set of rings for the pull up bar in the garage.  $5 in PVC invested at home depot and they should work great.   There is a great thread on the crossfit site explaining the procedure.   At this points beats spending $80+ on a set for what I need them for.    Now I just need to get a new mount put in so I can get them higher to the ceiling and start figuring out how to do a muscle up.

Definitely need to work in the long runs into the CFE/CF routine; I'm now money committed to a 1/2 on Nov 2nd, then the full bird, 26.2 on Dec 7th!
